No. The PlayStation Vita and PlayStation Portable (PSP) are separate Sony handheld consoles, with different hardware, game formats, and libraries. A Vita can play some PSP games in digital form, but it cannot read PSP UMD discs, and Sony says some PSP titles are incompatible.
How are the PSP and PS Vita different?
The PSP is Sony’s earlier handheld platform. The PS Vita is a later, separate system—not a PSP model or a renamed version. Each has its own hardware specifications and physical game format.
| Feature | PSP | PS Vita |
|---|---|---|
| Screen | Launch-era PSP: 4.3-inch, 480 × 272 TFT LCD, according to Sony’s 2004 specifications. | PCH-1000: 5-inch, 960 × 544 OLED, according to Sony’s 2012 launch specification. PCH-2000: 5-inch, 960 × 544 LCD, according to Sony’s 2013 specification. |
| Analog controls | One analog pad. | Two analog sticks. |
| Additional input | Physical buttons. | Capacitive front touch screen and rear touch pad; Sony’s launch specification also lists motion sensors and cameras. |
| Physical game format | UMD discs. Sony’s specification lists UMD game, audio, and video profiles. | PlayStation Vita cards. No UMD drive. |
| Memory specification | 32 MB main memory, per Sony’s 2004 specification. | 512 MB main memory and 128 MB VRAM, per Sony’s 2012 launch specification. |
These figures identify specific generations and models; they do not describe every revision as having the same screen. In particular, the PCH-2000 Vita uses an LCD rather than the OLED panel in the PCH-1000.
Can a PS Vita play PSP games?
Yes, it can play some PSP software distributed digitally, but compatibility is not universal. Sony’s Vita User’s Guide says that some PSP game titles are not compatible. It also notes that some titles cannot be copied from a PS3 or downloaded using the Vita.

Check Sony’s supported-title information for the exact game before buying or relying on a transfer. A game’s being available for PSP does not by itself mean it will run on a Vita or be accessible for download now.
There is also a display difference: PSP games were designed for the PSP’s lower-resolution screen, so Sony warns that their graphics may look rough on the Vita’s higher-resolution display.

Will a PS Vita play PSP UMD discs?
No. The Vita has no UMD drive, and Sony’s 2012 FAQ states that “PS Vita does not support UMD discs.” The FAQ described obtaining a digital version from the PlayStation Store as an alternative for a supported title, but that historical guidance does not guarantee that a specific game can be purchased or downloaded today.
If you own PSP games on UMD, a PSP is the straightforward choice for playing that physical collection. A Vita is not a universal replacement for a UMD-equipped PSP.

What should you check before choosing one?
- Identify the game format. A PSP UMD requires a PSP. A digital PSP game needs to be supported on Vita and accessible through the relevant account or download route. A Vita card is for a Vita game.
- Check the exact PSP title. Consult Sony’s compatibility information rather than assuming all PSP software works on Vita.
- Consider the games you want to play. Choose a Vita if you want Vita-native titles or supported digital PSP games; choose a PSP if UMD playback is essential.
- Compare controls and screen by model. The Vita adds a second analog stick and touch controls. Check whether a Vita is PCH-1000 or PCH-2000 if the screen panel matters to you.
- Check access and the condition of the individual device. Existing digital purchases and online features can depend on the title and service availability. For a used console, inspect the specific unit’s condition rather than assuming its battery or other components are healthy.
What is the PlayStation Store status?
Store access is time-sensitive and can vary by region. As of PlayStation’s US support notice, checked October 8, 2026, new purchases from the PS Vita Store are scheduled to end in July 2027. Sony says previously owned content can continue to be played, subject to each game’s existing online features and service availability. Check the notice for the region that applies to you, since service policies can change.
Sony’s PSP notice says previously purchased PSP content can still be downloaded to a PSP through its Download List. It also says PSP titles still available on the PS3 and PS Vita stores may be bought and played there, while in-game store purchases for PSP content ended in July 2021. These points do not mean every PSP title is currently for sale or every online service remains active.
