ScreenPal, formerly Screencast-O-Matic, is best downloaded through the vendor’s current official route. ScreenPal directs existing users to visit ScreenPal.com, sign in with their usual credentials, and launch a desktop tool to install the updated application. That guidance does not establish that every installer carrying the ScreenPal or Screencast-O-Matic name is safe, so verify the source before running a file.
What changed from Screencast-O-Matic to ScreenPal?
The product is now branded ScreenPal. The company describes the change as a name and branding update: existing account credentials and content continue, and future updates and feature enhancements are associated with ScreenPal. An older Screencast-O-Matic name on a file or webpage is not, by itself, proof that the download is current or legitimate.
How should you download the desktop application?
- Open ScreenPal’s website by entering ScreenPal.com yourself or using the vendor’s support guidance: ScreenPal’s rebrand and update FAQ.
- Sign in with the account credentials you previously used for Screencast-O-Matic.
- Launch one of ScreenPal’s desktop tools, such as Screenshot, Screen Recorder, or Video Editor, to install the updated application.
- Before opening the installer, confirm it came from the official ScreenPal route. If Windows shows publisher or signature details, check that they are consistent with the expected vendor. Do not rely on a search-result label or the product name alone.
The ScreenPal instructions describe the vendor’s current route, but the sources do not establish a hash or independent malware scan for a specific current installer. They therefore cannot guarantee the safety of every file that claims to be ScreenPal.
What if you see a Microsoft Defender SmartScreen warning?
Microsoft says an Application Reputation warning such as “not commonly downloaded” is not itself an indication that a download is malicious. It is also not a clean bill of health: it means Windows lacks enough reputation information to treat that file as familiar. Microsoft’s explanation is in its SmartScreen FAQ.

- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
- Stop if you are unsure where the file came from; return to ScreenPal’s official website rather than proceeding from an unfamiliar download page.
- Check the file’s publisher or digital-signature information when available, and make sure the source and details fit the expected vendor.
- If you cannot confirm the source or publisher, do not run the installer. A reputation warning alone does not prove malware, but it is not a reason to bypass checks.
Does a Canvas Studio installer apply to every user?
No. Instructure’s Canvas Studio installation guide covers a legacy Screencast-O-Matic add-on in an institutional Canvas context. Its Windows instructions distinguish an administrator-required installer from a non-admin option available inside Studio, and note that the installer version may change. Those organization-specific instructions are not universal directions for all ScreenPal users.
If your school or employer uses Canvas Studio, follow its current instructions and confirm the version with your institution. For general desktop use, follow ScreenPal’s own route.

Can a vendor security rating prove an installer is safe?
No. UpGuard showed ScreenPal a B rating, 750/950, last updated October 6, 2026. UpGuard describes this as an external attack-surface assessment; it is not a malware scan or certification of a particular installer file. See UpGuard’s ScreenPal security report for what that vendor-level rating represents.
The reviewed sources do not provide a current installer hash matched to an independent malware scan. Treat any assurance about a particular file as unverified unless you have evidence specific to that file.
