Yes. Permafrost can be played alone or in online co-op with up to four players total—one host or participant plus as many as three friends. Steam lists both “Single-player” and “Online Co-op,” while the publisher describes the same four-player arrangement. The game is currently in Early Access, so features, stability and multiplayer behavior may change as development continues.
This is a story-driven survival sandbox from SpaceRocket Games and Toplitz Productions. You play Rook, an engineer, in a frozen post-apocalyptic world where exploration, scavenging, crafting, hunting and shelter building are central to survival.

Can you play Permafrost as a solo player?
Yes. Solo play is a supported mode rather than a workaround for missing multiplayer. The official descriptions present going alone as one of the intended ways to experience the game. A lone player takes on the same broad survival loop: moving through frozen cities and wilderness, finding supplies, crafting equipment, hunting, managing exposure to brutal weather, and establishing shelters.

Playing alone means every survival task is handled by one character. You must decide what to carry, which areas to search, when to return to shelter and how much time to spend pursuing resources or story objectives. The official material does not publish a separate “solo campaign,” reduced difficulty setting or special single-player rules, so those details should not be assumed.
What the solo experience includes
- A story-driven starting point centered on Rook, an engineer.
- Exploration of frozen urban areas and wilderness.
- Scavenging, hunting and crafting as core survival activities.
- Building shelters and a wider network of safe locations.
- Multiple biomes, hundreds of items, building blueprints and crafting recipes in the Early Access build.

The Steam listing confirms that these systems and content types are part of the Early Access build, but it does not quantify the final campaign length or promise that all planned regions and story arcs are already present.
How Permafrost co-op works
Co-op is online and supports a maximum party size of four. In practical terms, that means you can play with one, two or three friends; a fifth player is outside the stated limit. What a four-player group can do
- Explore frozen cities and wilderness as a group.
- Search for materials and other useful items while covering more ground.
- Hunt and gather resources needed for crafting and shelter construction.
- Build a network of shelters intended to help the group endure the post-apocalyptic environment.
- Follow the available narrative starting point and side quests while cooperating online.
The official descriptions establish the activities and player count, but they do not explain how roles are assigned. There is no confirmed class system, fixed specialist role, party matchmaking rule or requirement that every player own identical characters. Treat the four-person limit as the reliable information; details about optimal team composition are not documented in the cited official pages.
Online does not mean local split-screen
Steam labels the feature “Online Co-op.” That confirms internet-based cooperative play, not couch co-op on one computer or console. The official pages reviewed do not list local multiplayer, split-screen or a same-device mode. If local play is important to you, do not count on it unless a later official update adds that capability.
What is confirmed—and what is still unknown
Because Permafrost is in Early Access, it is important to separate documented features from multiplayer details that have not been published.

These unknowns matter most if you are organizing a regular group. Before buying specifically for shared progression or cross-platform sessions, check the latest developer or publisher announcement rather than assuming that common survival-game features are present.

The Early Access release date shown on Steam is October 9, 2026. The current build is therefore a work in progress, even though its listed starting narrative, side quests and four-player co-op are described as functional. Early Access can involve balancing changes, additional content, interface revisions, performance work and fixes that affect both solo and online sessions.
Expect a defined starting scope, not a finished world
The listing identifies multiple biomes, hundreds of items, blueprints and recipes, plus the beginning of the narrative. Those are useful indicators of the available systems, but they do not establish the final number of biomes, the completed story, the ultimate item count or the timetable for leaving Early Access. A player who wants a complete campaign should treat the current release as an evolving version.

Multiplayer functionality can evolve
“Implemented and functional” means the advertised co-op feature is present in the Early Access build. It does not promise uninterrupted service, final network performance or unchanged save behavior. Updates may alter how sessions connect, how objectives are synchronized or how progression is stored. Keep the game updated and read the current patch notes or official announcements when a change affects your group.

Choose solo if you want control over pace
Solo play is the better fit when you prefer to explore without coordinating schedules, divide resources at your own speed or make survival decisions independently. It also avoids the uncertainty around group progression because you are not relying on another player’s session. The official information does not claim that solo and co-op have different stories, so do not assume that one mode contains exclusive narrative content.

Choose co-op if you have a stable online group
Online co-op makes sense when two to four people want to share the survival loop. A group can explore and gather together, but each player still needs a reliable online connection and a compatible copy of the game. Since the official pages do not specify matchmaking, server ownership or cross-play, arrange sessions on the assumption that your group must use whatever connection options the Early Access build currently exposes.

Use a flexible expectation if you are buying during Early Access
If your priority is a finished, settled multiplayer ecosystem, wait for more documentation or later development milestones. If you are comfortable with an evolving game and want either solo survival or a four-person online group now, the advertised modes are already part of the current release.
Practical questions to check before starting a group
The following checklist does not add unconfirmed features; it helps you avoid misunderstandings about what the official pages leave open.
- Confirm that everyone is purchasing the PC Early Access version listed on Steam.
- Agree on a regular session time, since the official pages do not describe drop-in or drop-out behavior.
- Decide who will organize the first session while you verify the game’s current connection and save rules in its own menus or documentation.
- Do not promise shared progression, cross-play or local multiplayer to friends until the developer explicitly documents those functions.
- Keep backups of important saves if an update changes behavior; Early Access software can change between builds.
The first four-player session should be treated as a feature check for your own group: confirm that everyone can connect, that the intended narrative or side-quest state appears correctly, and that you understand how the current build records progress. Those observations are version-specific and should not be generalized as permanent game rules.
