Short answer: wait before paying for Squadron 42 unless your RSI account already contains a pledge that explicitly includes it. As of October 13, 2026, the single-player game is still in development and is not available to download. The latest announced target is Q2 2027, but that is a release window rather than a guaranteed date. RSI has not confirmed a current price, final retail editions, or a definitive list of launch extras in the information available for this guide.
Existing backers should check My Hangar first. A pledge that contains Squadron 42 may give you access later without another purchase, while a Star Citizen package does not automatically prove that the single-player campaign is included.
Can you play Squadron 42 now?
No. RSI support stated in an update dated February 4, 2026: “Squadron 42 is currently in development and is not available for download.” Accounts that own a pledge containing the game are expected to receive download access only after development is complete, testing has finished, and the game has released.

What the status means for a buyer
- No playable build: there is no released campaign to download or test through a retail account.
- No final launch terms: current information does not establish the final price, editions, platform-access rules, or physical and digital extras.
- Access is conditional: a qualifying pledge is expected to become downloadable after release, not before.
- Refund and change questions remain important: because the product and its storefront terms are not final, read the live RSI pledge and refund language before committing money.
Do not confuse development updates, trailers, or a package entry in your account with present-day play access. The only practical test is whether RSI has officially released the game and enabled the download for eligible accounts.
When is Squadron 42 coming out?
The latest researched target is Q2 2027. In August 2026, RSI chairman Chris Roberts said the team reviewed release windows at the start of 2027 and chose the second quarter as a better time. PC Gamer reported the statement and noted that a specific date would be announced later.
Q2 covers April through June 2027. It is therefore more useful than the superseded 2026 target, but it is not a promise that the game will launch in a particular month or that every promised feature will be available on that date. Development, testing, certification, and release preparation can change a target window.

How to plan around the target
- Treat Q2 2027 as the current planning window, not a booked appointment.
- Do not buy solely because a listing repeats an older 2026 date.
- Look for a dated RSI announcement confirming the exact launch day before making hardware, vacation, or gifting plans.
- After an announcement, verify that the pledge store and your account describe the same access terms.
The February 2026 support article predates the Q2 2027 announcement. The later release-window report did not say the game had become downloadable, so the two facts are consistent: the game remains unreleased while a future target is discussed.
What are you actually buying?
Squadron 42 uses an RSI account and pledge model rather than a conventional boxed purchase. Your entitlement is attached to a specific item in your account, and the contents of that item determine what you should receive when the game launches.
RSI’s current FAQ explains that account holders can expand an item in My Hangar to view the contents of an individual pledge. The FAQ gives examples such as a digital copy of Star Citizen, a ship, insurance, UEC, and a manual for game packages. Those examples describe pledge mechanics generally; they do not define a future Squadron 42 edition.
Why the exact pledge matters
Long-running packages have changed over time. Two accounts can display similarly named items while carrying different entitlements, and an older package may include both games even when a newer package does not. The name of a ship, insurance term, or Star Citizen package is not enough evidence that it contains the single-player campaign.

- IMPERIAL COMMAND: Elevate your squadron with the Galactic Empire Maneuver Dial Upgrade Kit.
- IMPERIAL PRIDE: These plastic maneuver dials proudly display your allegiance to the Empire while enhancing your squadron's aesthetic.
- SECURE DESIGN: Each kit securely houses a ship's dial within a durable plastic housing for seamless gameplay.
- EASY IDENTIFICATION: Included dial ID tokens simplify ship differentiation during intense battles.
- COMMAND WITH STYLE: Declare your Imperial distinction and customize your squadron like a true commander.
Only an entitlement that explicitly identifies Squadron 42 should be treated as proof of ownership. If the description is unclear, save a copy of the item details and ask RSI support before buying another pledge.
How to check whether you already own Squadron 42
Checking first is the safest way to avoid paying twice. Use a desktop browser if the account page is difficult to read on a phone.
- Sign in to the RSI account you used for previous pledges.
- Open My Hangar from the account menu.
- Review every relevant pledge, not only the newest ship or package.
- Expand an item to display its detailed contents.
- Look for an explicit Squadron 42 entitlement or wording that identifies the single-player game.
- Record the pledge name, date, and listed contents before changing or melting anything.
- If no item names Squadron 42, do not infer ownership from a Star Citizen-only description. Contact RSI support if you believe a historical package should include it.
My Hangar is more reliable than a remembered purchase description, a forum post, or a third-party listing. Keep in mind that account pages and pledge policies can change; recheck the live item details immediately before a new purchase.
Does a Star Citizen package include Squadron 42?
Not automatically. The two products have been sold together and separately, so the package title and the presence of a ship do not settle the question.
RSI’s February 2016 package-split notice said that existing backers retained both Star Citizen’s persistent universe and Squadron 42. It also said that packages bought after February 14, 2016 could select one module separately or add the other, and that both modules used the same client at that time. This is historical context, not a guarantee that today’s packages follow the same rules.
Use this rule when reading a listing
- “Star Citizen” alone: not proof that Squadron 42 is included.
- “Squadron 42” named in the contents: evidence that the pledge is intended to include the campaign, subject to the account’s actual entitlement.
- Older “Star Citizen + Squadron 42” or combo wording: verify the expanded My Hangar contents, because legacy packages can have special terms.
- A ship, insurance, UEC, or manual: these are pledge components and do not independently establish campaign ownership.
When a new listing appears, read the complete contents panel rather than relying on a headline, search snippet, or seller’s shorthand.
Which editions are available?
No confirmed current edition lineup is established in the available official information. There is no verified standard-versus-collector comparison, confirmed physical edition, or published list of digital extras to use for a present-day buying decision.

| Standalone Squadron 42 offer | Historical package-split materials allowed the modules to be selected separately. | Current standalone price and live storefront availability are not stated by current official information. |
| Star Citizen bundle | Some historical packages included both products. | Which current packages include Squadron 42 is not stated; check each pledge’s contents. |
| Standard edition | No current standard-edition specification is confirmed. | Price, launch bonuses, platform terms, and included items are not stated. |
| Collector or premium edition | No confirmed current collector lineup is available. | Physical goods, art books, soundtrack, statues, and other extras are not stated. |
| Digital extras | RSI’s general FAQ lists examples of pledge assets for game packages. | Those examples do not establish Squadron 42 launch-edition extras. |
Until RSI publishes a live product page with those fields, any detailed edition comparison is speculation. Be especially cautious of old screenshots or reseller pages that present a historical package as a current offer.
What did Squadron 42 cost historically?
RSI’s February 2016 package-split notice listed $45 for either component and a $15 add-on for the other component at that time. The notice explicitly said the figures could change. They are historical package-split prices, not a current quote.
Do not use $45 or $15 to judge whether a 2026 or 2027 offer is cheap, expensive, or still available. A current price must come from the live RSI store or the exact pledge shown in your account, with its currency, taxes, refund terms, and any regional restrictions.
Price details to verify when a new offer appears
- The amount and currency displayed for your region.
- Whether the price is a one-time pledge or an add-on to an existing package.
- Whether the listing contains Squadron 42 itself or only Star Citizen assets.
- Whether access is digital, physical, or both.
- Any stated refund, transfer, gifting, or account-locking conditions.
- Whether taxes or delivery charges are added at checkout.
A lower price on an old page is not a bargain if the page no longer grants the entitlement you need.
Who should buy now, and who should wait?
Because the game is not downloadable and current retail terms are unresolved, “worth buying” depends less on a feature checklist than on your tolerance for waiting and uncertainty.
| Your situation | Most defensible choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You already have a pledge that explicitly contains Squadron 42. | Keep the entitlement and wait for release information. | Buying again may duplicate access; the account record is the relevant evidence. |
| You want to play a single-player space campaign immediately. | Wait. | No downloadable version is available now. |
| You are comfortable waiting for an announced target and accept schedule changes. | Consider a purchase only after confirming the live offer and contents. | The Q2 2027 target is not a guaranteed date, and current terms are incomplete. |
| You mainly want Star Citizen’s persistent online universe. | Evaluate Star Citizen separately. | Its package does not automatically establish Squadron 42 ownership. |
| You are shopping for a collector item or physical extras. | Wait for an official edition announcement. | No current collector contents are confirmed. |
| You dislike pre-release uncertainty or need a firm delivery date. | Do not buy yet. | The product is unreleased and the launch date remains a target window. |
Reasons a patient buyer might still be interested
- You specifically want a story-driven, single-player space game rather than an online persistent universe.
- You are willing to wait through development and testing without immediate access.
- You understand that a pledge’s final terms may matter more than the marketing name.
- You can afford to leave the money committed while the release window remains uncertain.
Reasons to hold your money
- You expect an installer, benchmark, or playable demo immediately after checkout.
- You need a confirmed launch day for a purchase decision.
- You are relying on an old price or a package screenshot.
- You want to compare standard and collector editions that have not been announced.
How to compare future Squadron 42 offers
When RSI publishes current products, compare the offers in a fixed order. This prevents a low headline price or an attractive ship bonus from hiding the fact that the campaign is absent.

- Item is intended for adults, over the age of 18. This is not a child’s toy.
- Not a complete game. Prior ownership of Fulcrum Leader core game required.
- Add Soviet Arctic fighters into your Fulcrum Leader missions!
- Bagged format
- Confirm the product name. The listing must identify Squadron 42, not merely Star Citizen or a ship package.
- Separate existing access from new access. Check My Hangar before adding an item to your cart.
- Identify the scope. Is it the single-player game only, or a bundle with Star Citizen and other assets?
- Read the included-content panel. Record digital files, physical goods, bonuses, insurance, UEC, and any restrictions exactly as written.
- Check platform and delivery language. Confirm where the game will be delivered and when access is expected.
- Check price and checkout terms. Note currency, taxes, recurring charges if any, refunds, gifting, and account linkage.
- Compare the release statement. A target window should be labelled as such; do not treat it as a firm date.
- Save the receipt and pledge details. Keep the order confirmation and a copy of the contents in case the listing changes.
A simple comparison sheet can use these columns: pledge name, Squadron 42 entitlement, Star Citizen entitlement, digital items, physical items, price and currency, release wording, and refund terms. Fill a cell with “not stated” when the official listing does not answer it rather than guessing.

Mistake: assuming every Star Citizen package includes the campaign
Packages have been split and recombined over the years. Expand the exact pledge in My Hangar and look for Squadron 42 by name.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMistake: treating a target window as a launch date
Q2 2027 is the latest announced window, not a guaranteed day. Wait for a specific official date before making time-sensitive plans.
Mistake: using the 2016 prices as current pricing
The $45 component price and $15 add-on were stated in a 2016 notice and were subject to change. They cannot validate a current checkout total.
Mistake: buying from an old or incomplete listing
Check the live RSI product page, the contents panel, and your own account. A reseller or archived screenshot may omit changed terms.
Mistake: expecting to test the game after purchase
There is no download while the game remains in development. A pledge does not provide a present-day trial or performance check.
Mistake: paying twice because an entitlement is hard to find
Search all historical pledges in My Hangar before purchasing. If the wording conflicts with your records, ask RSI support to clarify the account rather than creating another pledge.

What “included” should mean at launch
At launch, the meaningful question will be whether your entitlement grants the Squadron 42 game and what additional items the specific edition promises. Do not assume that general pledge examples apply to this product. RSI’s FAQ mentions assets such as ships, insurance, UEC, and manuals in the broader package system; it does not establish that every Squadron 42 purchase will contain them.
Read the final listing for four separate categories:
- Game access: a clear Squadron 42 entitlement linked to your RSI account.
- Other game access: whether Star Citizen is included separately or not.
- Digital extras: items such as manuals, soundtracks, or bonuses only if explicitly listed.
- Physical extras: boxed materials or collector objects only if the edition specifies them, with shipping and regional terms.
If a feature is not in the official contents panel, treat it as unconfirmed rather than implied by a marketing image.
Is Squadron 42 worth buying now? A practical verdict
For most new buyers, waiting is the rational choice. The game cannot be downloaded, the Q2 2027 date is only a target window, and current price and edition details are not confirmed. Waiting preserves your ability to compare complete offers and removes the risk of paying for an entitlement you already have.
A purchase can make sense for a patient fan only after the live RSI listing clearly identifies Squadron 42, states the price and contents, and presents terms you accept. Existing backers should not buy again until My Hangar proves that their current pledge lacks the campaign.
The strongest evidence today is therefore not a blanket yes or no. Squadron 42 may suit someone who specifically wants its planned single-player space adventure and accepts a wait; it is not a suitable “buy it and play tonight” purchase.
