Hallowed Concepts is most worth buying if you already enjoy replaying Risk of Rain 2 and want new survivors, stages, Trials, and a system that trades risk for power. It is less compelling if you mainly want the October 8 free update or would rather wait for more than a first-day reception snapshot. The DLC requires the base game.
What Hallowed Concepts adds
The expansion centers on new ways to play and on taking risks in exchange for power. Its paid content includes:
- Two survivors: Enforcer, unlocked by default, and unlockable Acolyte.
- New stages and challenges: three standard stages and several Trial stages, with Trials built around endurance, hunting, and racing against time.
- New threats: three enemies, three bosses, and a new elite type.
- New items and abilities: 14 Hexes, 11 Hallowed items, three standard items, and the N’tormat Curio, whose collected pages grant abilities at a cost.
- New interactions and extras: six interactables, including the Wake stage event, plus unlockable survivor skins and new music by DLC3 composer Stavros Markonis, with a track by Nando Garza.
How the new survivors play
The Steam listing presents Enforcer as a defensive vanguard with tactical movement. Acolyte uses close-range glaive attacks and ranged strikes while bargaining with her life force. These are distinct approaches to a run, rather than simply extra cosmetic options.

How the risk-and-reward systems fit
Hexes are costs tied to Hallowed items, while pages from the N’tormat Curio grant powerful abilities with tradeoffs. Together with the Trials, they give the expansion a challenge-and-reward hook: power comes with added risk, rather than only through straightforward upgrades. The exact appeal depends on whether you enjoy that kind of pressure during repeated runs.

Do your friends need to own the DLC?
On Steam, one player owning Hallowed Concepts lets its monsters, levels, and items appear in the lobby for everyone. A player without the DLC cannot select its new survivors or permanently unlock its items, logbooks, or other content. That means a group can sample shared encounters with one owner, but each player who wants the full survivor and unlock progression needs their own copy. Check the rules for your specific non-Steam platform before relying on the Steam arrangement. Steam’s Hallowed Concepts listing describes the lobby rule.
What is free, and what is part of the DLC?
The October 8, 2026 update also adds unlockable skills for Commando, Huntress, Acrid, Artificer, Engineer, and REX, as well as an optional Karma system that can make the final moon confrontation more challenging. Official notes classify these changes as affecting the base game or prior DLC, separate from Hallowed Concepts. They should not be counted as paid expansion value. The update also includes balance changes and bug fixes across the base game and earlier DLC; that does not independently establish launch stability. See the October 8, 2026 patch notes for the update breakdown.

How strong is the early reception?
On October 9, 2026, Steam showed 90% positive from 371 user reviews and classified Hallowed Concepts’ overall reviews as “Very Positive.” That is a live figure from roughly one day after launch, so it is an initial signal rather than a mature verdict. It does not establish long-term balance, console performance, or how players who have not reviewed the DLC feel about it.
