Short answer: Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is worth considering when guest characters are a major reason you want a fast, chaotic kart racer. It is not a safe purchase if you assume the standard edition includes every crossover. SEGA splits guests between free updates and paid packs, and the original Season Pass and Season Pass Two contain different content.
Choose the character first, identify the update or pass that delivers that racer, then check the platform-specific listing and current price. The base game has substantial appeal even without a particular guest—track-switching portals, vehicle customization, local multiplayer and online races—but reviews also report item-balance problems, online errors, a relatively small launch course selection and extra cost as downloadable content accumulates.
The buying decision in one table
| Question | What the available evidence supports | What you should verify |
|---|---|---|
| Are crossover characters included in the standard game? | No single all-crossovers promise exists. Guests arrive through free updates and separately sold packs. | The exact character, update or pack, edition and storefront listing. |
| Which guests are free updates? | SEGA announced Hatsune Miku, Joker and Ichiban Kasuga as free-update racers. | Whether the update is live on your platform and whether any download or account requirement applies. |
| What does the original Season Pass cover? | Crossover packs based on Minecraft, SpongeBob SquarePants, PAC-MAN, Mega Man, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Avatar Legends. | Whether your desired racer is in that pass rather than Season Pass Two. |
| Does the game itself have value without a guest? | Reviews praise chaotic racing, track experimentation, portals that move you to another course section and vehicle customization. | Your tolerance for item balance, online reliability and the launch course count. |
| How many people can play? | SEGA lists one to four local players and up to 12 online players, with cross-play announced for supported platforms. | Current cross-play support, subscription requirements and platform-specific restrictions. |
| How much will it cost? | The total is the current base-game price plus any required pass or individual pack. Prices vary by region and platform. | Digital or physical edition, currency, bundle contents, discounts and duplicate content you may already own. |
How the crossover roster is sold
The roster is a collection of separate delivery routes, not one uniform bonus for every buyer. SEGA has used free updates for some named guests while placing other collaborations in paid Season Pass content. That distinction matters because a character shown in a trailer, store banner or social post may not be part of the edition in your basket.

Free-update racers
SEGA announced Hatsune Miku, Joker and Ichiban Kasuga as free-update racers. “Free” here describes the update route, not a guarantee that every platform has the same rollout date or that the character is present on the disc or in the initial download. Check your platform’s update history and the in-game roster after installing the latest patch.
The original Season Pass
SEGA’s purchase guide identifies the original Season Pass as the home for crossover packs themed around Minecraft, SpongeBob SquarePants, PAC-MAN, Mega Man, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Avatar Legends. A pass is a bundle of its specified packs; it is not a license for every guest ever announced. Store pages can describe a pack by its franchise while leaving the individual racer, vehicle or cosmetic contents in a separate item list, so read the full description before purchasing.

Season Pass Two is a separate product
Season Pass Two is distinct from the original Season Pass. SEGA’s purchase guidance warns that the products contain different content. Owning one should not be treated as ownership of the other, and buying a bundle without checking its included items can leave you paying twice for a character you already have while still missing the one you wanted.
Why a character list needs a date
Guest content is a live-service-style buying question. The dated sources describe announcements and launch-era plans, not a permanently fixed roster. Before checkout, open the current listing for your platform, expand the included-content section and compare it with the character’s official update or pack announcement. If the listing names only a franchise, find the individual racer confirmation rather than inferring that every character from that franchise is playable.
What you get from the base game itself
A crossover is only worthwhile if the underlying racer can hold your attention between guest-content launches. Reviews describe a deliberately chaotic kart-racing format rather than a straightforward lap simulator. Courses can change during a race, and the portal mechanic sends the field into another track section mid-event. That transition is the game’s clearest mechanical identity: route knowledge alone is not enough because the next section can alter the best line, hazards and opportunities to overtake.
Track variety and experimentation
The portal system gives races a changing rhythm. A player may begin learning one course and then have to react to a different section without leaving the same event. PC Gamer praised this experimentation, while Tom’s Guide highlighted the mid-race track switch as a distinctive feature. The trade-off is that the launch course selection was described as more limited than reviewers wanted, so variety depends partly on how often you replay the available routes and on post-launch additions.
Vehicle customization
PC Gamer considered the customization a strength. The attraction is not just collecting guest names; tuning and configuring vehicles gives the base game a progression and personalization loop that remains relevant when you race as a standard Sonic character. If you dislike changing setups or prefer a small, fixed roster, the crossover packs will provide less additional value than they do for a player who enjoys building different vehicles for different race conditions.

Local and online formats
SEGA’s product information lists one to four local players and up to 12 online players. SEGA also announced cross-play across supported platforms. Those figures describe the advertised modes, not a promise that every mode, race type or platform combination uses the full player count. Confirm the current support matrix and any console online-service requirement before buying for a group.
What reviewers liked—and what could frustrate you
PC Gamer’s January 16, 2026 assessment
PC Gamer awarded the game 79 and described it as robust and fun while also messy and frustrating. Mollie Taylor’s verdict called it “Heaps of fun and plenty chaotic, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is the closest we’ve ever gotten to Mario Kart on PC… for better and worse.” The positive side of that qualified judgment is the feel of the racing, track experimentation and customization. The negative side includes online errors, item balance and a rising total cost as downloadable content accumulates.
PC Gamer also reported that some DLC racers are not voiced. That is a practical consideration for buyers choosing a character because of personality and presentation: a guest can be playable without receiving the same voice treatment as the launch cast.
Tom’s Guide’s September 18, 2025 assessment
Tom’s Guide likewise emphasized the portal-based track switching and multiplayer appeal. It described 23 voiced characters at launch and a planned expansion to 56 through post-launch updates. Those figures belong to that 2025 review’s launch-era description and forecast; they are not a current, independently verified roster count. The review also flagged fewer courses than desired at launch and items that could feel overpowering.
How to interpret the criticism
The complaints are most important for a buyer who expects a polished competitive racer or a complete one-time package. Item-heavy chaos is part of the design, but balance problems can make a race feel decided by a pickup rather than driving. Online errors matter more if your main reason to buy is a regular remote group. A guest-focused buyer should therefore evaluate two separate risks: whether the desired character is accessible at an acceptable cost and whether the core races are enjoyable when that character is not the center of attention.

A character-first buying process
Use this sequence before selecting an edition. It prevents the common mistake of buying the base game first and discovering later that the favorite guest requires a different product.
- Name the exact racer. Write down the character, not just the franchise. A pack themed around a property can contain several kinds of content, and a trailer appearance does not establish that every featured character is playable.
- Classify the access route. Check whether SEGA identifies the racer as a free update, part of the original Season Pass, part of Season Pass Two or an individual purchase.
- Check the edition you are considering. Compare the standard, deluxe or bundled listing’s included-content panel with the official pack description. Do not rely on artwork that shows guests without naming them in the text.
- Match the platform. Confirm the PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, Steam or Epic Games version you will actually use. A promotion, demo or pack can have platform-specific timing and availability.
- Calculate the complete spend. Add the current base-game price to the pass or pack price, using your region’s storefront. If you already own a pass, make sure the bundle is not repurchasing it.
- Check presentation details. If voice acting matters, look for confirmation that the chosen DLC racer is voiced. PC Gamer reported that some DLC racers are not.
- Decide whether the base game still works for you. Imagine racing without the target guest for most sessions. If the answer is no, wait for a discount or skip the purchase unless the character is available through a route you consider reasonably priced.
Platform, edition and storefront checks
Digital versus physical
A physical copy and a digital copy can have different bundle language, update requirements and regional pricing. A disc may still require a download for later guest content, while a digital deluxe listing may combine the game with a pass that is sold separately elsewhere. Read the exact contents attached to the SKU rather than assuming that “deluxe” always means all crossover packs.
PC storefronts
The game is associated with PC storefront availability, and SEGA’s October 2025 announcement named Steam and Epic Games among the platforms receiving a free demo. PC Gamer’s review specifically framed the game as a strong approximation of the console kart-racing formula on PC, but its online-error criticism remains relevant. Check controller support, your account’s regional store and whether the pass is sold as a compatible add-on for your chosen launcher.
Console storefronts
SEGA’s platform announcements include PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and Xbox Series X|S. Storefront pages can differ in price, tax, bundle contents and discount timing. If you are buying for local multiplayer, verify which edition licenses the number of players you need and whether additional controllers or an online subscription are required for the mode you intend to use.
Using the demo and dated signals responsibly
SEGA announced a free demo for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, Steam and Epic Games in October 2025. Demo availability can change, so search the current storefront rather than assuming the announcement guarantees a live download. A demo is most useful for answering questions that a character trailer cannot: whether the handling feels satisfying, whether the portal transition is readable, how aggressive the items feel and whether your hardware maintains a stable experience.

SEGA also announced more than one million units sold worldwide in 2025, counting physical units and digital downloads across platforms. The same October 23 announcement reported an “Overwhelmingly Positive” Steam rating and a PlayStation 5 Metacritic user score above 9.0. Those are snapshots explicitly dated to October 23, 2025, not current live ratings and not proof that every player will share the experience. Treat them as evidence of early interest rather than as a substitute for checking present reviews and service conditions.
Estimating the real cost of crossover ownership
There is no single permanent total because platform prices, regional currencies, sales and future packs change. Build your estimate from the products you actually need:
- Base game: the standard edition on your platform, whether physical or digital.
- Free updates: no listed character-pack price, but you still need the compatible base game and current update.
- Original Season Pass: the pass covering the announced Minecraft, SpongeBob SquarePants, PAC-MAN, Mega Man, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Avatar Legends crossover packs.
- Season Pass Two: a separate pass with different content; do not count it as included merely because you own the original pass.
- Individual packs: an option when you want one collaboration and not the rest, if the platform offers that sale.
Use the live store total at the moment of purchase and record whether tax is included. A discounted base game can look inexpensive while a required pass restores the total to full-price territory. Conversely, a bundle can be better value than buying packs one at a time, but only if it does not duplicate content already in your library.

Buy the base game and the relevant content when…
- You can identify a specific guest and have confirmed its free-update or paid-pack route.
- You enjoy fast, unpredictable races where portals, hazards and items disrupt a perfect lap.
- You will use local multiplayer or online races often enough to justify the base game even between guest releases.
- You like vehicle customization and are willing to learn changing track sections rather than seeking a minimalist arcade racer.
- You have checked the platform listing, current bundle contents and the total price in your region.
Buy only the base game, preferably on sale, when…
- You are interested in the racing system but have not chosen a favorite crossover.
- You want to sample the portal mechanic and customization before committing to a pass.
- You are comfortable treating guests as optional additions and can wait for a discount.
Skip or wait when…
- Your purchase depends entirely on one character whose pack or platform availability you have not confirmed.
- You expect every advertised crossover in the standard edition.
- You need highly reliable online competition and have little tolerance for the errors reviewers reported.
- You want a large launch course library, perfectly balanced items or fully voiced DLC characters.
- The combined base-game and pass price is too close to your budget limit once regional pricing and tax are included.
Practical answers to common questions
Are all crossover characters free?
No. SEGA announced some guests as free updates, including Hatsune Miku, Joker and Ichiban Kasuga, while other collaborations are sold through Season Pass content or individual packs. Verify each character separately.
Do I need the Season Pass for a particular character?
Only if the official pack description places that character in the pass. Check whether it belongs to the original Season Pass or Season Pass Two; the two products are not interchangeable.

Is the standard edition enough for multiplayer?
The base game is the product that provides the advertised local and online racing modes. A pass is needed only for its additional content, not as a general multiplayer unlock. Confirm any platform online-service requirement before inviting a group.
Is the crossover content voiced?
Not uniformly. PC Gamer reported that some DLC racers are not voiced, so check the individual character information if voice performance is important to you.

No current count is established here. Tom’s Guide described 23 voiced characters at launch and projected growth to 56 through post-launch updates. That was a 2025 review-era description and forecast, not a live roster audit.
What should I search for when shopping?
Use the exact phrase “Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds” followed by your platform, such as “Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds for PS5” or “Nintendo Switch edition.” Then open the listing’s included-content and region details before paying.
Verdict
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is a sensible crossover purchase only when the character-access question and the racing-game question both have favorable answers. The free-update guests make the base game more attractive, and the paid packs offer recognizable collaborations, but neither route creates an all-inclusive roster. The core game earns consideration for its chaotic racing, portal transitions, customization and multiplayer formats; reported online errors, strong items, limited launch-course variety and unvoiced DLC racers temper that recommendation. Identify the exact guest, confirm the correct pass or update, check your platform and calculate the complete current cost. If you would still enjoy the races without that guest, buying the base game—ideally when discounted—is the lower-risk choice.
