Both Sync.com and MEGA market cloud storage built around private encryption, but the available evidence does not establish an independent security winner. Sync’s current terms clearly explain an important trade-off: its optional email-based password recovery escrows an encrypted copy of your private key, so an account using it is not strictly zero-knowledge. MEGA’s app listing says the service cannot access or reset your password, but the current primary documentation needed to compare its recovery rules and encryption exceptions is not established here.
What the security comparison can—and cannot—show
A fair comparison needs more than a claim that a service is “zero-knowledge.” It should establish what is encrypted, which account actions or features create exceptions, how lost-password recovery works, and what controls protect account access and shared files.
Sync’s current terms and privacy policy provide specific details about its encryption defaults, recovery-key escrow, and data handling. The available MEGA sources support its stated end-to-end encryption positioning, but do not settle the same technical and recovery questions. That evidence gap is not proof that MEGA is less secure; it means a definitive technical ranking is not justified.

Core storage and feature exceptions
Sync’s terms describe its core storage service as end-to-end encrypted by default. They also warn that certain account settings, Privacy Center features, use of selected features, or support activity may affect encryption. Treat the default as a starting point, not as a guarantee that every action or feature has identical protection. See Sync’s terms for the service’s current conditions.

Email-based password recovery
Sync says its email-based password-reset option stores an encrypted copy of the private key in escrow. Sync explicitly states that enabling this feature means the account is not configured on a strictly zero-knowledge basis. Turning it off deletes the escrowed key; Sync says it then cannot recover the account if the password is lost. Some plans may require the recovery option or restrict disabling it, so check the setting and your plan’s terms before relying on a particular recovery arrangement.
This is a real trade-off rather than a simple security flaw: recovery may help someone regain access after forgetting a password, while strict control over the key means accepting that the provider cannot restore the account for you. Decide which risk matters more for your use.

Account data and plan-level protections
Sync’s privacy policy, whose latest version is dated September 15, 2026, says the company generally does not access or process stored file data except for stated exceptions. It also describes collecting account and contact information—including email, billing address, IP address, and device identifiers—for account administration, payments, support, and services. Private file contents therefore do not mean that no account metadata is collected. Read the Sync privacy policy for its stated scope and exceptions.
Recommended Free Tools
Sync’s help center says free and paid accounts receive the same underlying end-to-end encryption, zero-knowledge privacy, two-factor authentication, and file-version-history protections. It also lists a five-device limit. HIPAA compliance and a signed business associate agreement require specified paid plans; those compliance features are separate from the baseline security protections. Details are in the Sync Free plan limitations.

MEGA: what the available evidence supports
MEGA’s Google Play app listing says its end-to-end encryption means the company cannot access or reset a user’s password. That is a vendor statement in an app listing, not a substitute for current technical documentation or an independent security assessment. A third-party comparison describes MEGA as offering private encryption across the account, along with file sharing and synchronization, but does not establish the full current encryption scope or its exceptions.
The current primary-source details needed to compare MEGA’s recovery options, key handling, metadata, and feature-specific exceptions are not established by these sources. In particular, do not assume that MEGA’s password statement answers every question about account recovery or proves that every data type and workflow has identical protection. The relevant available sources are the MEGA app listing and a third-party Sync.com and MEGA comparison.

How the two services compare on decision points
| Decision point | Sync.com | MEGA |
|---|---|---|
| Encryption claims | Terms describe core storage as end-to-end encrypted by default and flag settings, features, and support activity that may affect encryption. Sync terms | The app listing describes end-to-end encryption and says MEGA cannot access or reset the password; full current scope and exceptions are not established here. MEGA app listing |
| Lost-password recovery | Email-based reset escrows an encrypted private-key copy; Sync says accounts with this option enabled are not strictly zero-knowledge. Disabling it deletes the escrow key, and Sync says it cannot then recover the account. Some plans may require or restrict disabling the option. Sync terms | The available current primary-source evidence does not establish the recovery process or its key-handling implications. |
| Free versus paid baseline protections | Sync says free and paid accounts have the same underlying encryption, zero-knowledge, two-factor authentication, and file-history protections. Choose based on your recovery needs and workflow
If keeping provider recovery away from your key is the priority
Review Sync’s account settings and plan terms to confirm whether email-based recovery is enabled and whether you can disable it. If you turn it off, store the password and any recovery information you need in a secure way: Sync says it cannot recover the account after the escrowed key is deleted. For MEGA, get current official recovery documentation before making the same judgment; the cited app listing does not settle that question.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf you want the clearest documented trade-off
Sync’s terms make the recovery-versus-strict-zero-knowledge choice explicit. That clarity can help you decide whether recoverability or provider-independent key control matters more, but it is not evidence that Sync is categorically more secure than MEGA.

If features and capacity matter as much as security
Compare the current official plan pages for storage allowance, pricing, device limits, version history, integrations, collaboration, and media features before subscribing. A third-party comparison can help identify workflow differences, but its dated plan and price figures are not a reliable 2026 price reference. The comparison’s speed results reflect that publisher’s particular test setup and should not be treated as universal performance measurements.
Quick Recap
Protect either account with sound account practices
- Enable two-factor authentication and use a unique, strong password.
- Review active devices and sharing permissions, particularly for links to sensitive files.
- Understand what account recovery can and cannot restore before you depend on it.
- Keep a separate backup of irreplaceable files; cloud sync and file-version history are not the same as an independent backup.
