The Breville The Flavour Maker BSC500 is a discontinued 5 L slow cooker built around a removable EasySear pan: brown ingredients on the stovetop, then move that pan into the cooker base for slow cooking. That one-pan workflow is its clearest advantage, but the model is only a sensible buy if you find a complete unit in good condition, can use the pan on your cooktop, and are comfortable caring for a non-stick surface.
What the Breville BSC500 is—and its current status
Breville Australia identifies the stainless-steel version as model BSC500BSS and labels it discontinued; CHOICE lists it as BSC500 and also marks it discontinued. Breville describes it as a “5L slow cooker with EasySear® pan.” Breville’s product listing and CHOICE’s product record establish the status, but current new-stock or second-hand availability and pricing have not been verified.
That means this is best treated as a review of the design and its documented features, not a recommendation based on current market price or a hands-on test. CHOICE’s expert rating and detailed results are member-only, so there is no public score here to use as a verdict or comparison.
What you get: capacity, dimensions and controls
Breville lists a nominal 5 L capacity. CHOICE independently records a claimed 5 L capacity, but neither figure is a measured usable-fill recommendation. Breville’s specifications for BSC500BSS are:

Breville describes a wrap-around element as providing even heat for up to 10 hours. That is the manufacturer’s description, not an independently verified cooking-performance result. The available public evidence does not establish exact temperature ranges or how Auto behaves during a cook; consult the BSC500 instruction booklet for operating and safety details.
How the EasySear pan changes the cooking workflow
The removable cast-aluminium EasySear pan is the defining feature. Breville describes it as stovetop- and oven-safe. The intended workflow is to brown or sear ingredients in the pan on a compatible stovetop, then place that same pan into the slow-cooker base to finish the recipe. This can avoid transferring browned ingredients to a separate slow-cooker crock, reducing the number of vessels involved.

Do not assume the pan works on induction: the official specifications reviewed do not establish induction compatibility. If you are considering a used BSC500, verify compatibility with your actual cooktop rather than inferring it from the pan’s metal construction. The design also does not remove the usual limitation of slow cooking: recipes that need substantial liquid reduction may require a separate finishing step.

Breville specifies that the glass lid is dishwasher-safe, while its product copy advises hand washing the EasySear pan to help maintain its non-stick coating. A reproduced manufacturer response on ProductReview says the booklet allows dishwasher washing, but also recommends hot, soapy water and mild detergent for the pan. The conservative approach is hand washing, with the original booklet as the authority for full care directions.

Owner comments on ProductReview’s BSC500 page include praise for ease of use and the searing insert, alongside reports of scratches or deterioration to the non-stick surface and one report of retained liquid. These are self-selected anecdotes, not controlled tests or evidence of defect rates. They are useful prompts when inspecting a second-hand unit: look closely at the pan coating and ask about its care and use.
What the public evidence can—and cannot—say about performance
CHOICE is an independent product-review source, but the BSC500’s expert rating and detailed test results are restricted to members in the accessible record. No public controlled-test score or comparative result is established here. As a result, claims that the BSC500 cooks faster, more evenly, or better than another slow cooker would go beyond the available evidence.

The product’s documented case is narrower but useful: a removable pan designed for searing and slow cooking, three listed control settings, a 5 L nominal capacity, and a supplied trivet. Whether those features outweigh non-stick care requirements depends on the buyer’s cooktop, recipes and the condition of the particular unit.
Should you buy a used Breville BSC500?
Consider one if the one-pan stovetop-to-slow-cooker workflow matters to you and you find a unit whose insert, lid and accessories are in acceptable condition. Because it is discontinued, treat each listing as an individual used-product purchase rather than assuming that replacement parts, warranty coverage or an equivalent new model are readily available.

- Confirm the model number, especially whether the listing identifies BSC500 or BSC500BSS.
- Inspect the EasySear pan for scratches, peeling or other coating damage.
- Check that the removable pan, glass lid and stainless-steel trivet are included.
- Confirm cooktop compatibility, seller return terms and the appliance’s operating condition.
- Ask Breville and the seller about warranty coverage; do not assume an original warranty transfers or remains in force on a used, discontinued unit.
Breville’s official listing states, “This model has been discontinued.” Check the product listing for its published specifications, but do not treat it as proof of current stock or pricing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Breville BSC500 pan dishwasher safe?
A reproduced manufacturer response says the booklet permits dishwasher washing, but Breville’s product copy recommends hand washing the non-stick pan to help preserve its coating. Follow the original BSC500 booklet for complete care instructions; hand washing is the conservative choice.
