A free player can earn Green Orbs through play, summon monsters, build and upgrade a focused team, replay maps for resources, and buy permanent upgrades with Purple Gems. What “pay to win” means in Summoners Greed
Summoners Greed is an idle tower-defense and monster-collection game rather than a title with a documented competitive PvP ladder in the sources available for this guide. That changes the question. Instead of asking whether a paying player automatically defeats a free player, ask four practical questions:
- Can a non-paying player enter the main maps and use the normal summon and upgrade systems?

The official listing calls the game free with in-app purchases
The U.S. Apple App Store listing identifies Summoners Greed as free and lists in-app purchases. That label means you can install and start the game without paying; it does not mean the shop has no accelerators, optional currency, or ad-related conveniences. The listing and its update history are the best references for the store-facing status of the iOS version: App Store listing and update notes.

Balance and economy changes make old advice unreliable
The same update history includes developer notes about Mythical costs and power and about map-difficulty changes. A team or farming route that was efficient in an older build may therefore take more or fewer attempts now. Treat guides as dated recommendations, not permanent rules, and check the update notes when your results differ from an older walkthrough.
Community evidence supports acceleration, not a payment requirement
An historical developer-community post discussed earlier packs that could provide enough currency to unlock Mythical monsters unusually early. The page does not independently verify the author’s official role, and the post referred to a planned rebalancing rather than proving that every proposed change shipped. It is useful evidence that purchases can accelerate access to rare content, not proof that buying is mandatory: historical rebalancing discussion.
How far can a free player progress?
A free account can use the central loop: earn resources from play, summon monsters, strengthen a small group, replay content when a wave blocks you, and return to easier resource maps. A 2025 community beginner guide presents that route explicitly and warns that its recommendations may need revision as the game changes: Updated Beginners Guide.
That supports access to ordinary map progression and meaningful team development without a purchase. It does not establish a universal number of days to the final map, a guaranteed free route to every Mythical, or equal speed between free and paying accounts. Current drop rates, offer inventories, and a complete late-game completion timetable are not established by the sources used here.
A no-purchase progression route
1. Start with Green Orbs earned through play
Use Green Orbs for ordinary monster summons instead of assuming that a shop purchase is the only way to expand your roster. The beginner guide’s loop is straightforward: play the available map, collect the rewards, summon when you have enough Green Orbs, and put the resulting monsters to work. Early variety is less valuable than a team that can actually clear the next wave, so do not spread every coin across the entire collection.

2. Concentrate coins on a primary damage dealer
Choose one main damage dealer and make that unit the first destination for early coins. The guide pairs that carry with support units commonly referred to as Mighty and Speedy. In that community recommendation, Mighty increases the attack of adjacent monsters, while Speedy improves adjacent attack and ability speed. Placement and exact values can change with balance patches; use the guide as a starting formation, then confirm what your current tooltips say.
3. Upgrade instead of treating a failed wave as a purchase prompt
When a wave stops you, replay the map or an earlier stage, collect more currency, and upgrade the concentrated team. This is the key free-to-play alternative to buying an immediate boost. Repeating a stage is not wasted effort if it produces the coins or summon currency needed to cross the next damage threshold. Avoid replacing the whole roster after one failure; first test whether a level increase, a support position, or a stronger primary attacker solves the problem.

The community guide recommends reserving Purple Gems for permanent Double Monster Damage and Double Coins upgrades rather than using them on Purple Gem summons. Its author prefers Double Coins first, because a stronger economy can fund more upgrades over subsequent runs. This is a player strategy, not an official statement that it is mathematically optimal in every version. Save enough gems to buy the permanent improvement you have chosen instead of making repeated impulse summons.
5. Return to resource-focused maps when your main route stalls
The guide identifies Joint Revenge as a resource-farming map and notes that later maps or challenges can provide additional rewards. Use those stages to rebuild coins, orbs, and upgrade capacity when the next progression map is above your current damage. Do not rely on a fixed yield or a claim that Joint Revenge is always the best farm: exact efficiency depends on balance, your clear speed, and the current version, and no current yield table is established here.
6. Recheck the route after updates
When an update changes Mythical costs, monster power, or map difficulty, re-evaluate your carry, support placement, and farming choice. A free route remains possible in principle, but the number of repetitions required can move with the economy. Record the version or update date beside any guide you follow so you can distinguish a balance change from a mistake in your own setup.

Do not infer a current summon probability from an old wiki table or search snippet; the sources here do not verify present-day odds.
Purple Gems
Purple Gems are scarcer strategic currency in the community route. The recommended choice is to save for permanent Double Monster Damage or Double Coins improvements before spending them on gem summons. If your version presents different costs or names, follow the current in-game description and treat the older guide as historical context.

Coins
Coins fund the immediate power increases that let a focused team pass a wave. A concentrated spending plan gives a free player a measurable next step: improve the main damage dealer, keep the adjacent supports useful, and only then broaden the roster. The exact upgrade curve is version-dependent, so no fixed coin total should be treated as universal.
Monster evolution and rarity
Community pages describe monster evolution and rarity systems, but they are not an official, current price or probability reference. Use them to understand terminology, then confirm requirements in your own client. The presence of a Mythical tier does not by itself demonstrate a paywall; the historical discussion only shows that purchases could bring some players to that tier earlier.

Spreading upgrades too widely
If coins are divided among many low-level attackers, none may reach the damage needed for the next wave. Re-center spending on one carry and the supports that directly improve it before adding marginal units.
Farming the wrong difficulty
Repeatedly losing on a late map can produce fewer useful rewards than clearing an earlier resource stage quickly. Switch to a stage you can complete consistently, then return after upgrades. The best named farm can change with patches, so judge by your current clear speed rather than an old ranking.

Spending Purple Gems without a plan
Gem summons provide excitement but can delay permanent damage or coin improvements. Decide which permanent upgrade is next and protect that reserve; only deviate when the current version clearly changes the value of the options.

Following obsolete balance advice
Old recommendations may assume different Mythical costs, unit power, or map difficulty. Compare the publication date with the update notes on the official listing before concluding that free play has become impossible.
How to decide whether buying is worthwhile
- Identify the problem. Is your blocker damage, coins, summon variety, or ad time? A purchase cannot fix poor placement or an upgrade plan.
- Try the free loop first. Replay a reliable stage, improve the carry and supports, and test the map again.
- Measure convenience, not a promised finish date. The available sources do not provide a trustworthy number of hours or days saved by a purchase.
