No. Sons of the Forest does not support crossplay. The game is available on PC through Steam, and no PlayStation 5 or Xbox version is listed in the available platform information. A PC player therefore cannot join friends playing on a console. Cross-progression is also unavailable.
The distinction matters because The Forest, the earlier game from Endnight Games, did receive a PlayStation 4 release. That console version is not Sons of the Forest.

What “crossplay” means for Sons of the Forest
Crossplay, also called cross-platform multiplayer, lets people in the same game session use different hardware platforms—for example, a Windows PC player joining someone on PlayStation or Xbox. It requires both a console edition and network services that connect the editions.
Sons of the Forest does not meet that condition. Its verified release platform is PC through Steam. Without a PlayStation or Xbox edition, there is no console-to-PC matchmaking path to use.

Two related features are often confused with crossplay:
- Cross-progression: carrying a character, inventory or world save between platforms. This is not available for Sons of the Forest.
- Cross-save: synchronizing saves between two installations, even when multiplayer is not involved. A PC-only Steam release does not provide a console save destination.
Playing on two PCs is still PC multiplayer, not crossplay. Friends can use different Windows computers and Steam accounts, but they are using the same PC edition.

The Steam store listing records an early-access launch on 23 February 2023 and the full PC release on 22 February 2024. The available platform information identifies Steam PC as the supported release.

“No release found” is deliberately narrower than saying a console version can never exist. It describes the editions identified in the available listings, not a permanent promise about every future platform.

Can PC players play together?
Yes. Sons of the Forest includes multiplayer on its PC release, so a group of people with the Steam version can play together. Everyone in that group must have access to the PC edition; owning a PlayStation or Xbox copy of another game does not provide access.
The reported eight-player figure comes from third-party aggregator summaries rather than a retrieved developer or Steam statement. If your group is larger, plan separate sessions unless the in-game lobby and the current update explicitly allow more. In-game menus and the host’s connection determine the practical experience even when a published player limit is cited.
How to play with friends on Steam
The exact menu wording can change with updates, but the process is the same: every participant installs the Steam PC edition, the host creates a multiplayer game, and the other players join through Steam or the game’s session browser.
- Install the same PC edition. Each player should install Sons of the Forest from Steam and allow Steam to finish any pending update. Mismatched builds can prevent a lobby from appearing or a connection from completing.
- Confirm Steam accounts and invitations. Add the people you intend to play with to your Steam friends list. The host can then use the in-game multiplayer option and choose a private or public session according to the group’s preference.
- Have one person host. The host creates the world and controls its save. Select the multiplayer mode from the game’s start screen rather than launching a solo session if friends need to join.
- Invite or join. Friends can accept the Steam invitation, use the join option shown by Steam, or locate the host’s session in the in-game browser when it is listed. If the lobby is private, an invitation or other permission from the host is required.
- Keep the host’s save in mind. The world belongs to the host’s session. Agree in advance who will host recurring play so the group knows where the latest world state is stored.
These steps describe PC-to-PC play. There is no additional setting that turns a Steam lobby into a PlayStation or Xbox lobby.

What friends need before joining
Before troubleshooting a failed invitation, check the basics that apply to every member of the group:
- A Windows PC capable of running the Steam edition and enough local storage for the installation and updates.
- A Steam account with the game installed and updated.
- A stable internet connection for the host and each participant.
- Steam friends or another supported invitation route configured so the host can send an invite.
- The same game branch and compatible build. A player using a different beta or test branch may not see or enter the same session.
These are access requirements, not crossplay features. Meeting them enables PC multiplayer only.

A console player cannot join a Sons of the Forest Steam lobby because there is no verified console edition in the available platform information. A console cannot run the Windows Steam build simply by receiving an invitation, and a PC cannot join a nonexistent console server.
Buying The Forest on PlayStation does not solve this mismatch. The two games are separate releases. The predecessor’s PS4 availability is the source of much of the confusion, but it does not indicate that Sons of the Forest has a PS4, PS5 or Xbox port.

Cross-progression and save compatibility
Cross-progression would let you start on one platform and continue on another with the same player progress. The available information identifies cross-progression as unavailable for Sons of the Forest.
For a PC group, the more immediate issue is host dependence. A multiplayer world is associated with the host’s save, so the group should decide who will maintain that save and make backups according to the game’s own PC save options. If the host’s computer or account is unavailable, another player should not assume that the world will automatically appear on a different platform.
Do not treat Steam Cloud synchronization, if enabled for a particular save or configuration, as cross-platform progression. Cloud synchronization within a PC ecosystem is different from transferring progress to PlayStation or Xbox.

One aggregator summary has suggested a possible console release in late 2026, but that claim was not confirmed by an official developer announcement or a Steam statement in the available material. Crossplay was also unconfirmed in that report.

Until Endnight Games or an official platform store publishes a specific edition and multiplayer policy, treat such a rumor as unverified. A future console port would not automatically guarantee crossplay: the developer would still need to implement shared matchmaking, account handling, updates and save rules across platforms.
If you are deciding whether to buy the game for a mixed-platform group, base the decision on the currently listed PC release rather than a rumored date. Recheck the official store pages and developer announcements immediately before purchasing because platform and crossplay information can change.
Troubleshooting PC multiplayer
The friend cannot see the lobby
- Confirm that both players are running the Steam PC edition, not different games or console versions.
- Check that Steam has completed updates on both computers.
- Have the host recreate the lobby and send a new invitation.
- Verify that the session is not set to private when the friend is attempting to find it through a public browser.
The invitation opens but joining fails
- Restart Steam and the game on both computers to clear a stale session.
- Confirm that neither player is on a separate test or beta branch.
- Temporarily check local firewall or security-software rules that could block the game or Steam networking, following the software vendor’s guidance.
- Try a new session to determine whether the problem affects one saved world or every lobby.
A returning group cannot find its old world
- Ask the original host to launch the save; another player’s account will not automatically become the host.
- Check that the host is using the same Steam account and PC installation that created or last saved the world.
- Do not expect a PlayStation or Xbox installation to display a PC save, because cross-progression is not supported.
These checks address PC connectivity and save ownership. None can add console crossplay to the game.

Because crossplay and platform availability are volatile, check three items whenever you revisit the question:
- The current Sons of the Forest listing on Steam for supported platforms and edition status.
- An official Endnight Games announcement for any newly released console version or multiplayer policy.
- The platform store listing for the exact console, if one appears, including whether online multiplayer is shared with PC.
A console store page by itself would establish availability, but it would not prove crossplay. Look for explicit wording about cross-platform multiplayer before assuming that players on different systems can share a server.
Bottom line for buyers and players
Sons of the Forest is a Steam PC multiplayer game, not a cross-platform game. PC players can form a group on Steam, while friends on PlayStation or Xbox cannot join that session under the currently identified releases. The earlier game’s PS4 version should not be used as evidence for a Sons of the Forest console port, and an unverified rumor about a late-2026 console release should not be treated as a feature announcement.
