A warm phone is usually not dangerous when it is charging or performing demanding work. It becomes a safety concern when the heat is unusual, continues after the activity stops, triggers a temperature warning or protective slowdown, or appears with battery-damage signs such as swelling, leakage, smoke, a chemical odor, odd noises, discoloration or physical damage. Stop using and charging a damaged device. If it smokes or burns, leave the area and call emergency services.
When phone heat is normal—and when it is not
Phones convert some electrical energy into heat. The processor, modem, display, camera system and battery can all warm up during intensive work. Apple lists initial setup, restoring a backup, software updates, wireless charging, camera use, demanding apps or games and high-quality video streaming as situations in which an iPhone or iPad may temporarily feel warm. Samsung and Google likewise identify charging and demanding use as common causes of warmth.
Context matters more than touch alone. A phone that warms while restoring a backup and cools afterward is a different case from one that is hot while idle on a desk. Heat is also harder to shed in direct sunlight, a parked car, a hot room, under bedding or inside a tight case. Navigation or video recording in sunlight combines heavy processing with a hot environment.

Do not use one temperature number as a universal battery-danger threshold. Temperature limits depend on the phone model, software, battery design and the way the manufacturer defines the measurement.

Four questions that separate routine warmth from a safety problem
What was the phone doing?
Charging, setup, restoring data, installing an update, gaming, recording video, video calling, navigation and high-resolution streaming can all produce temporary heat. Close or pause the demanding task and watch whether the temperature falls.
Is the environment adding heat?
Move the phone out of direct sun and away from a heater, dashboard or hot vehicle. Remove obstructions that prevent ventilation. A cool, shaded, ventilated location gives the device a chance to regulate itself.
Is the phone protecting itself?
A temperature warning is a clear instruction to stop and cool the device. Protective behavior can include pausing charging, dimming the display, closing apps, reducing performance or shutting down. These actions mean the phone has detected a condition outside its normal operating envelope; do not keep pushing it.
Are there signs of battery damage?
Swelling or bulging, leakage, an unusual chemical odor, hissing or other odd sounds, discoloration, physical damage and extreme heat are warning signs identified in government and fire-service guidance. They require a different response from ordinary warmth: stop using and charging the phone.

Temperature guidance is model-specific
Published limits illustrate why a single “danger temperature” is misleading. Apple’s current iPhone and iPad guidance specifies an ambient operating range of 0–35°C. A Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro Safety & Regulatory Guide warns against exposure above 45°C. These figures describe different manufacturers’ guidance and should not be substituted for your own model’s instructions or treated as internal battery thresholds.
| Guidance | What it applies to | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 0–35°C ambient use | Apple iPhone and iPad support guidance | Apple’s specified surrounding-temperature range; not a universal limit for every phone. |
| Above 45°C exposure warning | Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro Safety & Regulatory Guide | Specific to those models’ safety guidance; not an all-phone battery threshold. |
A phone that feels hot to your hand may still be within its maker’s operating conditions, while a device that is only moderately warm but swollen is unsafe. Use the warning message, behavior change and physical condition together rather than trying to estimate temperature by touch.
What to do when a phone is unusually hot
- Stop the demanding activity. End a game, camera recording, navigation session, update or other intensive task. If the screen is responsive, save work first only if doing so does not keep the device hot.
- Move it to a cooler place. Get it out of direct sunlight and away from a hot car or other heat source. Place it on a hard, open surface where air can circulate.
- Follow any on-screen temperature instruction. Apple advises switching the device off, moving it to a cooler environment away from direct sunlight and allowing it to cool. Other phones may display their own instructions.
- Stop charging while it cools. If the phone is connected and there are no battery-damage signs, disconnect the charger. Samsung advises closing apps, disconnecting the charger and waiting for the temperature to fall before charging again.
- Do not accelerate cooling recklessly. Do not puncture, squeeze, open, freeze or immerse the phone. A sudden temperature change or physical damage can create additional hazards.
- Reassess after it has cooled. Occasional warmth tied to a clear workload can be normal. Repeated heat during ordinary use, heat that persists after cooling or any physical warning sign warrants professional help.
Charging heat: check the accessory only when it fits the symptoms
Charging naturally produces some warmth, but a damaged or incompatible charger or cable can contribute to excessive heating. Samsung specifically identifies those accessories as possible causes. Once the phone is cool and shows no battery-damage signs, inspect the cable and charger for fraying, bent connectors, cracks, scorching or looseness. Check the phone maker’s compatibility guidance for your exact model before trying a replacement charging cable or manufacturer-approved charger.

Battery warning signs require immediate stopping
Stop using and charging the device if you notice any of the following:
- The back, screen or battery area is swelling, bulging or separating.
- Liquid is leaking from the phone or battery.
- There is a chemical or unusual odor.
- You hear hissing, popping or another unexplained sound.
- The phone or battery is discolored, crushed, punctured or otherwise physically damaged.
- Extreme heat occurs without a clear workload, or heat is accompanied by another sign above.
Do not puncture a swollen battery, attempt a repair, press the case back together or keep the device in service while waiting for a spare phone. Contact the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider for handling instructions. If there is no immediate fire threat, ask your local hazardous-waste or recycling authority how to transport and dispose of a damaged lithium-ion device; requirements vary by location.
What to do if the phone smokes or catches fire
Smoke or fire is an emergency, not a troubleshooting problem. Leave the area, get outside and call emergency services. In the United States, call 911; elsewhere use the local emergency number. Seattle Fire guidance advises closing the door while leaving if that can be done without delaying your escape. Do not pick up, carry, cover, puncture or otherwise handle a smoking or burning phone. Keep people and pets away and follow the fire dispatcher’s instructions.

Call emergency services
Call immediately when the device is smoking, burning or presents an imminent fire threat. Emergency guidance naming 911 is specific to the United States; readers elsewhere should use their local emergency number.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How protective behavior can look on different phones
Manufacturers implement thermal protection differently. Depending on the model, the phone may pause charging, dim the display, close apps, reduce performance or shut down. Apple says that an iPhone or iPad displaying no temperature warning may continue to be used; that statement is specific to Apple’s guidance and should not be generalized to every brand. A warning or protective action on any phone is a reason to stop demanding activity and cool it.
A shutdown by itself does not prove permanent damage. The important follow-up is whether the device cools normally and operates without repeated warnings. Persistent or unexplained recurrence moves the situation from routine heat to a support or repair issue.

Common situations and the safest response
| Situation | First response | Escalate when |
|---|---|---|
| Warm during setup, restore or a software update | Let the process finish if there is no warning, keep the phone shaded and ventilated, and pause demanding use. | A temperature warning appears, the phone shuts down repeatedly or it stays hot afterward. |
| Warm during gaming, camera use, streaming or navigation | Stop the activity, leave direct sun and allow cooling before resuming. | Heat occurs during light use or returns immediately after cooling. |
| Warm while charging | Disconnect the charger and let the device cool; inspect the accessory once safe. | The cable or charger is damaged, compatibility is uncertain, or abnormal heat recurs. |
| Hot while idle | Stop using and charging it, move it to a safe cool surface and check for swelling, odor, leakage, sounds or damage. | Any battery warning sign is present, or the heat does not subside. |
| Smoke or fire | Evacuate and call emergency services. | Always; do not handle the device. |
Preventing avoidable overheating
- Keep demanding sessions shorter in direct sun or a hot vehicle.
- Give the phone an open, ventilated surface during charging instead of covering it with bedding or clothing.
- Use charging equipment compatible with the exact phone model and replace visibly damaged cables or chargers.
- Install software updates under normal environmental conditions, not in a hot car or direct sun.
- Pay attention to a change from the phone’s normal behavior: new heat at idle, frequent warnings or a case that begins to separate.
These steps reduce heat load but cannot make a damaged battery safe. Physical damage and fire symptoms always take priority over troubleshooting.
Disposal of a damaged lithium-ion phone
Never put a lithium-ion battery or a device containing one in household trash. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and your local hazardous-waste or recycling authority’s procedure. Damaged batteries may require special handling and transport. If the device is an imminent fire threat, do not transport it yourself; leave and call emergency services.
Bottom line for a hot phone
Warmth during charging or heavy work is often temporary. Stop the workload and cool the phone when it becomes unusually hot, and obey any temperature warning or protective slowdown. Stop using and charging a phone with swelling, leakage, odor, odd sounds, discoloration, physical damage or extreme unexplained heat. Smoke or fire calls for evacuation and emergency services—not hands-on troubleshooting.
