You do not need to buy Star Citizen to own Squadron 42. RSI has offered Squadron 42 as a separate, standalone pledge. However, Squadron 42 is still in development and is not currently available to download or play. An RSI account that owns a pledge containing Squadron 42 is expected to receive download and play access only after development is complete, testing is finished, and the game is released. RSI has not stated a release date on its current support page.
The short answer
Squadron 42 and Star Citizen are separate products that share the same fictional universe. Squadron 42 is the planned single-player campaign. Star Citizen is the persistent-universe game built around online exploration, missions, trading, combat and other player activities. You can choose one without automatically buying the other.
That distinction does not mean Squadron 42 is playable today. RSI’s support article “Where can I download Squadron 42?”, updated February 4, 2026, says: “Squadron 42 is currently in development and is not available for download.” The company says owners of a qualifying pledge will be able to download and play after development is complete, the game has been tested and it has been released. The page gives no release date.

Squadron 42 is the single-player campaign
Squadron 42 is designed as a story-driven, single-player campaign. You follow a structured narrative rather than joining Star Citizen’s persistent online universe. Characters, missions and progression are presented as part of a campaign experience, so the intended focus is on story and authored missions instead of an open-ended shared world.

RSI’s onboarding checklist describes it as “the single-player campaign” and confirms that it remains in development. Owning a Squadron 42 pledge is therefore an entitlement to the campaign when it is released, not a way to access the currently playable Star Citizen universe.
Star Citizen is the persistent-universe module
Star Citizen is the online persistent-universe component. RSI’s package-split explanation from February 9, 2016, called the Star Citizen digital download access to the Persistent Universe module. Its packages generally include a ship and other account items, although exact contents vary by package and can change.
The two products use the same setting and fictional history, but shared lore is not the same as a purchase requirement. You do not have to own Star Citizen simply because Squadron 42 takes place in that universe.

They can be purchased separately
RSI’s checklist identifies a Squadron 42 standalone pledge as the exception to packages that contain Star Citizen. The 2016 package-split announcement also explained that customers could choose either the campaign or the persistent universe and optionally add the other. That announcement is historical context; its old prices should not be treated as current prices or proof of what a present-day package costs.

Can you download Squadron 42 now?
No. RSI currently says that Squadron 42 is not available for download. The same status appears in the “Get Started: Checklist,” updated April 16, 2026, which says the single-player campaign is still in development and not yet available.
Do not interpret ownership of a pledge as immediate access. At present, a pledge containing Squadron 42 records your future entitlement. RSI’s wording sets three conditions for play access: development must be completed, the game must be tested, and it must be released. Until those conditions are met, there is no Squadron 42 installation to launch through the RSI launcher.
RSI has not supplied a release date in the current support material described above. Any date quoted elsewhere should be treated as a prediction or older statement rather than a confirmed schedule unless RSI updates its official information.
How to check whether your RSI account owns Squadron 42
The safest way to determine what you own is to inspect the account that holds the pledge. Package names and contents can differ, and owning Star Citizen does not automatically prove that Squadron 42 is included.

- Sign in to the RSI account you used when purchasing or claiming the pledge.
- Open your account’s pledge, package or order details and read the included items, not just the package title.
- Look specifically for a Squadron 42 entitlement. A package that lists only Star Citizen and a ship should not be assumed to include the campaign.
- Check whether the entry is a Squadron 42 standalone pledge or a combined package. The distinction tells you which product your account owns.
- Save the order or pledge information before buying anything else. If the account already contains Squadron 42, purchasing another package may create an unnecessary duplicate.
RSI’s public guidance establishes that the products are separable, but it does not guarantee the contents of every historical or current account package. Your account page is the authoritative place to verify your own entitlement.
Do you need Star Citizen to install or play Squadron 42?
No. The products are separate pledges, so Star Citizen is not a prerequisite for owning the Squadron 42 campaign. When Squadron 42 is released, an account with a qualifying Squadron 42 pledge should be able to download that game without purchasing Star Citizen solely to unlock it.
There are two important qualifications:
- Separate ownership: A standalone Squadron 42 pledge does not automatically include Star Citizen. If you want the persistent universe as well, verify that your account has a Star Citizen entitlement or buy one separately.
- Separate availability: A standalone pledge does not make Squadron 42 playable before release. RSI currently says the campaign cannot be downloaded.
The RSI launcher instructions, updated July 27, 2026, say that most game packages contain Star Citizen and a ship, with the Squadron 42 standalone pledge as the exception. That wording is useful for identifying package types, but you should still read the exact contents attached to your account.
PC requirements to prepare for Squadron 42
RSI’s “Game and Launcher Requirements” page, updated December 17, 2025, lists the following requirements for its games, including Squadron 42. These are the publisher’s stated requirements, not independent performance tests, and RSI may change them before release.

Because Squadron 42 is not released, there is no final, independently verified performance profile for the shipping game in the information available here. Recheck RSI’s requirements before installing or upgrading hardware.
When an SSD upgrade makes sense
An internal SSD is relevant if your PC does not have enough suitable space for the published 150+ GB requirement and normal update headroom. A practical search description such as “1 TB internal SSD” can help you compare capacities, but RSI does not recommend a particular capacity, model or brand.
Before purchasing, identify your computer’s available interface and form factor. A desktop may accept a 2.5-inch SATA drive or an M.2 drive; a laptop may have only one M.2 slot or may require replacing an existing drive. Check the motherboard or laptop manual, available slot, connector type and operating-system migration options. Capacity alone does not guarantee compatibility.

You want only the story campaign
Choose a Squadron 42 standalone pledge if it is offered in your region and account store. Confirm that the product description lists Squadron 42 and understand that the entitlement is for future access because the game is not currently downloadable. You do not need to add Star Citizen just to obtain the campaign.

You want the online universe now
You need a Star Citizen entitlement. A Squadron 42 pledge by itself does not automatically grant access to Star Citizen. Review the package contents for the Star Citizen game entitlement and any included ship or other items before completing checkout.
You want both experiences
Look for a package that explicitly includes both products, or combine separate pledges where RSI allows it. Compare the actual contents on your account rather than relying on an old package name or a historical price. The 2016 split announcement explains the product relationship but is not a current catalog.
You already own a package but cannot tell what it contains
Do not buy again immediately. Sign in, open the pledge details and list each entitlement. If the listing remains unclear, use RSI account support with the order or pledge identifier so the ownership record can be interpreted correctly.
What happens when Squadron 42 is released?
RSI’s launcher guidance indicates that game access is tied to the RSI account holding the pledge. Once development is complete, testing is finished and the game is released, the expected process is:
- Sign in to the RSI account that owns the Squadron 42 pledge.
- Install or update the official RSI launcher.
- Use the launcher’s game list to locate Squadron 42, if it is displayed for your account.
- Choose an SSD location with enough free capacity for the game and future updates.
- Allow the launcher to download and verify the files, then apply any available patch.
- Launch the campaign from the same account and confirm that your entitlement is recognized.
These are release-time expectations based on RSI’s account and launcher model, not instructions for downloading Squadron 42 today. The present support status remains “not available for download.”
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Assuming a Star Citizen purchase includes Squadron 42: Check the listed entitlements. The products can be separate.
- Assuming a Squadron 42 pledge includes Star Citizen: A standalone campaign pledge does not automatically add the persistent universe.
- Buying because a release date appears online: RSI’s current support page does not state a release date. Treat unofficial dates as unconfirmed.
- Expecting a download immediately after purchase: The campaign is still in development and unavailable for download.
- Using 2016 prices as current prices: The package-split announcement is historical; current prices and package contents must be checked in the RSI store.
- Installing to a nearly full hard drive: RSI lists a 150+ GB SSD requirement and additional space guidance. Leave room for updates and the operating system.
- Buying an incompatible SSD: Verify your PC’s interface, form factor and available slot before ordering.
Bottom line for buyers
Squadron 42 is a standalone product, and Star Citizen is not required to own it. The campaign and persistent universe share a setting but have separate pledges. The practical catch is timing: RSI says Squadron 42 remains in development and cannot currently be downloaded or played. Check your RSI account’s exact pledge contents, avoid assuming one product includes the other, and verify the latest hardware requirements and availability information before spending money or upgrading your PC.
