Phone cloning is generally a reasonable way to move to a new phone when you use the manufacturer’s or operating system’s official transfer flow, review its permissions, and choose only the data you need. It is not a bit-for-bit copy, a guarantee that every item will transfer, or a way to clean a phone that may be infected.
What “phone clone” means—and what it does not
“Phone clone” can refer to different things. For most people moving to a new device, it means a migration tool such as Android’s built-in transfer flow or Samsung Smart Switch. These tools copy supported categories of data between devices; they do not necessarily duplicate every file, setting, app, or account credential.
Samsung says Smart Switch leaves content on both phones after a transfer, while Google lists categories that may not copy during Android setup. The phrase can also describe a separate security topic: a 2020 research paper examines an Android data-clone attack model involving certain manufacturers’ clone-app privileges. Access to the data you select
A migration app must access the categories it transfers. Samsung’s Google Play listing describes permissions for contacts, calendars, call logs, SMS, files and media, nearby-device discovery, and—in some versions—phone, camera, or location functions. Data-safety disclosures are not a blanket guarantee
The same Google Play listing reports “No data shared with third parties” and “Data isn’t encrypted.” Google Play explains that data-safety information is supplied by the developer and that practices can vary by use, region, and age. Treat these as the listing’s disclosures, not proof that every transfer is handled identically or an independent finding about security.
Malware does not become harmless just because you transfer phones
If you suspect spyware or malware on the old phone, do not treat migration as a cleanup step. The cited academic paper describes a particular Android attack model; it is not evidence that a normal Smart Switch or Android transfer automatically carries a virus. Still, avoid restoring suspicious apps or files, and check both phones with their platform security features before relying on the new device.

What transfers depend on the phones and method
Before starting, compare the source and destination operating systems, exact device models, transfer method, supported data categories, and whether the process is available only during initial setup. Also check whether a cloud backup must be enabled separately and review the transfer app’s permissions and disclosures. Google notes that transfer may be limited to setup and that organization-managed phones can have restrictions. Google’s Android transfer guidance

Apps, app data, and cloud-restored content
Copying or reinstalling an app is not the same as moving its private data or signing in to its account. Samsung says Smart Switch can reinstall a game app but cannot transfer the game data. For WhatsApp on Android, Google says chats and data restore from the cloud after you sign in on the new phone and open WhatsApp, provided backups were enabled on the old device. How to transfer with less risk
- Use the official route. Start with the built-in setup flow or the transfer app published by the phone maker or operating-system provider. Check the publisher before installing an app.
- Check compatibility and timing. Confirm the exact models, operating systems, supported categories, and whether transfer must happen during setup. For a managed work or school phone, check with the administrator if transfer options are restricted.
- Prepare both phones. Charge them and check available storage. For iPhone-to-Android moves, follow Google’s preparation guidance, including turning off iMessage and FaceTime. If official instructions recommend a wired transfer, use a cable or adapter compatible with both phones’ ports.
- Review access and select only what you need. Read the requested permissions and choose relevant data categories rather than assuming the tool needs or will copy everything.
- Keep a separate backup. Do not rely on the phone-to-phone transfer as your only copy of important information.
- Verify before erasing the old phone. Check important photos, messages, contacts, and account access on the destination. Keep the old phone until you have confirmed what matters is present and usable.
If you suspect the old phone is compromised
Do not assume copying its contents will remove the problem. Avoid restoring suspicious apps or files, use the security features available on both devices to check them, and be selective about what you move. If you cannot establish that the new phone is clean, seek help from the device maker or a qualified security professional before using it for sensitive accounts.

Samsung says Smart Switch does not remove content from either phone, so the transferred data remains on both. Its support page also says supported content depends on the connected device, and the transfer is intended to move data to Galaxy rather than from Galaxy to a non-Galaxy phone. Its Play Store permission explanations and data-safety statements are useful inputs to a decision, but they should be read as publisher disclosures, not an independent audit or universal guarantee.
