The 2026 Subaru Outback looks more like an SUV than its predecessors: its seventh-generation redesign is taller and boxier, and Subaru now markets the U.S. model as an AWD midsize SUV. But “no longer a wagon” is a fair description of the styling shift, not a universally settled classification. The Outback keeps its name and crossover heritage.
Why the 2026 Outback looks less like a wagon
The redesigned Outback adopts a taller, squarer body profile than the familiar low-roof wagon-like shape. The change is substantial enough that Subaru’s U.S. site presents the 2026 model as an AWD midsize SUV, while the Associated Press describes the new design as taller and boxier than the previous profile. Those cues explain the “full SUV” description, but body-style labels are partly editorial; the redesign does not erase the model’s crossover roots.
Subaru Corporation’s April 18, 2025 announcement described the Outback’s history as “a crossover SUV integrating the attributes of both passenger cars and SUVs.” That framing fits the 2026 model: its proportions and marketing move further toward SUV territory, while its identity remains tied to a long-running crossover line.

The reveal announcement cautioned that its technical details were preliminary; the later model-year brochure is the basis for the production-oriented specifications below.

What the published dimensions and capability figures show
Subaru’s 2026 brochure lists the standard Outback at 191.7 inches long, 74 inches wide excluding mirrors, and 67.5 inches high, with a 108.1-inch wheelbase. Wilderness is listed at 68.3 inches high. The available source set does not provide a complete matching table for the prior generation, so these figures describe the new model rather than quantify a year-over-year increase.
- Ground clearance: 8.7 inches on standard trims and 9.5 inches on Wilderness.
- Cargo: Maximum volume is listed as 80.5 cubic feet with the rear seatbacks lowered.
- Roof rails: The December brochure lists 800 pounds static capacity and 220 pounds dynamic capacity.
Capability also depends on trim. Premium, Limited, and Touring are rated to tow 2,700 pounds; Limited XT, Touring XT, and Wilderness are rated to tow 3,500 pounds. The higher figure is not a blanket rating for every Outback.

How the six U.S. trims differ
Subaru lists six trims for the U.S. 2026 Outback. The brochure assigns the 180-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder to Premium, Limited, and Touring, and the 260-horsepower turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder to Limited XT, Touring XT, and Wilderness.

The published figures make the trim trade-off clear: the turbocharged models are the ones with the higher stated towing capacity, while Wilderness adds the most ground clearance. The brochure specifications alone do not establish how those differences translate into real-world acceleration, braking, fuel economy, or ride quality.

What this means if you are choosing an Outback
If you are drawn to the Outback for its traditional wagon-like appearance, inspect the 2026 body in person: the squared-off, taller design is a meaningful visual change. If your priority is the published capability, compare trims by engine, clearance, and towing rather than assuming every model shares the same rating. Subaru’s official 2026 Outback page and 2026 brochure provide the U.S.-market model and specification details.
These specifications do not establish a complete performance verdict. The source material here does not include instrumented road-test results, direct fuel-economy testing, or current transaction prices, so those questions require evidence beyond the published figures.
