Short answer: Planet Zoo is worth playing for achievement hunters who enjoy management simulations, animal care and long-term projects. It is a poor fit for anyone looking for a short, linear checklist. Steam lists 38 achievements, and the set reaches from immediate introductory actions to hard Career completion, repeated Franchise management, breeding, research and cumulative construction.
The demanding part is not a published hour count—no dependable current estimate is established—but the breadth of systems you must use. Your platform also matters: the Steam list and Frontier’s Console Edition list are separate references, so console players should verify the wording in their own trophy menu.
What Planet Zoo asks achievement hunters to do
Planet Zoo launched on PC on November 5, 2019, with Frontier Developments as developer and publisher. Steam identifies it as a single-player game with 38 achievements. Those achievements are not a collection of unrelated trick shots; they mirror the game’s core management loop and become progressively more demanding.

This mixture is the central answer to the value question. If you enjoy optimizing habitats, solving guest problems and watching a zoo develop, the achievements give those activities a clear long-term purpose. If you regard management tasks as filler between action-game objectives, several requirements will feel like chores.

How hard is full completion?
Hard Career tiers are the main skill check
The most intimidating Steam goals are the hard Career achievements. Steam currently displays separate achievements for completing Career on hard, earning silver on hard and earning gold on hard. Each has a 0.4% global unlock rate in the current listing. Those percentages show how uncommon the unlocks were among Steam players when recorded; they are not a difficulty rating, a failure probability or a completion-time estimate, and they can change as more people play.
Hard Career scenarios test whether you can maintain a functioning zoo while meeting scenario objectives and restrictions. The challenge is cumulative: animal welfare, finances, staff assignment, guest satisfaction, habitat design and research all interact. A player who only wants to follow a checklist may need to learn the simulation before the final tiers become realistic.
The list is demanding without being a pure precision challenge
Most goals do not require twitch reactions. Difficulty comes from planning, recovery and persistence. A poor enclosure can create welfare and guest problems; weak finances can delay the research or construction needed for a scenario; unmanaged breeding can leave you with overcrowded habitats. The achievement set therefore rewards players willing to pause, inspect reports and revise a plan.

Grind and difficulty are different
Opening 25 Franchise zoos, producing 73 babies and accumulating 10 km of barrier are volume objectives. They may take a long time even when each individual action is easy. Completing all hard Career tiers is a skill-and-management objective. A completionist should expect both kinds of work rather than assuming that mastering hard scenarios automatically finishes the rest.
How long does it take to reach 100%?
There is no dependable current cross-platform completion-time estimate in the available evidence, so quoting a number of hours would be false precision. The workload varies with your starting familiarity, whether you restart failed scenarios, how deliberately you pursue cumulative goals and which platform list applies.

Steam, console and PS5: which list applies?
Steam achievements
Steam’s listing contains 38 achievements and identifies the game as single-player. The visible goals include the introductory, Career, Franchise, animal, research and construction examples above. Steam’s global percentages are useful for showing that hard Career completion is uncommon, but they do not establish a universal difficulty score.

Frontier publishes a separate Console Edition achievement reference. It describes completing all original Career levels at Bronze, Silver and Gold, along with corresponding hard-difficulty variants. That wording is not a guarantee that every console trophy has the same name, trigger or scope as the PC achievement. Before planning a console run, open the trophy list for your edition and use its exact requirements.
PS5 modes and online play
The official PlayStation listing for the PS5 Console Edition describes Career, Franchise, Challenge and Sandbox modes. It says online play is optional and mentions shared console workshop content. This matters for achievement planning: you can choose a mode that suits a particular cumulative objective without assuming that online participation is mandatory. Optional online features do not remove the need to check the wording and conditions of an individual trophy.

A practical achievement roadmap
- Confirm your platform list. Record every achievement or trophy in the Steam, PlayStation or other console interface you will use. Pay special attention to whether Career medals and hard variants are separate goals.
- Use early Career play as training. Learn habitat welfare, staff management, guest needs, finances and research before attempting the hardest scenarios. Early introductory achievements should arrive naturally while you learn.
- Plan for hard Career tiers. Treat hard Bronze, hard Silver and hard Gold as distinct milestones. Keep a stable zoo design and financial routine rather than changing several systems at once when a scenario begins to fail.
- Create a Franchise plan. Because the list includes 25 Franchise zoos and a five-star education target, decide in advance which zoos will be built for education, which will support breeding and which will be quick openings for cumulative progress.
- Track animal objectives separately. Maintain welfare and population records for the 73-baby requirement and the release of 20 critically endangered animals. Do not assume that one successful breeding pair will satisfy every animal-related goal.
- Keep research and Zoopedia progress visible. Use the game’s research and species information systems deliberately. A checklist outside the game can prevent you from overlooking a species or research entry late in the run.
- Batch construction goals. Design barriers and transport routes with the 10 km barrier and 1 km tracked-ride objectives in mind. Build useful infrastructure rather than placing disposable pieces solely to increase a counter.
- Reserve cleanup saves. After Career and Franchise milestones, use a controlled zoo for any remaining breeding, education, ride or construction requirement. This avoids disrupting a successful scenario while you chase a cumulative target.
Goal-specific tactics and evidence limits
Career medals and hard variants
Read each medal requirement literally. A goal for completing a level is not necessarily the same as one for earning gold, and a normal-difficulty result does not satisfy a hard-difficulty variant. Keep notes on which levels and medal tiers are complete so that you do not replay the wrong scenario.
Twenty-five Franchise zoos
The count rewards openings, not merely one exceptionally large zoo. Build a repeatable template for essential staff, habitat setup and guest facilities, then adapt it to the animals and objectives of each new zoo. The achievement itself does not establish that every zoo must be a long-running showcase, so avoid spending effort that the requirement does not ask for.

Seventy-three babies and twenty critically endangered releases
These are different population-management tasks. Births require viable breeding populations and acceptable welfare; releases require animals that meet the game’s release conditions and the appropriate conservation category. Keep animals healthy and avoid overcrowding, because unmanaged population growth can create welfare problems that slow both goals.

Zoopedia completion
Completion of the Zoopedia favors breadth. Use research and species records as a tracking system, and check the in-game definition of a completed entry on your edition. Do not assume that owning an animal alone marks every associated information or research requirement complete.
Ten kilometres of barrier
A 2023 Steam community guide advises that barrier length can accrue across saves. That is player guidance, not a publisher guarantee, and the guide itself notes that achievement behavior and bugs have changed. Treat the advice as a planning option, then verify the counter in your current build before relying on it. Building barriers that serve real habitats is safer than creating an enormous unused perimeter that could complicate finances and guest flow.
One-kilometre tracked ride
The same community guide recommends pursuing the tracked-ride distance in a zoo mode where rides are available. Check your mode’s building options first, create a continuous route that the game recognizes as a ride and confirm progress in the achievement interface. Because community instructions may age as patches change behavior, use official support if the route appears valid but the achievement does not trigger.
Five-star education in Franchise
This requirement is mode-specific: a five-star education result elsewhere should not be assumed to count. Concentrate educational facilities, informative viewing opportunities and guest access in a stable Franchise zoo, then monitor the rating until the requirement is recorded.
Common pitfalls and how to avoid them
- Using the wrong platform checklist: PC and Console Edition references are separate. Confirm the exact trophy text before replaying a Career level.
- Treating unlock percentages as a time estimate: Steam’s 0.4% figures describe global unlock rates at a point in time, not the hours required by an individual player.
- Assuming every cumulative counter is universal: Some totals may depend on mode, save data or achievement implementation. Verify progress in your current edition rather than relying on an old guide.
- Following outdated bug advice: The community guide was last updated in 2023 and warns that behavior and bugs have changed. Use it for ideas, not as definitive troubleshooting.
- Leaving hard Career goals until the very end: They are the strongest skill check. Attempting them earlier gives you time to learn the systems and adjust your plan instead of discovering the gap after every other objective is complete.
- Ignoring mode names: A Franchise, Career, Challenge or Sandbox condition is part of the requirement. Read the mode qualifier before investing time in a otherwise successful save.

Planet Zoo earns a recommendation for achievement hunters who want their checklist to make them engage with a full management simulation. The 38-achievement Steam set has enough variety to prevent a single dominant strategy, while the hard Career tiers provide a genuine high-end target and the Franchise, breeding, Zoopedia and construction goals supply a long tail of progress.
Choose another game if your priority is a predictable completion time, a purely linear route or minimal repetition. No reliable current hour estimate exists, and the rarest hard Career achievements are only evidence of uncommon unlocks, not a promise that they require a specific number of hours. For everyone else, verify the platform list, plan cumulative work early and treat the zoo itself—not just the trophy pop-ups—as the project.
