Yes. Overwatch 2 is free to download and play on supported PC and console platforms. You do not have to buy the base game, skins, Battle Passes, or coins to start playing. Optional spending covers seasonal Battle Passes, Overwatch Coins, shop cosmetics, and limited-time bundles.
Blizzard now presents the live game on its official site simply as Overwatch, but the free-to-play model associated with Overwatch 2 remains. Your final price can differ by platform, country, taxes, currency conversion, and season.
What does Overwatch 2 cost to start?
The entry price is $0. Blizzard describes the game as free-to-play, and its launch announcement listed Windows PC, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch.

What is included for free?
Free-to-play means you can access the game without purchasing a premium edition. The free download is the starting point for the live multiplayer experience, while paid items are layered on top as optional purchases.
You can also use the free Battle Pass track when a season is active. Blizzard’s Battle Pass explanation describes a free track available to everyone alongside the optional Premium Battle Pass. The free track is separate from the question of whether you choose to buy cosmetic items in the shop.

What you do not need to buy
- A boxed copy of the game
- A one-time license for the base game
- A Battle Pass in order to begin playing
- Skins, emotes, sprays, or other shop cosmetics
- Overwatch Coins before your first match
The free model does not mean every digital item is free. It means the game itself has no required purchase price.
How much is the Overwatch 2 Battle Pass?
Blizzard’s published Premium Battle Pass example priced it at 1,000 Overwatch Coins, equivalent to US$10. That figure comes from Blizzard Entertainment’s 2022 Battle Pass explanation and should be treated as the stated example, not a guarantee that every later season, platform, currency, or tax-inclusive checkout will show exactly the same total.
A Premium Battle Pass is optional. Buying it gives access to the premium reward track for that season; not buying it leaves the free track available. Battle Pass contents, levels, rewards, and seasonal offers can change, so inspect the current in-game or storefront description before paying.

What 1,000 Overwatch Coins means
Coins are the game’s virtual currency. The quoted 1,000-coin price is a denomination and its stated US-dollar equivalent, not a universal exchange rate for every country. Your platform may sell coins in different bundles, and local taxes or rounding can alter the amount charged at checkout.

Current paid examples on Steam
A Steam listing observed for 2026 Season 5 showed two seasonal examples. These are storefront prices for that listing, not permanent prices for every platform or season.
| Item | Observed price | What the figure represents |
|---|---|---|
| Overwatch Starter Pack 2026: Season 5 | $9.99 | A seasonal digital bundle shown on Steam |
| Overwatch Ultimate Battle Pass Bundle 2026: Season 5 | $39.99 | A larger seasonal digital bundle shown on Steam |
The $9.99 and $39.99 amounts are examples from the Steam listing observed for 2026 Season 5. They can expire, be replaced, or differ on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, or another regional storefront. A bundle’s name also does not establish that it is required for access; the base game remains listed as free-to-play.
What can you spend money on?
Overwatch 2’s optional spending falls into several categories. Knowing which category you are buying helps prevent confusing a cosmetic purchase with a gameplay requirement.
Premium Battle Passes
A Premium Battle Pass adds a paid reward track to the season’s free track. Blizzard’s published example is 1,000 Overwatch Coins, equivalent to $10 in the United States. The pass is tied to the season and should be evaluated against how much of that season you expect to play.

Overwatch Coins
Coins are purchased through the game’s digital economy and can be used for eligible seasonal or shop items. The amount you pay depends on the coin bundle offered by your platform and region. A coin balance is not the same thing as a required subscription or a license to the base game.
Shop cosmetics
Shop items can include visual customization and other cosmetic content. These purchases are optional: skipping them does not prevent you from downloading the game or playing without paid skins.
Seasonal bundles
Bundles package several digital items under a seasonal name. The Steam examples for 2026 Season 5 were the $9.99 Starter Pack and $39.99 Ultimate Battle Pass Bundle. Because these offers are seasonal, check the expiry date, included items, and platform listing before purchase.
Are new heroes locked behind the Battle Pass?
No. Blizzard’s developer update says heroes no longer need to be unlocked through the Battle Pass. That removes the requirement to buy a premium track simply to obtain a new hero.
The same update says that, beginning with Season 10, players earn coins through both the free and premium Battle Pass tracks. The practical result is that a player who stays on the free track can still earn coins, while a Premium Battle Pass provides a different reward path. The exact amount and reward placement depend on the active season’s track.
What this changes for a free player
- You can start without buying a Battle Pass.
- You do not have to purchase a premium track to unlock heroes.
- You can receive the free Battle Pass track’s listed rewards.
- From Season 10 onward, the developer update says coins appear on both free and premium tracks.
This does not make every cosmetic item free. It separates hero access from optional monetization and leaves shop cosmetics, bundles, and premium rewards as spending choices.

Do you need PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass?
There is no single universal subscription requirement established by the available official pricing information. Console online-service rules can vary by platform, game category, account type, and current policy, and the rules may change independently of Blizzard’s $0 game price.
For the definitive answer, open the current Overwatch listing on your own PlayStation or Xbox storefront and read the online-play requirement shown for your account and region. Do not infer a subscription charge from the game’s free-to-play label alone, and do not assume that a subscription, if shown by a platform, is the price of Overwatch itself.
How regional and platform pricing changes your total
The dollar amounts above are not a worldwide price list. A checkout total can differ for four practical reasons:
- Platform: Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo storefronts can display different bundles or denominations.
- Region and currency: Local pricing may use your country’s currency rather than US dollars.
- Taxes: Tax treatment can change the amount shown at the final checkout step.
- Season: Battle Passes and bundles are tied to a live-service schedule and may be replaced after a season.
Use the in-game store or your platform’s current product page as the final authority. A historical or observed price is useful for orientation, but it is not a promise about your account’s checkout screen.

If you want one specific cosmetic
Check the item’s direct shop price and availability rather than buying a larger bundle automatically. Seasonal shop items can rotate or expire, so confirm what is included and how long the offer remains available.
If you are considering a bundle
List every included item and compare that list with your actual goal. The Steam $9.99 Starter Pack and $39.99 Ultimate Battle Pass Bundle were 2026 Season 5 examples; neither figure should be treated as a universal or permanent requirement.
A practical cost checklist before checkout
- Confirm that you are on the official store page for your platform and region.
- Check whether the product is the free base game, a coin pack, a Battle Pass, or a seasonal bundle.
- Read the included-items list instead of relying on the product name.
- Look for the season identifier and any end date or rotation notice.
- Check the final tax-inclusive total in your local currency.
- Make sure you are signed into the account that will use the purchase.
- Only confirm payment after deciding that the cosmetic or premium rewards are worth the cost to you.
Common misunderstandings about “free”
“Free” does not mean every item costs nothing
The game has a $0 entry price, while optional digital goods can cost money. This is the standard distinction between free-to-play access and in-game monetization.
A Battle Pass is not the same as the game
The Premium Battle Pass is an add-on to the free game. Blizzard’s published example priced it at 1,000 coins, equivalent to $10, but buying it is not a prerequisite for installation or ordinary access.
A seasonal bundle is not a permanent edition
The Steam Season 5 products were time-specific listings. Their prices and contents should not be copied as a standing price for every later season or platform.
Hero access is separate from cosmetic access
Blizzard says heroes no longer need to be unlocked through the Battle Pass. That policy does not imply that every shop cosmetic or premium reward is included for free.
Bottom line for your budget
Plan on $0 to start playing. Set aside optional spending only if you want a Premium Battle Pass, Overwatch Coins, shop cosmetics, or a seasonal bundle. Blizzard’s published Premium Battle Pass example was 1,000 coins, equivalent to $10 in 2022; Steam’s 2026 Season 5 listing showed a $9.99 Starter Pack and a $39.99 Ultimate Battle Pass Bundle. Check your own platform, region, taxes, and current season before treating any figure as your final total.
