Path of Exile 2 is not free to play during Early Access. You currently need a paid Early Access key, usually obtained through an official supporter pack. Grinding Gear Games (GGG) says the planned full release will be free to play, and buyers will not have to purchase the game again. GGG has not confirmed a full-release date in the official sources reviewed.
After you have access, spending on points, cosmetics, supporter-pack extras, and stash tabs is optional. The important qualifications are that prices and bundle contents change, Path of Exile 1 purchases transfer only where relevant, and some entitlements are platform-specific.
What “free to play” means for Path of Exile 2 right now
There are two different access states, and confusing them produces most of the contradictory answers online:

In other words, “free to play” describes the intended full-release model, not the current Early Access entry requirement. A temporary free weekend does not change that status. GGG’s 2025 announcement described free-weekend access as temporary and said players who wanted to continue afterward needed an Early Access key or could wait for the full release; see the official announcement.

Do you have to buy Early Access?
Yes, if you want to play during Early Access and do not have access through a temporary promotion. The normal route is purchasing an Early Access supporter pack that includes a key. You are not buying a recurring subscription: the pack is a one-time digital purchase whose contents are listed on the store page at the time you buy it.
The exact amount and contents can change. A snapshot of the GGG store accessed October 13, 2026 showed these examples:

These are historical page values, not a promise of the current price. Check the live listing, currency, tax treatment, and platform before checkout. Supporter packs can also contain cosmetic items, soundtrack access, or other digital rewards. Higher tiers may list physical merchandise or an art book; those are optional pack rewards, and shipping or customs can add costs.

GGG’s stated answer is no. In a January 25, 2025 forum clarification, GGG staff member Vash_GGG wrote: Please note that Path of Exile 2 will be Free to Play on release, and you will not need to buy this again.
The statement addresses the game purchase itself. It does not promise that every future cosmetic, stash tab, or supporter reward will be free.

Because no confirmed launch date appears in the cited official sources, treat “full release” as a planned transition rather than a scheduled event. Buying Early Access gives you access under the current Early Access terms; it does not let you infer a date from the free-to-play plan.
What can cost extra after you have access?
Supporter packs
Supporter packs combine the Early Access key with additional items. Depending on the tier, a pack may include points, cosmetics, soundtrack access, and selected physical rewards. The key distinction is that the bundle price is not a second access fee: once the game reaches its planned free-to-play release, GGG has said buyers will not need to purchase the game again.
Do not assume every tier contains the same key, point amount, or reward type. Read the live description for the exact pack, account, platform, delivery method, and any shipping or customs terms.

Points are the shop currency used for optional microtransactions. The Early Access FAQ says the cosmetics shop is available during Early Access with a selection of Path of Exile 1 microtransactions. Cosmetic purchases change your character’s appearance or other presentation features; they are not described by GGG as a requirement to enter the game or complete its content.

Compatibility is not universal. GGG has been making Path of Exile 1 microtransactions available in Path of Exile 2 over time, and the available catalog can differ between the two games. Before spending points, open the Path of Exile 2 in-game store and confirm that the item is listed for that game and your account. Avoid buying an item in Path of Exile 1 solely on the assumption that it is immediately usable in Path of Exile 2.
Stash tabs
Stash tabs expand and organize the storage shared by your characters. GGG’s purchase page lists extra-tab offers, including the First Blood Pack example above. They are convenience purchases, not an access gate: you can play Path of Exile 2 without buying a specific tab.
Whether a tab is useful depends on how much loot you keep, how often you trade, and whether you want dedicated organization for particular item types. The existence of an optional tab does not establish that the game is pay-to-win, nor does it mean that every player needs one to finish the campaign.
Physical merchandise and art books
Some high-tier supporter packs may include physical merchandise or an art book. These rewards are extras attached to selected supporter tiers, not products required to play. The cited official material does not establish a separate Amazon listing or an independently available physical product for this question. If you choose a tier with physical rewards, account for shipping, customs, delivery region, and the possibility that the reward is available only while supplies last or under the pack’s stated terms.

Are Path of Exile 1 stash tabs and cosmetics available in Path of Exile 2?
GGG’s Early Access FAQ gives a qualified answer rather than a blanket transfer guarantee:
- Stash-tab purchases made in Path of Exile 1 will be available in Path of Exile 2 “where relevant.”
- A tab tied to a league or feature that does not exist in Path of Exile 2 may not have an equivalent use there.
- Not all Path of Exile 1 microtransactions were available at the start of Early Access; GGG said it was working through the backlog.
- The store would begin with a selection of Path of Exile 1 microtransactions and add more later.
- Some purchases are platform-specific, so an entitlement on one platform should not be assumed to appear on another.
The FAQ’s wording is important: “where relevant” describes compatibility, not a promise that every historical item will be present immediately or function identically. Store catalogs and supported platforms can change, so verify the target game and platform’s shop before relying on an old purchase.
How to decide whether to spend money
If you only want to try the game
- Decide whether you need access before full release. If you are willing to wait, the stated free-to-play plan means a game purchase should not be necessary at full release.
- If you want Early Access, open the official purchase page and compare the current key-containing packs.
- Check the account and platform that will launch the game. Do not assume a console purchase, PC purchase, or a different account automatically shares every entitlement.
- Choose the lowest-cost current option that supplies the access you need; treat additional points and cosmetics as bonus value, not an entry requirement.
If you already own Path of Exile 1 purchases
- Sign in to the same account you intend to use for Path of Exile 2.
- Open the Path of Exile 2 shop and look for the specific tab or cosmetic rather than assuming the entire Path of Exile 1 catalog is present.
- Check whether the item depends on a league or feature that exists in Path of Exile 2.
- Confirm platform availability before buying a duplicate item or concluding that a purchase is missing.
If you are considering a supporter pack
- Separate the Early Access key from the optional rewards in the bundle.
- Compare the points, cosmetics, and other items with what you would actually use.
- Read the current price and delivery terms; the October 13, 2026 snapshot is not a permanent price list.
- For physical rewards, include shipping and customs in the total and verify destination eligibility.
Common misunderstandings and how to avoid them
“The game is free to play, so I can download it now without paying.”
That confuses the planned full-release model with Early Access. Current Early Access access requires a paid key unless a temporary event or other entitlement applies.
“Buying a supporter pack means I will pay again when the game launches.”
GGG’s published clarification says buyers will not need to buy the game again at release. Separate optional shop purchases remain separate: a future cosmetic or tab can still cost points or money.

“I need stash tabs to play properly.”
Tabs improve storage and organization, but GGG lists them as shop purchases, not an access requirement. Decide based on your inventory and trading habits rather than treating a tab as mandatory.
“Every Path of Exile 1 cosmetic automatically works in Path of Exile 2.”
The official FAQ does not make that promise. Availability is being expanded over time, some items may not be relevant, and platform restrictions can apply. Check the Path of Exile 2 shop for the exact item.
“The free weekend proves the game is permanently free now.”
The 2025 event was temporary. Its announcement distinguished the event from both paid Early Access and the planned free-to-play full release.
Where to verify the current terms
Use GGG’s own pages immediately before purchasing because prices, pack contents, supported platforms, and the cosmetic catalog can change:
- GGG purchase page — current supporter packs, keys, points, stash-tab offers, and physical-reward terms.
- Path of Exile 2 Early Access FAQ — shop availability, microtransactions, stash-tab carry-over, and compatibility caveats.
- GGG clarification on Early Access supporter packs — the statement that the planned full release is free to play and buyers will not need to buy the game again.
- 2025 free-weekend announcement — the distinction between temporary free access and the ongoing Early Access model.
Those pages are the safest way to resolve a discrepancy between an older guide, a storefront display, and the entitlement shown on your account.
