Someone with access to your router or Wi-Fi may be able to see some network activity, but an unfamiliar device name is not proof that anyone is spying. Check the connected-device list, compare it with the devices and guests in your home, and review available logs before changing settings. Then secure the router and network with current software and strong, unique passwords.
What someone can see through your Wi-Fi
Access matters. Someone who can sign in to your router’s administrator interface may be able to change network settings, including the Wi-Fi password. A device connected to your network may also create security concerns, but a router’s device list does not show who is looking at a particular device or what a person is doing.
Encryption helps protect information sent over Wi-Fi. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends WPA3 Personal when available, or WPA2 Personal; both encrypt network traffic. The FTC describes WPA3 as the newer and best option. WPA and WEP are outdated and insecure.

How to see who is connected to your Wi-Fi
- Open your router’s web interface or your internet service provider’s router app, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Look for a section called Connected devices, Wireless clients, or DHCP clients. The FTC recommends checking these lists to identify devices connected to your router.
- Write down the listed device names and addresses. Compare them with phones, computers, televisions, cameras, smart-home devices, and devices used by recent visitors.
- Ask household members to identify any entries that remain unclear, then check the list again. Device names can be unfamiliar or unhelpful, so treat an unknown entry as a reason to investigate, not proof of surveillance.
The exact labels and amount of detail depend on the router. A device list can help you find connections you do not recognize, but it is not a complete record of who accessed a device or viewed its content.

What to check if a device still looks unfamiliar
Review router logs, if available
Some routers provide logs that may help you investigate activity. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) recommends enabling router logging and periodically reviewing it for signs such as intrusion, probes, or attacks. Its home-router guidance is older, so use your router maker’s current documentation for the location of logs and how to interpret them. A log entry you do not recognize is not, by itself, proof that someone watched your activity.
Check the settings for changes
If you find a connection you cannot identify or notice a router setting has changed unexpectedly, secure the network: change the Wi-Fi password and the router administrator password to separate, unique credentials, and install available router software updates. The administrator password controls access to router settings; it should not be the same as the password you give household members and guests for Wi-Fi.

How to check whether someone accessed a security camera
For concerns about a camera, check the camera’s own access history rather than relying on the router’s device list to show who viewed it. Look for unfamiliar IP addresses or access times that do not fit your normal use, and follow the camera maker’s instructions for reviewing the records. Keep the camera updated. The FTC also recommends considering a separate network for cameras.
Router-level information and a camera’s access history answer different questions: the former concerns devices connected to the network, while the latter may show access to the camera. Neither should be treated as conclusive without context.

Secure the router and Wi-Fi
- Use WPA3 Personal, or WPA2 Personal. Choose WPA3 if your router and devices support it; otherwise, WPA2 Personal is an option the FTC recommends. Do not leave the network on WPA or WEP.
- Change default passwords. Use unique credentials for the router administrator account and for Wi-Fi.
- Install router software updates. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for updates and apply them when available.
- Keep the router firewall on. Check its settings if you are unsure whether it is enabled.
- Turn off features you do not need. The FTC advises disabling remote management, WPS, and UPnP if you do not use them.
- Use a guest network for visitors. It lets guests connect without sharing your main Wi-Fi password and can help keep guest devices separate from the primary network, depending on how the router implements the feature.
Should you replace your router?
First check whether a software update lets your current router use WPA2 Personal or WPA3 Personal. Consider replacing it if, after checking for updates, it still supports only WPA or WEP. That is a security-capability reason to replace a router—not evidence that a new router will detect surveillance. Before choosing a replacement, check compatibility with your internet service provider and home devices, support for WPA2 or WPA3, and whether the manufacturer continues to provide updates.
