No. Pokémon Heart & Soul is a fan-made Game Boy Advance ROM hack, not an official Pokémon retail release. Its developers describe it as an open-source Johto project built with Modern Emerald and pokeemerald-expansion, while the official Pokémon site lists Pokémon HeartGold and Pokémon SoulSilver as separate Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi games.
Heart & Soul is distributed as a UPS patch. To play it, you supply your own legally obtained Pokémon Emerald Version (U) ROM and apply the patch with compatible software. The project does not supply the underlying Emerald ROM.
What Pokémon Heart & Soul actually is
Pokémon Heart & Soul is a fan project that reworks Pokémon Emerald into a Johto-focused adventure for Game Boy Advance emulation. The project documentation calls it an open-source ROM hack built on Modern Emerald and pokeemerald-expansion. It draws on the Johto setting and ideas associated with earlier Pokémon games, but its code, content choices and feature set belong to the fan project rather than to an official Nintendo release.
That distinction matters for expectations. Heart & Soul is not a cartridge sold through Nintendo, The Pokémon Company or an authorized retail channel. It has no official Pokémon product listing, release campaign or support commitment from those companies. Describing it as “the GBA version of HeartGold” or an official remake would be inaccurate; it is an independently developed interpretation that uses Pokémon source material and a fan-built implementation.

The project’s own README describes it as playtested, but that is a statement from the project itself, not an independent laboratory result or a guarantee that every feature works identically on every emulator, device or build.
Heart & Soul versus HeartGold and SoulSilver
The names are easy to confuse because both refer to Johto. They are different products with different publishers, hardware targets and distribution methods.

If you want the official Nintendo DS experience, look for HeartGold or SoulSilver. If you want a fan-created GBA project with altered systems and a Johto setting, Heart & Soul is the relevant category.

What is the current release?
The project homepage identifies version 2.0.4, released on August 28, 2026. Guides written for an earlier 1.x or 2.0 build may describe different mechanics, menus or save behavior. Check the project’s release page and documentation for the exact version before applying a patch or importing a save.

The 2.0.4 notes describe a rebuilt GBA Johto experience with a Kanto postgame. They also call out randomizer pool selection, an adjustable experience-point multiplier, badge-scaled trainer rematches and bug fixes. These are project claims; they should not be read as independent test results or as proof that every emulator exposes every option in the same way.
Features the project documents
Heart & Soul’s feature page lists systems that go beyond an unmodified Pokémon Emerald ROM. Availability can change between releases, so use the documentation for the build you intend to play.
- Johto campaign and Kanto postgame: The project presents its main adventure as a rebuilt Johto journey followed by postgame content in Kanto.
- Following Pokémon: Pokémon can accompany the player outside their Poké Ball in supported parts of the game.
- Day-and-night encounters: Encounter tables can vary by time of day, changing which Pokémon appear.
- Customization: The project advertises player customization options rather than limiting the experience to Emerald’s original presentation.
- Randomizer systems: Players can select randomizer pools instead of accepting one fixed randomization setup.
- Challenge systems: Additional rules and settings are available for players who want a more demanding run.
- Adjustable EXP multiplier: Version 2.0.4 documentation identifies a setting that changes experience gain. The project does not establish one universally correct multiplier.
- Badge-scaled trainer rematches: Rematch opponents can scale with badge progress, according to the release information.
- Modern learnsets and abilities: The feature page describes optional Generation 7 learnsets and abilities updated through Generation 9.
- Field HMs without teaching the move: The project describes a system that lets field actions work without permanently teaching an HM to a party member.
- Battle Frontier and Safari Zones: These locations are listed among the project’s optional or expanded systems.
“Optional” does not mean universal across every mode or future fork. A randomizer, challenge rule or compatibility fork may disable or alter a feature. Read the version-specific notes instead of assuming that a guide for another build applies unchanged.
What you need before installing it
A compatible base ROM
The release instructions require a legally obtained Pokémon - Emerald Version (U).gba ROM. The “(U)” designation indicates the United States-region base expected by the patch instructions. A different regional dump, a modified ROM, or an already patched file may fail validation or produce unpredictable behavior.

The UPS patch
Heart & Soul is delivered as a UPS patch, not as a complete commercial game file. The patch contains the project’s changes; it does not replace the need for the matching Emerald base. The project’s patch page provides the UPS file and does not provide the underlying Emerald ROM.
Patch software and an emulator
You need software that can apply a UPS patch and an emulator capable of running the resulting GBA file. The project lists mGBA for PC and Mac and mGBA-based setups for other platforms. Those are software recommendations, not a requirement to purchase a particular handheld, console or paid service. Confirm that your chosen emulator supports normal battery saves, save states and any multiplayer functions you plan to use.
Enough storage for separate files
Keep an untouched copy of the Emerald ROM, the original UPS patch and the newly created Heart & Soul file in separate folders. This makes it easier to retry a patch, compare versions or recover if a file is overwritten. Do not rename files until you have recorded which base and patch produced each output.
How to apply the patch
The exact button names vary by patching utility, but the order is the same. Use the project’s current release instructions if they specify a particular utility or checksum.

- Obtain your base legally. Create or use your own legally obtained Pokémon Emerald Version (U) ROM. The project does not authorize downloading an unauthorized copy from a ROM site.
- Download the matching release patch. Select the UPS patch for the version you intend to play, currently v2.0.4 according to the project homepage. Do not mix a 2.0.4 patch with instructions for an older release.
- Back up the base file. Copy the unmodified Emerald ROM to a safe location. Apply the patch to a duplicate, not to your only copy.
- Open a UPS-compatible patcher. Choose the UPS-patching function, then select the Emerald ROM as the source file and the Heart & Soul UPS file as the patch.
- Save a new output file. Give the patched ROM a clear name such as
Heart and Soul v2.0.4.gba. Do not overwrite the untouched base. - Start the output in your emulator. Load the new
.gbafile, not the original Emerald file. If the title screen or opening behavior still looks like unmodified Emerald, verify that you opened the patched output. - Create a fresh in-game save. Use the game’s normal save command before relying on save states. Keep a backup of the emulator’s save file after the first successful session.
A patcher may report a bad checksum or reject the file when the base is the wrong region, compressed, already modified or incomplete. Replace the base with an unmodified Emerald Version (U) dump and apply the patch again rather than forcing the operation.
Save compatibility and upgrading
The feature documentation states that saves made before version 2.0 are incompatible with v2.0.4. Treat a major-version upgrade as a new playthrough unless the project explicitly publishes a conversion tool. Copy your old save somewhere safe, but do not assume that renaming it or placing it beside the new ROM will make it load.
Save files are normally associated with the ROM name and emulator settings. If the game starts without your progress, check that the save uses the emulator’s supported format, that the file name matches the patched ROM and that you did not accidentally launch the base Emerald file. These checks cannot overcome the documented pre-2.0 incompatibility.
Multiplayer limits
Heart & Soul’s multiplayer support is intended for compatible Heart & Soul 2.0 or fork builds. The project specifically excludes official Pokémon games, Heart & Soul 1.x, Modern Emerald and unrelated pokeemerald-expansion projects from that compatibility promise.

That means two players should agree on the exact project build before connecting. A link cable or emulator networking feature that works for an official Pokémon title does not automatically make it work with this hack. Use matching ROM builds, matching emulator versions where required and separate backups of both players’ saves. If a connection fails, first verify the build number and fork, then consult that build’s multiplayer notes.
Common problems and practical fixes
The patcher says the file is invalid
- Confirm that the source is an unmodified Pokémon Emerald Version (U) ROM.
- Make sure you selected the UPS patch, not a ZIP archive or a different project file.
- Download the patch again if its size or checksum differs from the release page.
- Apply the patch to a duplicate and save the output as a new
.gbafile.
The game boots, but features are missing
- Check that the emulator loaded the patched output rather than the original Emerald ROM.
- Verify the version number shown by the project documentation; a guide for 1.x may describe systems absent from another build.
- Review whether the mode you selected disables randomizer, challenge or other optional systems.
My old save will not load
First determine whether it was created before version 2.0. The project states that such saves are incompatible with v2.0.4. If it was created on a compatible release, check the save format, ROM filename and emulator save directory before assuming the file is lost.
Multiplayer cannot connect
Verify that every participant is using a compatible Heart & Soul 2.0 or fork build. Official Pokémon games, Heart & Soul 1.x, Modern Emerald and unrelated pokeemerald-expansion projects are outside the compatibility described by the project.

The project’s instruction to use a legally obtained ROM is not a jurisdiction-specific legal opinion about copying, dumping or circumvention. Laws differ by country and may depend on how a backup was created. For that reason, this article does not tell you that any particular downloading or copying method is lawful in your location.
Do not download a prepatched ROM from an unknown site. Besides potential copyright issues, unofficial files can be mislabeled, modified, bundled with malware or based on the wrong Emerald region. The project supplies a patch; it does not establish that an unspecified prepatched cartridge or download is authentic or compatible.
Keep antivirus software current, scan unfamiliar utilities, and download patches only from the project’s own release channels. Never enter account credentials or payment details into a site merely because it claims to host Heart & Soul.
