Phantom Blade Zero is best described as a wuxia action RPG with Soulslike elements, not a traditional Soulslike. Its interconnected routes, shortcuts, checkpoints, challenging bosses, and dark atmosphere fit the comparison. But previews describe combat that is faster, more combo-focused, and less dependent on stamina management than the usual Soulslike formula.
What kind of game is Phantom Blade Zero?
The official PlayStation listing calls Phantom Blade Zero a dark wuxia action RPG. S-GAME, the developer, has described its combat philosophy as fast hack-and-slash action shaped by kung fu films, rather than the slower, more strategic approach associated with Soulslikes. Steam’s user-defined tags include both “Souls-like” and “Hack and Slash,” but those are community labels, not an official genre classification.
The distinction matters if you are trying to predict how the game feels. Its world and boss design borrow recognizable Soulslike ideas, while its combat aims for a more fluid, cinematic action-game rhythm.
Why does Phantom Blade Zero get compared with Soulslikes?
A six-hour preview by MeriStation reported interconnected areas, locked doors, shortcuts, checkpoints, a dark tone, and challenging bosses. The outlet also reported that S-GAME described the game as “30% Soulslike.” Treat that as an attributed shorthand for its influences, not a measured share or a complete genre definition. - Built-in microphone and headset jack - Chat with friends online using the built-in microphone or by connecting a headset to the 3.5mm jack. Easily switch voice capture on and off at a moment’s notice with the dedicated mute button. Internet and account for PlayStation Network required.
- DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
Those structural similarities can make exploration and encounters feel familiar to Soulslike players. They do not, on their own, mean the combat follows the same pace or resource rules.
How does its combat differ from a Soulslike?
Faster, more choreographed exchanges
S-GAME says it wants sleek movement inspired by 1990s kung fu films and cites hack-and-slash games such as Devil May Cry and Ninja Gaiden as inspirations. The developer has emphasized handcrafted animation: “Combat moves in Phantom Blade Zero have to be made with handcrafted animation, because motion capturing can’t do it justice.” S-GAME’s 2023 developer post on PlayStation Blog

Hands-on impressions reinforce that aim. PC Gamer describes elaborate animations and combo transitions, while MeriStation reports fast combat without a stamina bar in the preview build it played. Those observations point toward continuous, expressive offense rather than the stamina-aware pauses common in many Soulslikes. They are preview impressions, not a guarantee that every difficulty setting or final-build encounter works identically.

Parries are part of the toolkit
Parrying contributes to the Sekiro comparison, but the feel may differ. PC Gamer’s preview found the parry timing more generous than in Sekiro. That is one outlet’s hands-on impression, not a universal timing specification or a promise that the games share the same defense system. PC Gamer’s preview and interview

Progression and death penalties may be less Soulslike
In the normal-difficulty preview build MeriStation played, the outlet reported no loss of souls or experience on death. It also said upgrades centered on unlocking combos and moves rather than farming a currency to raise character attributes. These are specific to the preview described by MeriStation; the available evidence does not establish that every difficulty or the final release uses identical rules.
Is Phantom Blade Zero like Sekiro?
There is a meaningful overlap in demanding enemy encounters and the importance of parries. The comparison should stop there unless you have played the final game: preview reporting describes more generous parry timing than Sekiro, and a faster rhythm with no stamina bar in the build MeriStation tried. Sekiro is therefore a useful reference for the pressure of reading enemies, but not a reliable one-to-one guide to Phantom Blade Zero’s combat pace.

Is it more like Devil May Cry or Dark Souls?
It combines elements associated with both, but the combat descriptions lean more toward character-action games such as Devil May Cry than toward the slower Soulslike template. S-GAME explicitly names hack-and-slash influences and choreographed kung fu action; previews describe quick combos. Dark Souls is the more useful comparison for its reported interconnected level design, shortcuts, checkpoints, and difficult bosses.

In practical terms, players who enjoy learning enemy patterns may recognize the challenge, while players who want fast, animation-led combos may find the combat identity closer to an action game. Neither comparison should be treated as a promise about the final release beyond what the developer and previews have stated.

What weapons and platforms are confirmed?
In its August 17, 2026 gameplay overview, S-GAME said the game has more than 30 main weapons and 25 secondary weapons called Phantom Edges. PlayStation’s current feature page gives a different secondary-weapon count—20+ Phantom Edges—so the latest S-GAME figure is the clearest current count to cite, with the publication-date difference noted.
