No. RuneScape: Dragonwilds is a paid standalone survival game, not a free-to-play title. The normal model is a one-time purchase for the base game. Some console players can instead access it through an eligible Xbox Game Pass or PlayStation Plus subscription, but that is subscription-included access—not universal free play.
Jagex’s announced 1.0 price is £24.99 in the UK or US$29.99 in the United States. Your store may show a different, localized amount. The sections below separate the purchase price, subscription routes, editions, account requirements and platform-specific limits.
What “free to play” means for Dragonwilds
A free-to-play game lets anyone download its core experience without buying the game, usually funding development through optional purchases, a recurring subscription or both. Dragonwilds does not use that model. Jagex’s legal terms describe a one-off payment for access to the base game, and the Steam catalog lists paid Standard and Deluxe editions.
You therefore need either a purchase or an eligible platform subscription that includes the game. A subscription can remove the need to buy a separate copy while it remains included in the catalog, but it does not change the game into a permanently free title. If the subscription ends or the catalog entitlement changes, access can end unless you buy the game.

How much does RuneScape: Dragonwilds cost?
Jagex said the 1.0 launch price would not increase from the Early Access price. Its stated UK and US prices are £24.99 and US$29.99 respectively. Those figures are publisher-announced reference prices, not a guarantee of the amount shown in every country.
| Edition or route | What is established | What to check before paying |
|---|---|---|
| PC Standard Edition | Paid base game; Jagex’s announced 1.0 price is £24.99 or US$29.99. | Steam localizes currency and may display a different regional amount. |
| PC Deluxe Edition | Steam lists a paid Deluxe Edition. | The exact price depends on your region and the live store listing. |
| Xbox Series X|S | Announced for Xbox Game Pass at the 1.0 launch. | Confirm that your active Game Pass tier and local catalog still include the game. |
| PlayStation 5 | Announced for PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium subscribers. | Confirm catalog availability and that your subscription is active. |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Jagex announced a Digital Standard Edition. | The cited announcement does not give a regional eShop price. |
| Physical console copy | Physical Standard and Deluxe editions for PS5 and Xbox Series X were announced for Q4 2026. | Retail listing, price and stock were not confirmed by that announcement. |
Taxes, currency conversion, local pricing policies and temporary promotions can change the checkout total. Treat £24.99 and US$29.99 as Jagex’s stated UK and US launch prices, then verify the amount shown by the store serving your account.
Which platforms can you use without buying a separate copy?
Xbox Series X|S: Game Pass access
Jagex announced day-one Xbox Game Pass access for the 1.0 release. On a supported Xbox console, an eligible active Game Pass subscription can provide access while the game remains covered by the service’s catalog terms. This is an entitlement attached to the subscription and account, not a permanent license you keep after canceling.

PlayStation 5: PlayStation Plus Extra or Premium
The launch announcement also placed Dragonwilds in the PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium catalogs on PS5. You need the appropriate active tier, a supported account and catalog availability in your market. A lower PlayStation Plus tier does not automatically provide the Extra/Premium catalog entitlement.
PC: Steam or Jagex Launcher
On PC, the usual choice is a direct purchase through Steam or through the Jagex Launcher. Jagex Support treats those as separate installations. Buying the Steam version does not grant ownership of the Jagex Launcher version, and buying through the launcher does not unlock the Steam install. Choose the storefront you actually intend to use before completing the transaction.
Nintendo Switch 2
Jagex announced a Digital Standard Edition for Nintendo Switch 2. The announcement does not establish a universal price, so use the local Nintendo eShop listing for your account region. Do not assume that a PC, Xbox or PlayStation purchase transfers to Switch 2 unless Jagex and the relevant storefront explicitly state a cross-buy arrangement.
Do you need RuneScape membership?
No. Dragonwilds is not gated behind a RuneScape membership. Jagex’s Dragonwilds terms describe a one-off purchase model and state that no subscription or regular in-game transaction is required to access the game’s content.
The same terms leave room for optional premium features or downloadable content to require additional one-off payments. That clause means future add-ons may cost extra; it does not create a recurring membership requirement for the base game. It also does not promise that every future feature will be included in the initial purchase.
PC account, online and installation requirements
The Steam listing identifies Epic Online Services as a third-party account requirement. Jagex’s legal terms make the practical distinction clearer: an Epic Games account is required for online play, but not for offline play. You may therefore encounter an account setup step when using online features even though an Epic account is not required to launch an offline session.

- Pick the storefront. Decide between Steam and the Jagex Launcher; their installs and entitlements are separate.
- Buy or claim access through that storefront. A Steam purchase applies to Steam, while a Jagex Launcher purchase applies to the launcher installation.
- Install the matching client. Installing the other client will not transfer the purchase automatically.
- Prepare online credentials. If you plan to use online play, create or sign in to the Epic Games account requested by the service.
- Check the platform requirements. Compare your PC with the current support specifications before downloading the 25 GB installation.
Current PC requirements
Jagex Support currently lists the following Windows specifications. Support documentation can change as updates arrive, so check the live support page if your hardware is close to the minimum.
| Component | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | 64-bit Windows 10 | 64-bit Windows 10 |
| Processor | Intel Core i3-8100 or AMD Ryzen 5 1600 | Intel Core i5-10600 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600 |
| Memory | 8 GB RAM | 16 GB RAM |
| Graphics | NVIDIA GTX 1060 6 GB, AMD Radeon RX 5600XT or Intel Arc A750 8 GB | NVIDIA RTX 2070 6 GB or AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT 8 GB |
| Graphics API | DirectX 12 | DirectX 12 |
| Storage | 25 GB available | 25 GB available |
| Internet | Not separately stated for the minimum specification | Broadband internet |
Meeting the minimum specification is not a guarantee of a particular frame rate or image-quality setting. The recommended specification is the more useful baseline if you want additional performance headroom for a multiplayer survival session.

Jagex also said it would continue monthly updates and that planned updates, including the named Luminance update, would be free. “Free updates” describes post-purchase content supplied under that update plan; it does not mean the initial game purchase is waived. The terms still allow separately priced premium features or downloadable content.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Physical editions: what is and is not confirmed
Jagex announced physical Standard and Deluxe editions for PS5 and Xbox Series X in Q4 2026. That is a release plan, not confirmation that a particular retailer has stock today. The announcement does not establish a universal retail price, a specific store, or physical availability for every console variant.
If you want a disc copy, check the retailer and region connected to your console before assuming the announced edition is orderable. Digital catalog access and physical inventory are separate questions: a game can be in a subscription catalog while a boxed edition is unavailable, or vice versa.

- Already subscribe to Xbox Game Pass? Check the Xbox catalog on your Series X|S. If Dragonwilds is included in your active tier, downloading through the subscription avoids a separate purchase for as long as the entitlement lasts.
- Already subscribe to PlayStation Plus Extra or Premium? Check the PS5 catalog in your country. Catalog inclusion and tier eligibility must both be present.
- Prefer permanent access? Buy the edition for the platform you will keep using. A purchase is not dependent on a continuing Game Pass or PlayStation Plus subscription.
- Playing on PC? Select Steam or the Jagex Launcher first, then buy and install that same version. Do not purchase on one storefront expecting the other installation to unlock.
- Considering Switch 2? Wait for the local eShop listing to show the regional price and edition details rather than converting the UK or US figures yourself.
Common access mistakes and fixes
- Calling it free-to-play because it is in a subscription catalog: Treat Game Pass and PlayStation Plus access as conditional subscription benefits. Buy the game if you need access independent of that subscription.
- Assuming RuneScape membership carries over: Dragonwilds uses its own purchase and access terms. A RuneScape membership is not listed as a requirement.
- Buying on the wrong PC storefront: Steam and Jagex Launcher purchases are not interchangeable. Use the client associated with the transaction.
- Expecting every update to be paid or every add-on to be free: Jagex has described monthly free updates while reserving the option to charge separately for premium features or DLC.
- Assuming a physical announcement means stock is available: Q4 2026 physical editions were announced, but the announcement does not verify live inventory or retailer pricing.
- Using the wrong console subscription tier: The announced PlayStation route is Extra or Premium, and Xbox access depends on an eligible active Game Pass plan.
Bottom line
RuneScape: Dragonwilds is a paid game with a one-time base-game purchase, not a free-to-play release. Jagex’s announced 1.0 reference price is £24.99 or US$29.99, while Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus Extra/Premium can provide subscription-based access on supported consoles. You do not need RuneScape membership, but PC buyers must choose between separate Steam and Jagex Launcher installs, and online play requires an Epic Games account.
