At the U.S. prices reported in June 2026, the Steam Machine starts at $1,049 for the 512GB model without a controller. A published Mini-ITX parts estimate came to $1,242.84 before tax, shipping, tools, or assembly—but that estimate is not a like-for-like build, and it does not prove the Steam Machine is cheaper or faster. The fair conclusion is narrower: $1,049 is not obviously a bad deal for a compact, living-room-focused PC, but its value depends on how much you want Valve’s integrated design and how useful your Steam library is to you.
What the reported $1,049 price includes
PCWorld reported four U.S. configurations on June 22, 2026. These are dated reported prices, not confirmation of a live October 2026 listing or current availability.
| Configuration | Reported U.S. price |
|---|---|
| 512GB, no controller | $1,049 |
| 512GB, with Steam Controller | $1,128 |
| 2TB, no controller | $1,349 |
| 2TB, with Steam Controller | $1,428 |
In that report, moving from 512GB to 2TB added $300, while the controller bundle added $79. Check Valve’s current regional store listing and stock before buying; the figures above are U.S. prices reported in June 2026, not a current offer.

What kind of PC you are paying for
PCWorld described the base model as having a six-core semi-custom AMD Zen 4 CPU, RDNA 3 graphics with 8GB, 16GB of DDR5 memory, and a 512GB SSD. Those descriptions should not be read as a one-to-one list of retail desktop parts: Valve’s machine uses a custom design.

Valve announced the Steam Machine alongside the Steam Controller and Steam Frame on November 12, 2025, as additions to the Steam Deck family expected in 2026. In a July 6, 2026 interview with Tom’s Hardware, Valve engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais said the design reflected memory and storage costs from about two years earlier and that a PC with similar or greater performance would likely be at a similar price point. That is Valve’s explanation, not independent confirmation that the price is competitive.
Griffais also pointed to the compact form factor, quiet operation, CEC integration, and a dedicated Bluetooth antenna for controller support. Those features matter if the intended setup is beside a TV, but they are difficult to represent with a parts-only total. Valve engineer Yazan Aldehayyat described another part of the value equation: “I think the value of the Steam Machine is inherently tied to the value of your Steam library in a lot of ways.”

- RYZEN 7 H 255 CPU - The Ryzen 7 H 255 is a chip from the Hawk Point family and is an upgraded version of the older Ryzen 7 8745H and has 8 cores (16 threads thanks to SMT support) that run at up to 4.9 GHz, together with the powerful Radeon 780M iGPU. Unlike Zen 3, Zen 4 offers AVX512 support along with other improvements such as larger caches/registers/buffers across the board.
- GAMING PC - The Radeon 780M (12 CUs / 768 shaders, up to 2,600 MHz) can drive multiple displays simultaneously with a resolution of up to 8K. Hardware encoding and hardware decoding of the most common video codecs (AV1, AVC, HEVC) is also no problem; playing the latest games on FSR settings without issues.
- WHY CHOOSE DDR5 5600MHz DUAL CHANNEL (2×16GB): With a 5600MHz clock—a 17% frequency uplift over 4800MHz—this kit delivers massive bandwidth gains that elevate real-world performance. Gamers enjoy higher minimum FPS and less stutter in open-world and sim titles for a smoother competitive experience. Video editors and 3D creators benefit from faster 4K/8K timeline scrubbing, quicker renders in DaVinci Resolve and Premiere, and swifter asset loading. For AI/LLM workloads, the superior throughput reduces I/O bottlenecks, cuts token generation latency, and accelerates model fine-tuning by keeping processing cores fed with data—so you wait less and create more.

What a DIY parts estimate can—and cannot—tell you
SteamHardware.io, an independent hobby project that says it is not affiliated with Valve, published a U.S. Mini-ITX parts estimate checked June 23–24, 2026. Its total was $1,242.84 before tax, shipping, tools, and assembly. The estimate used a desktop Radeon RX 7600 as a pricing proxy, not as a claim that the card is equivalent to the Steam Machine’s graphics hardware.

|---|---|
| Ryzen 5 8400F | $149.99 |
| Radeon RX 7600 | $279.99 |
| Mini-ITX motherboard | $169.99 |
| 16GB DDR5 memory | $199 |
| 512GB NVMe SSD | $101.99 |
| Case | $169.99 |
| 750W SFX power supply | $149.99 |
| Low-profile CPU cooler | $21.90 |
| Estimated parts total | $1,242.84 before tax, shipping, tools, and assembly |
The item prices are dated retail proxies, not current quotes. The project explicitly says its build does not match the Steam Machine’s acoustics, size, custom motherboard, integrated power delivery, or thermal design. It is useful as an example of how quickly a compact-PC parts list can add up, but it is not an apples-to-apples recreation.

PCWorld also cited a PCPartPicker approximation totaling $1,072.72, using a Ryzen 5 7600X, Radeon RX 7600, and 512GB SSD. The report did not provide a complete build list, and the approximation does not account for matching Valve’s integrated design. Treat it as another illustrative comparison, not a definitive build cost.
When $1,049 makes sense
You want a compact PC for a TV setup
A DIY comparison should account for more than component prices if you want a small, quiet machine with living-room integration. A desktop build can be configured around those goals, but the cited estimate does not establish that it will match Valve’s size, noise, thermals, or controller setup for the same cost.

You already have a useful Steam library
If you own games you want to play on the machine, that library can make the platform more valuable to you than a system that starts with no relevant games. If you would need to buy most of your games again, or your preferred titles are elsewhere, the library advantage may be limited. Griffais put the value question plainly: “And so in terms of what appetite people have to buy a gaming PC at a certain price, everyone’s going to have a different opinion on whether it’s a good value or whether the product makes sense for them.”

The Steam Machine is presented as a PC in Valve’s hardware family, so buyers should weigh the appeal of the Steam ecosystem and PC flexibility against the simplicity and game-access model of a console. The available figures do not establish comparative total ownership costs, subscription costs, or performance in specific games.

- Use the same date and region. The cited parts estimate is U.S.-based and was checked in June 2026; prices and availability can change.
- Compare a complete system cost. Include the operating system, assembly, tools, shipping, and tax where applicable, rather than comparing a console-like system with a parts subtotal.
- Match the use case. Consider game performance at the settings you use, storage, noise, thermals, case size, and TV/controller integration. No independent benchmark testing is established by the cited comparisons.
- Account for what you already own. Existing games, controllers, displays, and other peripherals can change the effective cost for an individual buyer.
Verdict
The June 2026 U.S. figures make the $1,049 base price plausible, not proven to be a bargain. One published compact-PC estimate was higher before several costs were included, while another reported approximation was close to the Steam Machine’s price but incomplete. Neither settles the comparison. If you want Valve’s compact living-room design and will use your Steam library, the base model may be reasonable; if you mainly want the lowest-cost route to a particular level of gaming performance, wait for current pricing and comparable independent benchmarks rather than treating a parts list as proof.
