Wait if you want a game you can play now. Squadron 42 is still in development, is not currently downloadable, has no confirmed current retail price or independent review consensus, and is listed by Steam for a planned Q2 2027 release. Reconsider it after launch only if you want a single-player space campaign, your PC meets the final requirements, and reviews confirm that the finished game delivers reliable performance and worthwhile missions.
Squadron 42 is not playable yet
As of the official information available on October 13, 2026, Squadron 42 is an unreleased PC game. Roberts Space Industries (RSI) says development and testing must be completed before qualifying accounts can download it. The Steam listing also states that the game is not yet available.
Steam currently shows Q2 2027 as the planned release window. That is a target quarter, not a guaranteed launch date. It does not identify a specific day, and the listing can change before release. If your purchase decision depends on playing within a particular month, treat the game as having no firm date.

What Squadron 42 is supposed to be
The official Steam description calls it a cinematic, single-player space adventure in which you enlist in the United Empire of Earth Navy as a rookie. Its advertised scope combines several types of play:
- Combat and flight in spacecraft.
- First-person combat outside your ship.
- Exploration aboard ships, stations and outposts.
- Life and interaction with a ship crew.
- A directed campaign rather than a persistent multiplayer universe.
Those are publisher-described features, not independently verified results from a released build. The available information does not establish the campaign’s final length, mission variety, difficulty balance, artificial intelligence quality, loading behavior, or performance on specific graphics cards.
Steam lists the product as single-player and includes Steam Achievements, Steam Cloud, HDR and Family Sharing. A third-party RSI account is required and can be linked to Steam. The maturity notice mentions strong language, intense violence, blood and gore, so it is not aimed at every age group or every preference for tone.

Squadron 42 is the planned single-player campaign. Star Citizen is the persistent online universe. They share a setting, but they are not interchangeable purchases.
RSI’s 2016 package-split announcement described them as separately purchasable modules. That historical policy also said the games shared a universe and client at the time, and that campaign performance could affect a player’s persistent-universe career. Those details belong to the 2016 package policy and should not be treated as a complete description of every current edition or feature.

Do not assume that buying a Star Citizen package automatically adds Squadron 42. RSI’s current checklist notes a specific exception for a Squadron 42 standalone pledge, while package contents can change. Older backers may retain entitlements that are no longer sold to new customers.
How to check whether an existing pledge includes Squadron 42
If you backed a project years ago or bought an older package, check the entitlement rather than relying on the package name or a forum post.
- Sign in to the RSI account associated with the pledge.
- Open the account’s Hangar or pledge-inventory area.
- Open each relevant pledge and read its itemized contents.
- Look specifically for a Squadron 42 entitlement, not merely a ship, starter item or Star Citizen access.
- Keep a record of the account email and pledge details you verified; the Steam listing requires an RSI account that can be linked to Steam.
RSI’s support rule is prospective: when development, testing and release are complete, an RSI account that owns a qualifying pledge can download and play. That rule confirms how future access is intended to work; it does not mean the game can be downloaded now.
Release timing: what Q2 2027 does and does not mean
The official Steam listing is the strongest current public reference and says “Planned Release Date: Q2 2027.” A planned quarter leaves room for movement within the quarter or a later delay. It is not the same as a locked launch date, a pre-load date or a guarantee that every edition will unlock simultaneously.
PC Gamer reported that Chris Roberts had previously discussed Q4 2026 around the Intergalactic Aerospace Expo period, and that the studio selected Q2 2027 partly in light of the expected media attention around Grand Theft Auto VI. That report provides context for the schedule change, but it does not make Q2 2027 certain. Recheck the official Steam and RSI listings before spending money or upgrading a computer.

PC requirements currently shown on Steam
Steam’s displayed minimum specification is the only concrete hardware baseline in the available listing. Because the game is unreleased, these values may change before launch. The page text consulted did not expose a complete recommended specification.

Do not buy a graphics card solely because it has 8 GB of VRAM. The minimum line does not provide a model-specific benchmark, target resolution, frame-rate target, ray-tracing setting or expected quality preset. It also does not establish whether the game will run acceptably on a system that technically satisfies every minimum item.
Before upgrading, check the final store page and the developer’s launch documentation. Requirements for an unreleased game can change as optimization, visual features and build packaging progress.
Price and value are still unresolved
No current playable retail price is established by the official Steam listing or the RSI support material reviewed. Steam currently shows the game as unavailable, so there is no confirmed launch price to compare with other single-player releases.
RSI’s 2016 package announcement listed a historical $45 base price and a $15 add-on price. Those figures were explicitly tied to that earlier package policy and were subject to change. They are not a current offer. PC Gamer has also described the former $45/£43 standalone pledge as no longer being in the store. Do not use either historical figure as a budget for a 2027 purchase.

The following parts of value cannot be judged responsibly until a release build exists:
- How many hours the campaign contains.
- Whether missions remain varied after the opening chapters.
- How much of the experience is story-directed versus free exploration.
- Whether ship and on-foot controls feel equally developed.
- Launch stability, loading times and frame-rate consistency.
- Whether the final price is reasonable for the amount and quality of content.
Steam currently shows no user reviews for the unreleased game. There is therefore no verified review score or independent performance consensus to use as a value signal.
Who should wait, and who should keep watching

The most defensible positive case is conditional: revisit Squadron 42 after launch if the campaign style appeals to you, the final price fits your budget, your system meets the final requirements, and independent reviews confirm acceptable quality and performance. That is a purchase test, not a prediction that the unreleased game will pass it.
What to verify when the game becomes available
Use this sequence on or after the actual release rather than purchasing from an old announcement or a third-party claim.
- Confirm the release state. The official Steam page should change from unavailable to a purchasable or playable state, and RSI should document download access for qualifying accounts.
- Check the final edition and entitlement. Read exactly what the product includes. Do not assume a Star Citizen package contains the campaign.
- Record the regional price. Prices, taxes, currency conversion and availability can differ by storefront and location.
- Read the final system requirements. Compare the operating system, CPU, GPU, VRAM, RAM, storage and internet requirements with your own hardware.
- Review independent testing. Look for reports covering frame-rate consistency, shader stutter, crashes, loading, controller and mouse support, accessibility and mission variety.
- Check account linking. Confirm that the Steam account is connected to the correct RSI account before redeeming or launching.
- Read the store policy. Understand the applicable refund window and any account or activation restrictions before downloading a large installation.
Common purchase mistakes
Buying Star Citizen access and assuming the campaign is included
Package names and ship contents can obscure the distinction between the online universe and the single-player campaign. Open the itemized pledge contents and verify the Squadron 42 entitlement explicitly.

Treating a historical price as a current deal
The $45 and $15 figures come from a 2016 RSI announcement. They do not establish what a new buyer will pay when the game launches.
Upgrading from the minimum specification alone
The listed 8 GB of VRAM and 16 GB of RAM are minimum entries, not performance recommendations. Without final benchmarks, a hardware purchase based only on those numbers carries unnecessary risk.
Confusing promotional features with tested results
Descriptions of cinematic presentation, crew life, exploration and combined ship/on-foot play explain the intended design. They do not prove campaign quality, mission length or technical stability.

Assuming a planned quarter cannot move
Q2 2027 is the current Steam target. Keep the date in your plans as provisional until the developer announces a firm launch and the store page becomes available.
What a useful launch review should answer
When reviews arrive, prioritize evidence that answers your own purchase risks rather than a single score. A useful evaluation should explain:
- How long the main campaign takes and whether optional activities add meaningful variety.
- Whether ship combat, first-person combat and exploration are balanced or whether one dominates.
- How often missions reuse locations, objectives or encounter patterns.
- Performance at common resolutions and settings, including frame-time consistency rather than only average frames per second.
- Crash frequency, save reliability, patch cadence and the severity of launch bugs.
- How the RSI account link, Steam Cloud and offline or online checks affect ordinary single-player use.
- Whether accessibility options, input customization and HDR support work as advertised.
- How the final regional price compares with the amount of finished content.
Until those questions have credible answers, a purchase is primarily a bet on the concept and the developer’s future delivery rather than an informed assessment of a finished product.
Bottom line for a prospective buyer
Squadron 42 is not a normal buy-and-play recommendation in October 2026. It is an unreleased, planned single-player campaign with a current Steam target of Q2 2027, no established current price, no user-review record and hardware requirements that may change. Wait if you need immediate access, certainty or proven performance. If the concept interests you, monitor the official listing, verify any existing RSI pledge, and make the purchase decision only after release information and independent testing answer the remaining questions.
