No—do not buy the PC version of Splinter Cell: Double Agent specifically for online co-op. Ubisoft’s current PC listing says that online features are no longer supported and that “Multiplayer and co-op modes are no longer functional.” Steam displays the same warning. The original PC manual documents co-op challenges and internet play, but that describes the 2006 release, not a service that still works today.
You could still buy it for the single-player stealth campaign, historical interest, or a collection. That is a separate decision: current listings identify Windows 10 and Windows 11 support, require a Ubisoft account and Ubisoft Connect, and leave modern performance, price, regional availability, and any unofficial network workaround unverified.
The short answer for a co-op buyer
If two people want to purchase Splinter Cell: Double Agent on PC and play its co-op missions online, the practical answer is no. The publisher and Steam both explicitly say the online functions are unsupported and that multiplayer and co-op are no longer functional. That is stronger than a warning that matchmaking is quiet or that servers are difficult to find: the current store information says the feature itself should not be expected to operate.

What Ubisoft and Steam currently disclose
The most important evidence is on the live product listings rather than in old reviews or forum posts. Ubisoft’s PC page identifies the game as a September 1, 2006 release and includes this notice: “Online features for this game are no longer supported. Multiplayer and co-op modes are no longer functional.” Steam repeats the same warning on its store page.
“No longer supported” can sometimes mean that a publisher has stopped customer-service assistance while a service continues to work intermittently. The additional sentence matters here: Ubisoft specifically says multiplayer and co-op modes are “no longer functional.” Steam reproduces that wording for prospective buyers. You should not interpret the presence of an old multiplayer menu, a product description that mentions co-op, or a listing for a multiplayer game as evidence that two current PC installations can connect.
The notice applies to the online features associated with the listed PC release. It does not claim that every local or single-player activity is unavailable, nor does it promise that an unofficial networking project could never exist. It does establish that the supported, ordinary purchase path is not a co-op solution.

Why old pages say that co-op exists
The original manual is historical evidence
The original PC manual describes internet play through DemonWare and includes co-op challenges. That documentation explains why older box copy, archived reviews, videos, and forum answers may tell you that Double Agent has cooperative content. They are referring to what shipped in 2006, when the service infrastructure was intended to be available.
Both statements can be true at once:
- The PC release originally included co-op challenges and online play.
- The current publisher and Steam listings say those online and co-op functions are no longer functional.
The manual cannot restore the service. It is useful for confirming the game’s original feature set, not for proving present-day availability.
Do not confuse platform versions
Double Agent was released on multiple platforms, and contemporary discussions often mix their features, controls, and network behavior. A console video or an archived PC guide may show a mode that is not usable on today’s PC listing. Before relying on any old instructions, identify the exact edition, storefront, and executable you would be installing. The official PC listing is the relevant authority for a PC purchase.
What you actually need to buy and launch the PC version
Ubisoft’s current PC listing names Windows 10 and Windows 11 and says the PC content is added to Ubisoft Connect. It also requires a Ubisoft account and the Ubisoft Connect launcher. Steam’s listing includes legacy requirements and states that the Steam client supports Windows 10 and later.

When buying it can still make sense
You want the single-player campaign
The co-op warning does not automatically describe the entire game as unplayable. If your goal is the solo stealth campaign, the purchase question changes to one of price, compatibility, and personal interest. Check the live listing, confirm that your account can access the required launcher, and compare the asking price with your willingness to play a 2006 release.
You are collecting older PC games
A collector may value owning a legitimate PC release even when a network feature has been retired. In that case, the discontinued co-op service is a limitation to record alongside the purchase, not a reason to expect a complete modern multiplayer package.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYou want to study the original design
The manual’s description of co-op challenges and internet play can make the game interesting as a snapshot of mid-2000s multiplayer design. That is a historical use, not an operational one. Buy it for the campaign or archival interest only if you would remain satisfied after removing online co-op from the feature list.

When you should not buy it
Co-op is the main reason for the purchase
If your decision depends on inviting a friend into an online mission, the official status notice resolves the question. Do not count on the standard PC installation to provide that experience.
You need official support for network problems
Because the publisher says the online features are no longer supported, customer support should not be treated as a path to reactivating co-op. You may be able to receive help with account or launcher access, but that is different from restoring the retired game service.
You need a known modern-PC experience
The available official pages do not provide a modern benchmark, compatibility percentage, or tested configuration matrix. If your purchase depends on guaranteed behavior at a particular resolution, refresh rate, controller setup, or graphics card, obtain a store refund-compatible copy and test it within the applicable policy rather than assuming the 2006 software will behave like a current release.

How to check the purchase before spending money
- Identify the storefront and edition. Read the complete listing for the PC version you intend to buy. Do not use a console description or an archived page as a substitute.
- Read the network warning. Confirm that you understand the statement that online features are unsupported and multiplayer and co-op are no longer functional.
- Verify account requirements. Make sure you can use a Ubisoft account and install or sign in to Ubisoft Connect. A Steam purchase may still involve the Steam client in addition to the Ubisoft account requirement.
- Check the operating-system information. Ubisoft names Windows 10 and Windows 11 for the PC listing, while Steam states that its client supports Windows 10 and later. These labels are prerequisites, not a performance guarantee.
- Check the live price and region. Prices, taxes, inventory, editions, and availability can change by country and date. They were not established by the available official information, so verify them directly before checkout.
- Decide as if co-op were removed. If the solo campaign is not worth the purchase on its own, do not proceed because an old manual or forum post mentions co-op.
- Keep the purchase reversible where possible. If the store offers a return policy, learn its time and playtime limits before launching the game. That gives you a way to check installation and solo operation without pretending the retired network mode is supported.
What to expect during installation
The supported path is an account-and-launcher setup, not a server-revival procedure. A typical buyer should be prepared for the following sequence:

- Install the storefront client associated with the purchase, if applicable.
- Install Ubisoft Connect when the PC listing requests it.
- Sign in to, or create, the required Ubisoft account.
- Allow the game license to be associated with that account as directed by the launcher.
- Install the game to a location with enough free space for the storefront’s current package.
- Launch the single-player content and confirm that the game starts on your system.
Do not interpret a successful installation or the appearance of a multiplayer menu as a successful network test. The official status notice concerns the functionality of the online and co-op modes themselves.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting: separate launch problems from the co-op limitation
The game will not launch
- Confirm that the Ubisoft account is the one associated with the purchase.
- Check that Ubisoft Connect and the storefront client are updated through their normal channels.
- Re-read the PC listing’s Windows information and compare it with the operating system on the computer.
- Use the storefront’s standard file-verification or repair option if one is provided.
- Check the store’s refund rules before spending extensive time on unsupported fixes.
These steps address account, launcher, or installation issues. They do not alter Ubisoft’s statement that online co-op is no longer functional.
The solo campaign runs but online co-op does not
That result is consistent with the current official disclosures. Do not assume that opening ports, changing a router setting, or reinstalling the game will restore a retired service. Network troubleshooting can solve a local connection problem; it cannot by itself bring back infrastructure that the publisher says is no longer supported.

Community references to possible workarounds exist, but no method has been verified here against authoritative project documentation, maintenance history, or repeatable testing. Treat such instructions as experimental. Before downloading anything, determine who maintains it, whether the files are still updated, which game edition they support, and what account or security risks they introduce. Do not pay for the PC version on the assumption that an unverified workaround will succeed.
Why unofficial co-op claims require extra caution
Restoring an old online feature can involve more than a patch. A method might depend on a fan server, modified executable, compatibility layer, network tunnel, or a particular regional build. One component can stop working after a launcher update, certificate change, hosting shutdown, or operating-system update. A guide written for one edition may also be incompatible with another storefront’s files.
Since no authoritative, maintained workaround has been established for this decision, the responsible conclusion is limited: an unofficial approach may be discussed by players, but its reliability and safety are unknown. That uncertainty is materially different from a supported co-op feature and should not be hidden in a buying recommendation.
A practical decision table
| Your priority | Buying recommendation | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Play online co-op with a friend through the normal PC game | Do not buy for this purpose. | Ubisoft and Steam state that multiplayer and co-op are no longer functional. |
| Play the solo campaign at a price you consider fair | Possibly buy after checking the live listing. | The online warning does not say that all single-player content is unavailable, but modern performance and value are not established. |
| Collect the original PC release | Buy only with the co-op limitation recorded. | The manual documents original co-op challenges, while the current service is retired. |
| Experiment with community networking projects | Only if you accept unverified results and security risks. | No authoritative, repeatable workaround has been confirmed. |
| Require guaranteed compatibility on specific hardware | Test through a reversible purchase policy or skip it. | The official pages do not provide current benchmarks or a hardware compatibility matrix. |
Questions to answer before checkout
- Would I still want this game if the multiplayer menu were permanently unavailable?
- Can I use a Ubisoft account and Ubisoft Connect on the computer where I plan to install it?
- Does the live store page list the edition and operating-system information I need?
- Have I checked the current price, region, taxes, and return policy instead of relying on an old article?
- Am I treating community workaround claims as unverified experiments rather than promised features?
Final verdict
Splinter Cell: Double Agent is not worth buying on PC for co-op. The original PC manual confirms that co-op challenges and internet play were part of the 2006 design, but Ubisoft’s current listing and Steam’s listing both say that online features are no longer supported and that multiplayer and co-op are no longer functional. Consider the PC version only for its solo campaign, collection value, or historical interest—and only after checking the live price, edition, account requirements, and compatibility on your own Windows 10 or Windows 11 setup.
