No. Do not assume Polymarket Gamma API’s endDate is when a market finally resolves. Polymarket says the market’s written rules define its resolution, and a bounded sample of markets found that endDate corresponded to different scheduled moments in different market types. Check the market rules and its current state before relying on the timestamp.
What does endDate tell you?
Gamma API provides market- and event-level records. Its documented example includes fields such as endDate, description, active, closed, and acceptingOrders. The timestamp is useful metadata, but its name alone does not establish that it is a final resolution deadline or a trading cutoff. Polymarket Institute’s API overview shows an example market record with an endDate; that example does not define one universal meaning for the field.
Polymarket’s guidance is explicit: “The market title describes the market, but the rules define how it should be resolved.” The market-specific rules identify the resolution source, the market end date, and relevant edge cases. Read Polymarket’s explanation of market clarification rather than inferring the deadline from a title or timestamp.

Why the meaning can vary by market

These are observations from OrcaLayer’s hand-picked sample, not platform-wide rates, a guarantee for those sports, or a rule for every market. How to find the deadline and check whether trading is open
- Find the specific market record. Use the relevant Gamma API market or event record; Gamma supports listing active markets and retrieving a market or event by ID. Confirm that the record corresponds to the exact market you intend to check.
- Read the market’s rules in
description. Look for the event or condition that determines the outcome, the named resolution source, the applicable end date, and any postponement or exception provisions. Treat this written rule—not the field name—as the basis for the resolution deadline. - Use
endDateas a clue, not a conclusion. Compare its timestamp with the schedule and the wording of the market rules. If they do not clearly agree, do not infer a deadline from the timestamp alone. - Re-fetch the record to check current trading state. Inspect current fields such as
closedandacceptingOrdersrather than using an old snapshot. Those fields are present in Polymarket’s documented example; OrcaLayer’s analysis describes them as practical indicators of current closure and order acceptance.
Is market closure the same as final resolution?
No. A market can stop accepting orders before its outcome is formally resolved. Polymarket’s resolution guidance describes an outcome proposal followed by a two-hour challenge period before final resolution. The challenge period is part of the documented resolution process, not a reason to treat endDate as the final resolution time. Polymarket explains its proposal and challenge process.

- For what outcome qualifies: use the market’s written rules and their named resolution source.
- For a scheduled timestamp: consult
endDate, then verify what the specific market’s rules say it represents. - For whether orders are currently accepted: check freshly retrieved state fields such as
closedandacceptingOrders. - For final resolution: distinguish market closure from the proposal and challenge process described by Polymarket.
