Yes—Teamwork can suit agencies that need to manage client projects, track billable time, and connect delivery work with budgets and staffing. Its agency appeal is that these functions sit in one service. The main caveat is plan fit: several advanced resource and profitability features are reserved for higher tiers. Teamwork’s product materials describe what it offers, but don’t establish that it will improve results for every agency; test it with your own client work before committing.

Where Teamwork fits agency work

Teamwork is positioned for client work, with project and task management, client access, time logging, and billing workflows. An agency can create projects from scratch or from templates, organize work into task lists, record time manually or with a timer, mark time as billable, set rates, create invoices, and export invoices to accounting software. These are documented workflows, not a guarantee that every agency’s billing process will fit without adjustment. Teamwork’s agency quick-start guide describes the setup.

The vendor also promotes client portals, retainer management, billable and non-billable time linked to budgets, workload planning, creative approvals through Proofs, and project- and client-level profitability reporting. Check those capabilities against your actual approval, billing, and reporting requirements in a trial or demo. Teamwork’s agency page outlines its positioning.

Can clients participate without becoming full team members?

Teamwork distinguishes client users from standard users and collaborators. Its quick-start guide says client users do not incur extra subscription cost and can be added to up to five projects belonging to their company. Because access limits and permissions can change, confirm the current terms and test what a client can see and do before designing your process around that allowance.

Which plan includes the agency controls you need?

The current comparison page, last modified September 29, 2026, lists Free Forever, Basics, Accelerate, Optimize, and Enterprise. Feature availability varies by tier, so a low entry price does not establish that the plan includes the financial and staffing controls an agency may be evaluating. How useful are Teamwork’s time and profitability views?

The financial views are only as reliable as the inputs. Teamwork’s client overview calculates cost by multiplying cost rates by logged time, and billable totals by multiplying billable rates by logged time. Total profit is billable total minus total cost. If staff omit hours, use inconsistent rates, or classify work incorrectly, those calculations may not reflect the client’s true margin. Teamwork’s client overview documentation describes the metrics.

What agency problems does this address—and what remains unproven?

A 2023 report by Teamwork.com and Audience Audit surveyed 512 agency leaders, most in the United States, with additional respondents from the UK, Canada, Australia, Ireland, and other countries. It reported a margin of error of ±4.9 percentage points at a 95% confidence level. In that survey, 33% said their agency struggled to keep projects on time and budget, 38% said agencies overserved clients, and 82% of agencies using project-management software used its built-in time tracking. These are dated, self-reported findings published by Teamwork.com with Audience Audit—not current universal rates or evidence that Teamwork solves those problems. Read the 2023 agency report.

Teamwork’s case study on Agency 2.0 quotes Senior Account Manager Haley Sedam calling the service “intuitive and easy to use internally and for our clients” and an “irreplaceable resource.” That is one customer’s opinion in a vendor-published case study, not independent comparative testing. The example cannot establish that another agency will achieve the same adoption or business results. Read the Agency 2.0 case study.

How to decide whether it fits your agency

Evaluate the whole workflow and the total price of the tier it requires—not just the project board or starting price. A short trial using real agency work can reveal whether staff and clients will use the system and whether its reports answer practical questions.

  1. Map your client work. List the number of active clients, recurring projects, retainer or fixed-fee commitments, approval steps, and the client access each project needs.
  2. Identify essential controls. Decide whether you need basic task tracking and billable time, or also workload planning, resource scheduling, financial budgets, utilization targets, and profitability reporting.
  3. Confirm tier and price. Match each required feature to the live plan comparison and calculate the subscription cost for the necessary users, billing period, and region.
  4. Run a representative project. Invite a staff member and a client, use a real template, record billable and non-billable time, and check whether permissions, reminders, and approvals work as intended.
  5. Validate the numbers and handoff. Enter the rates and budget assumptions you actually use, then review the resulting client and project views. Test invoice export and accounting handoff rather than assuming they match your process.
  6. Check adoption and alternatives. Ask whether the team will log time consistently and whether clients will use the access you provide. When comparing another project tool, assess client permissions, billing, financial controls, resourcing, delivery features, integrations, onboarding effort, and the tier cost on the same workflow.

Teamwork’s direct comparisons with other products are vendor-authored positioning, not independent evaluations. The available evidence establishes product claims and documented features more clearly than independent usability results or return on investment.
