Rust is not cross-platform between PC and consoles. The PC game and Rust Console Edition are separate products with separate server universes, so a PC player cannot join a console server and a console player cannot join a PC server. Cross-play does exist between PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, but only on servers that support console cross-play. Progress also cannot be transferred between Xbox and PlayStation.
What “cross-platform” means in Rust
In multiplayer games, cross-platform can describe several different features: using the same servers on different devices, playing with friends on another console, carrying an account between systems, or moving purchases and progress. Rust supports only part of that list.

Facepunch Studios’ PC Rust and Rust Console Edition are not simply two graphics settings for the same release. Double Eleven describes the console product as “based on the PC version of the game, designed and optimised for a completely separate and unique console player experience.” The developer also says the games need “separate universes.” In practical terms, each edition has its own server network, accounts and progression environment.
That separation is why a PC player cannot select a console server from the PC server browser, and why a PlayStation or Xbox player cannot enter a PC Rust server. Owning both versions does not merge them into one character or inventory.

The Xbox-to-PlayStation row reflects Double Eleven’s announcement of “cross play servers” in the Rust Console Edition patch 1.02 notice on May 20, 2026. “Supported” matters: not every listing in the console server browser necessarily has the cross-play rule enabled.
Can PC Rust play with Xbox or PlayStation?
No. PC Rust and Rust Console Edition operate as distinct multiplayer environments. A Steam or other PC installation cannot join a Rust Console Edition server, regardless of whether the console player is on Xbox Series X|S or PlayStation 5. Installing the same game updates, using the same display name or playing on the same internet connection does not bridge the editions.

If your group includes one PC player and one console player, you must choose an edition that everyone in the group owns; there is no mixed PC-console party or workaround through a particular server type.
PC Rust is the long-running computer edition maintained by Facepunch Studios. Facepunch’s current game page describes Rust as being in its 12th year and having received more than 380 content updates as of 2026. Those figures describe the PC game and should not be read as a promise that the console edition has identical content, timing or features.
Can PS5 and Xbox play Rust together?
Yes, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S players can play together on Rust Console Edition cross-play servers. Double Eleven’s patch 1.02 announcement said that new servers included “cross play servers,” making the feature an available server option rather than a universal rule for every console server.

How console cross-play works
- Both players need the current Rust Console Edition for their supported console.
- Both players must connect to the same cross-play-enabled server.
- The server may still enforce its own region, capacity, wipe schedule, community rules or account restrictions.
- Cross-play does not turn the console edition into the PC edition; PC players remain outside that server universe.
If you cannot find a friend’s server, first check that you are searching the same server category and region and that the listing is marked for cross-play. A normal Xbox-only or PlayStation-only listing will not necessarily accept players from the other console family.

Which platforms run Rust Console Edition?
The current console release is identified for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Facepunch’s platform information points players toward the PC, PlayStation and Xbox versions, while Double Eleven develops and publishes Rust Console Edition for Xbox Series S/X and PlayStation 5.
Store listings identify a Rust Console Edition release date of June 26, 2025. Store pages and platform policies can change, so check the live store for your country before purchasing. In particular, confirm that the listing is the current console edition for your hardware rather than a legacy, bundle or streaming listing.
Online-service requirements

The subscription requirement is separate from buying the game. A player can own Rust Console Edition but still be unable to join online servers if the platform’s required online membership is missing or inactive.
Does Rust support cross-platform progress or account transfer?
No. Double Eleven’s Rust Console Edition FAQ answers the transfer question directly: “No, cross platform progress transfer is not an option in Rust Console Edition.” That means an Xbox player cannot move a console character, blueprint progress or other account progression to PlayStation, and the reverse transfer is not available either.

Plan a platform change as a new start. Do not assume that skins, Rust Coins, blueprints, server history, statistics or other purchases will follow an Xbox-to-PlayStation move unless a current official announcement specifically says they do. The absence of a transfer option also means that joining a friend on the other console does not expose your original platform’s progression inside that friend’s account.
Cross-play and cross-progression are different features: cross-play lets two supported console platforms use the same server, while cross-progression would let one account carry its state between platforms. Rust Console Edition provides the former on eligible servers, not the latter.
How to choose the right Rust version
- List the platforms your group actually uses. If everyone is on PC, choose PC Rust. If everyone is on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, choose Rust Console Edition.
- Handle a mixed console group. If some friends use PS5 and others use Xbox Series X|S, buy Rust Console Edition on the relevant consoles and select a supported cross-play server together.
- Do not buy PC Rust for a console group. The PC purchase will not provide access to Xbox or PlayStation servers.
- Check the live regional store page. Confirm the platform, edition, release listing and any current subscription requirement before paying, because storefront names and policies can change.
- Check the server listing before committing to a wipe. Make sure the selected console server is identified as cross-play if players are joining from both Xbox and PlayStation.
Rust Console Edition is digital-only. Double Eleven’s FAQ states that there are no physical copies available for the current console edition, so a disc listing should not be treated as an official requirement or proof of compatibility.

“I own Rust on PC and my friend has an Xbox. Can I join them?”
No. You would need to play on the same product. Your friend uses Rust Console Edition, while your PC copy belongs to the separate PC server universe.

Both of you need Rust Console Edition for your respective consoles, and you must choose a server with console cross-play enabled. Buying PC Rust would place you in a different multiplayer environment.

“Can I use my Xbox character on PS5?”
No. Rust Console Edition does not offer Xbox-to-PlayStation or PlayStation-to-Xbox progress transfer. The PS5 account will not inherit the Xbox character’s progression.
“Why can’t I see the server my friend is playing on?”
Check the edition first: PC and console servers never mix. If both players are on consoles, verify that the server supports cross-play, that both are searching the same region and server category, and that the server has not reached its player limit or changed status.
“Will a future update automatically add PC-console cross-play?”
There is no established PC-console connection in the stated product design. Double Eleven’s explanation of separate console and PC universes, together with the cross-play announcement specifically referring to console servers, means you should not assume that a console cross-play update includes PC players.
What to verify before you buy or switch platforms
- Hardware: the current console edition is listed for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
- Edition: PC Rust and Rust Console Edition are separate purchases and services.
- Friends’ platforms: PC players need PC friends; PS5 and Xbox players can meet on eligible console cross-play servers.
- Server type: cross-play must be supported by the specific console server.
- Online access: Xbox requires its console online-multiplayer subscription, and PlayStation requires PlayStation Plus for online play.
- Progress expectations: Xbox and PlayStation progression does not transfer.
- Format: the current console edition is digital-only according to Double Eleven’s FAQ.

Choose the edition that matches the people you intend to play with. Console cross-play solves the Xbox-versus-PlayStation split on supported servers; it does not connect either console to PC Rust or carry your progress between console accounts.
