Yes—Risk of Rain 2 is worth buying if you enjoy replayable action runs, experimenting with item combinations, and adapting to randomized challenges. The base game is the sensible place to start: it contains the core experience and supports solo play and co-op. Treat expansions as optional additions, not prerequisites. Among the reviewed DLC, Survivors of the Void has the strongest combination of substantial additions and positive Steam reception; Seekers of the Storm has a Mixed all-time Steam rating. Console buyers should also consider that future content is planned for newer consoles, not PS4, Xbox One, or Nintendo Switch.
What you get in the base game
Risk of Rain 2 is a third-person action roguelike built around repeated runs rather than a fixed, linear campaign. Steam describes more than a dozen handcrafted locales, randomized stages, enemies and items, survivor-specific combat styles, and a scaling system in which both players and foes grow stronger over time. The appeal is learning how those systems interact and adapting to what a run gives you.

The base game supports solo play and online co-op. The PlayStation listing describes online co-op with up to three friends. This makes it a stronger fit for players who like replaying and experimenting than for someone mainly seeking a scripted story campaign. That fit assessment follows the official descriptions; it is not a claim based on hands-on testing.
Should you buy the base game or an expansion?
Start with the base game if you have not played before. It provides the central run structure, survivor roster, stages, items, and solo/co-op play. Expansions add more variety to that foundation, including survivors, enemies, stages, items, and other content. You need the base game to use the expansions.

Operator and Drifter, seven stages and a variant, drones, items, enemies, and an alternate ending. | Steam 2026 access snapshot: 93% positive from 2,890 English reviews; 70% positive from 37 recent reviews. |
| Hallowed Concepts Released October 8, 2026 |
Acolyte and Enforcer, regions and trials, enemies, Hexes, Hallowed Items, and the N’tormat. | Steam 2026 access snapshot: 83% positive from 750 reviews, only three days after release. |
Steam user-review percentages are changing snapshots from Steam customers, not critic scores or guarantees of quality. Recent-review samples are small, and the Hallowed Concepts score is especially preliminary because it launched on October 8, 2026. They also do not establish how a console version performs.
Which DLC should you consider first?
Among the four expansions reviewed, Survivors of the Void is the best-supported first DLC consideration: its official listing describes meaningful additions, and its all-time and recent Steam review snapshots were positive. Alloyed Collective also had a strong all-time Steam snapshot, though its recent sample was smaller and more mixed. Seekers of the Storm merits extra caution because its all-time English Steam score was Mixed, despite a more positive recent sample of 25 reviews. Hallowed Concepts is too new for its early score to represent settled consensus.

DLC ownership is shared only in part. Steam listings for Survivors of the Void, Alloyed Collective, and Hallowed Concepts say that one owner can enable some expansion content—such as monsters, stages, or items—for the whole lobby. Players who do not own an expansion cannot select its new survivors or permanently unlock its content. Nintendo gives similar guidance for the expansions included in its bundle: an owner can enable monsters, levels, and items, while non-owners cannot select DLC survivors or permanently unlock DLC content.

Steam and Epic Games Store
Gearbox support says crossplay between Steam and Epic is optional. Players must have matching crossplay preferences, and changing the setting requires restarting the game. This does not establish universal crossplay between PC and consoles.

PS4, Xbox One, and future updates
In a 2K Support notice published January 28, 2026, and updated October 8, 2026, the Risk of Rain team said: “We made the difficult decision that we will no longer release future Risk of Rain 2 content on XBOX One, PlayStation 4 or Nintendo Switch (aka ‘Gen 8 consoles’).” The notice says future content will focus on PC, Xbox Series S/X, and PS5.
At the time of the October 8 notice, cross-generation co-op was still possible between PS4 and PS5 and between Xbox One and Xbox Series. The notice says that support will end after the next PlayStation and Xbox update. It also says PS4 and Xbox One owners who upgrade to the corresponding newer console will receive that version and previously purchased DLC at no additional cost. Because the end of cross-generation play depends on a future update, check the current 2K notice before choosing a console with friends.

Prices and bundle contents depend on region, storefront, and current promotions, so compare the live listing for your platform rather than relying on an old price. In the reviewed snapshot, selected Steam DLC promotions were due to end October 22, 2026. The US PlayStation store showed a five-item bundle containing the base game and all four expansions for $38.49, discounted from $69.99, with an offer end date of October 22, 2026. Those were time-limited listings, not evergreen prices.
