RLCraft is a modpack, not one standalone Minecraft mod. The official CurseForge project is listed as a modpack by Shivaxi. Its canonical release, RLCraft 1.12.2 v2.9.3, combines a large set of Forge mods with coordinated configuration changes and custom scripts that alter vanilla behavior.
That distinction determines how you install it, how you update it, what files a server needs, and why downloading one component cannot reproduce the complete RLCraft experience.

What is RLCraft actually?
RLCraft is a preconfigured Minecraft survival and adventure pack built around a deliberately difficult, semi-realistic play style. Shivaxi describes it as a challenge focused on survival, RPG elements and adventure-like exploration. Instead of adding one isolated feature, the project changes many parts of the game at once: progression, combat, creatures, world exploration, equipment, environmental threats and other survival systems.
The project is distributed as a complete profile through CurseForge. That profile identifies the Minecraft version, Forge loader, included mods, configuration files, scripts and other files needed to make the components work together. In other words, “RLCraft” refers to the integrated collection and its settings, not to a single file that you drop into a vanilla mods folder.

Is RLCraft one mod?
No. Individual pieces inside the pack are mods, but RLCraft itself is the pack that assembles and configures them. For example, components such as RLMixins or Lycanites Mobs are separate mods with their own functions and files. Installing one of those does not install RLCraft, because the pack’s gameplay also depends on many other mods, shared dependencies, configuration values and scripts.
Shivaxi explains that he hand-selected many mods, adjusted each one for the intended play style, made them work together and added custom scripts for changes to vanilla behavior. Those integration decisions are as important to the identity of RLCraft as the individual mods. Removing or replacing a component can therefore produce a different game, even if it still launches.
Mod versus modpack: the practical difference
The terms describe different units of software and different installation workflows.

This is why searching for “the RLCraft mod” can lead to confusion. There is no single jar that represents the complete project. A file with RLCraft in its name may be a component, a script-related file or part of a distribution, rather than the whole pack.

How many mods does RLCraft contain?
The RLCraft Wiki describes approximately 185 mods in the pack, or about 186 when OptiFine is counted. The exact count can vary with the release and with whether optional or bundled components are included in the tally, so treat those numbers as an approximate inventory rather than a permanent specification.
The important point is not the precise count but the integration. RLCraft’s difficulty and progression emerge from the interaction of the included systems. A creature mod, a skill or leveling system, a world-generation change and a combat adjustment can all affect one another through configuration and scripts. Copying a few recognizable mods from the list will not recreate the pack’s rules.

Which Minecraft version is the official RLCraft release?
The canonical files page lists RLCraft 1.12.2 v2.9.3, released on June 27, 2023. That release targets Minecraft 1.12.2 and uses Forge. Older files for Minecraft 1.11.2 are also listed, but they are separate releases and should not be mixed with the 1.12.2 profile.

Always check the release shown in the project profile before installing add-ons, troubleshooting a crash or joining a server. A mod built for another Minecraft version, another Forge build or another RLCraft release may fail to load even when its name appears compatible.

How to install RLCraft on a computer
The supported approach is to install the complete client profile through the CurseForge launcher rather than assembling files manually.
- Use Minecraft: Java Edition. RLCraft is a Forge-based Java modpack. Make sure the Minecraft account you use in the launcher owns the Java Edition.
- Install the CurseForge launcher. Use the launcher resource linked from the official RLCraft project page. Keep the launcher and Minecraft installation on a drive with enough free space for the profile and its generated world files.
- Find the project by its creator and version. Search for RLCraft by Shivaxi and select the 1.12.2 v2.9.3 profile if you want the canonical release. Do not substitute an unrelated pack with a similar name.
- Create or install the profile. Let CurseForge obtain the required Forge loader, mods and configuration files. Avoid manually copying individual jars into a different profile while the installation is in progress.
- Launch from the RLCraft profile. Start the game using the profile created by CurseForge, not a plain vanilla installation. The first launch can take longer while Forge builds caches and the pack creates its directories.
- Test a new world before adding anything. Confirm that the title screen, menus and world creation work in an unmodified profile. If you later add a mod, record the change so you can remove it when diagnosing a crash.
Launcher labels can change between CurseForge versions, but the principle is stable: install the named modpack profile and launch that profile. A manual installation that contains only a few RLCraft-related mods is not an RLCraft installation.

Servers should use the separate RLCraft Server Pack for the same RLCraft release as the clients. The server pack is supplied specifically for server distribution and avoids the common mistake of copying a client profile wholesale into a server directory.
- Choose the matching release. If players use RLCraft 1.12.2 v2.9.3, download the server pack identified for that release. Do not combine a 1.11.2 server with 1.12.2 clients.
- Extract the server pack to a dedicated folder. Keep the server files separate from ordinary vanilla worlds and from other modpacks.
- Follow the included startup instructions. Use the supplied script or command structure and accept Minecraft’s EULA when prompted, in accordance with the server files’ instructions.
- Set an appropriate memory limit. The server’s Java launch settings should leave memory for the operating system and other services; assigning every available gigabyte can make stability worse.
- Start once, then review the logs. A first run creates configuration and world directories. Stop the server cleanly before editing settings or installing approved additions.
- Have every player install the identical client release. Matching the Minecraft version, Forge build, RLCraft version and mod list prevents most handshake and missing-mod errors.
How much RAM does RLCraft need?
Do not treat one memory number as a universal RLCraft requirement. A related listing for RLCraft Dregora recommends 6–8 GB of RAM for a client and 8 GB for a server. That guidance is specific to Dregora and should not be presented as a formal requirement for every RLCraft installation.

For your own setup, use the launcher’s memory settings as a starting point, watch actual usage while exploring and leave headroom for the operating system. Large view distances, high-resolution resource packs, shaders, multiplayer worlds and additional mods can increase memory pressure. If the game crashes with an out-of-memory message, lower those optional settings before assuming that the pack itself is defective.
Common mistakes when people call RLCraft a mod
Installing one jar and expecting the full pack
A single component cannot provide RLCraft’s complete rules, world settings or dependencies. Install the profile instead of hunting for a “main RLCraft mod.”
Using the wrong Minecraft version
RLCraft 1.12.2 files are not interchangeable with older 1.11.2 files. Check the profile and server release before downloading add-ons or reporting a compatibility problem.
Launching vanilla Minecraft
If the game opens without the RLCraft profile, none of the pack’s mods will be active. Select the CurseForge-created profile each time you play.

RLCraft already contains a tightly configured collection. An extra mod can introduce conflicts, duplicate functions or a mismatch with the pack’s scripts. Test additions one at a time and keep a backup of the working profile.
Why the classification matters
Calling RLCraft a modpack gives you the right expectations. You install it through a pack-oriented launcher, select a complete versioned profile, and treat updates as coordinated releases. You also know to look for a dedicated server pack rather than copying a random collection of client files.
Calling it a single mod suggests the wrong workflow: download one file, place it in a vanilla folder and expect every system to appear. That approach can produce missing dependencies, startup crashes or a game that launches but does not resemble RLCraft. The accurate short answer is therefore simple: RLCraft is a Forge modpack made from many individually configured mods, scripts and settings.
