No new Sega home console has been announced in the official materials reviewed. Sega’s public strategy is centered on publishing games across platforms and expanding its franchises through licensing and other media. A return is possible in principle, but there is no confirmed console, timetable, hardware plan or evidence of a secret project.
What is Sega doing in gaming now?
Sega describes a business that develops and distributes games for console, mobile, PC and other platforms, as well as arcade machines. Its official Business Portfolio therefore presents Sega as a multi-platform company, not a console maker with a currently announced system.
SEGA SAMMY’s broader group also includes pachislot and pachinko machines. The company says cash generation from that business can support investment in entertainment content and other growth areas. Its public strategy additionally emphasizes extending game properties into films, merchandise, stage productions and music. These corporate priorities show where the company says it is investing; they do not rule out a future hardware decision.
What Sega’s public strategy emphasizes
More games across established platforms
In its FY2025/3 executive interview, SEGA SAMMY described continued investment in development and product capabilities, including new full-game titles, repeat sales and new free-to-play games. It also highlighted multi-platform releases and simultaneous worldwide launches as ways to grow sales from its major franchises. That strategy makes Sega games available across more than one company’s hardware rather than tying them to a Sega-only system.

- The iconic SEGA Genesis console that defined a generation of gaming returns in a slick, miniaturized unit.
- The SEGA Genesis Mini console is loaded with 42 legendary games and is plug and play ready right out of the box!
- Box contents: Sega Genesis Mini console and 2 wired controllers, 40 games + 2 bonus games, power cable and USB adapter, and HDMI cable.
The company’s September 2025 report gives a concrete example: Sega Corporation released Sonic X Shadow Generations, Yakuza 0: Director’s Cut and Puyo Puyo Tetris 2S for Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5, 2025; Atlus released RAIDOU Remastered for it on June 19. The same report said Sonic X Shadow Generations had sold more than two million units worldwide since its October 2024 launch, as of that report. Those are examples of software support for another company’s console, not indications of Sega hardware demand or future hardware plans. See the SS Report archive.
Licensing and media beyond games
SEGA SAMMY reported licensing revenue of ¥5.7 billion for the fiscal year ended March 2022 and ¥13.3 billion for the fiscal year ended March 2025. These are company-reported licensing figures, not total gaming revenue or a measure of console-market potential. The company linked growth to the Sonic films, merchandising and related business in its investor interview.

Why a Sega console comeback is uncertain
A proprietary console could give Sega greater control over hardware, its software ecosystem and the way games reach players. But building a mainstream platform would also mean making a case for buyers to choose it and maintaining a steady supply of software and platform support. Those are general strategic considerations, not a business case Sega has published; the materials reviewed do not quantify the costs or expected return.
Sega’s current multi-platform approach may reduce the need for its own console to reach players, since the company can release games on established systems. That is an inference from its published strategy—not a statement from Sega that it will never make hardware. The sources reviewed do not provide a hardware budget, market-entry plan or forecast for a new console.

- Genesis Classic Console by AtGames
It is also important to distinguish a mainstream console from a limited retro or mini device. A retro product could draw on a legacy catalog without creating a new platform that needs ongoing releases and ecosystem support. No such new Sega product is announced in the materials reviewed, either.
Does Sega’s talk about physical media hint at a new console?
In a 2026 interview covered by TechRadar, Sega president Shuji Utsumi said, “We were originally a platform provider, and of course, we still value the culture of physical media.” He went on to describe working toward treating digital media as important in parallel, rather than abandoning physical media entirely.
That comment reflects Sega’s history and its view of physical and digital distribution. It is not an announcement or teaser for a console, and it does not establish that Sega is developing hardware.

What has—and has not—been confirmed
- Confirmed in the reviewed public materials: Sega operates as a multi-platform game developer and publisher, and Sega and Atlus have released games for Nintendo Switch 2.
- Not confirmed: a new Sega console’s name, launch date, specifications, price, game lineup or development budget.
- Not established: a secret prototype, internal feasibility study or decision to return to hardware.
- Not ruled out: a future change in strategy. The absence of an announcement is not a permanent rejection.
The practical answer is that a Sega console comeback remains speculative. Sega’s public materials document a multi-platform and transmedia strategy, but do not say whether the company will ever return to making a mainstream home console.
