Over Fifty Home and Contents is an Allianz-underwritten, sum-insured policy: you choose separate amounts for your building and belongings, and those amounts need to reflect what it would cost to repair or replace them. CHOICE’s review snapshot lists broad insured-event cover, but key conditions, exclusions and optional extras affect how useful that cover is. Its open review page does not show a numerical score or price rating, so there is not enough public information to call it the best or cheapest policy.

Who underwrites Over Fifty Home and Contents?

CHOICE identifies Allianz Australia Insurance Limited as the provider of Over Fifty Home and Contents. CHOICE also says the policy’s cover is identical to eight other policies in its comparison, although their prices may differ. That means the Over Fifty name alone does not establish a price advantage. CHOICE’s Over Fifty review is a comparison snapshot; the applicable Product Disclosure Statement (PDS), Key Fact Sheet and policy schedule set out the contract terms.

What does the policy cover?

The policy is sum-insured: you nominate a building sum insured and a separate contents sum insured. CHOICE’s review lists cover for these events, subject to the policy’s conditions and exclusions:

  • Theft, with restrictions on who commits the theft.
  • Fire and bushfire, and flood and run-off.
  • Storm and cyclone, escape of water, vandalism and impact.
  • Earthquake, tsunami and explosion.

CHOICE lists storm surge and action of the sea as not covered. A listed insured event does not mean every loss associated with it is covered: the cause, timing, property maintenance and specific wording can matter.

Flood, storm and waiting periods

CHOICE’s snapshot lists a 72-hour waiting period for bushfire and grassfire, flood, and cyclone cover. For flood, it lists flood and run-off, as well as specified earth movement directly caused by flood within 72 hours, subject to exclusions. For storm and cyclone, it lists storm, rainwater and run-off, including water entering through openings made by the storm. Its summary also identifies exclusions involving hydrostatic pressure, poor maintenance, known defects or deterioration, and certain pool or retaining-wall damage. Check the wording for the policy being quoted rather than assuming the event label settles a claim.

Theft and water leaks

CHOICE lists theft by tenants renting a separate dwelling at the insured address, but not theft by residents, invited people, employees or people acting with consent. For escape of water, its snapshot describes cover for specified fixed pipes, appliances, sinks, baths, tanks, pools and other apparatus, while identifying exclusions for leaks a policyholder could reasonably have been expected to know about, defective parts and certain shower-area damage.

CHOICE separately describes Over Fifty as covering gradual leaks in a comparison article. Read these statements together: some gradual-leak cover may exist, but not every gradual leak or resulting damage is necessarily covered. The circumstances and applicable PDS determine how the terms apply. CHOICE’s explanation of home-insurance cover provides comparison context, not a substitute for the policy wording.

What cover is optional?

Accidental damage

CHOICE lists accidental damage as optional. Its examples include accidental damage to the home or contents, motor burnout, some water entering through an open door or window, overflow from a tap left running with the plug in, scorching or melting, ceramic tiles and specified electronic screens. These are examples from CHOICE’s review, not a guarantee that every incident or item qualifies. Check whether the option is included in the quote, what excess applies and which items or circumstances are excluded.

Portable contents

Portable contents cover is also listed as optional. CHOICE’s snapshot gives an overall selected limit of $1,000–$7,500 for unspecified portable items, with per-item limits of $500–$2,000. Those figures are review-page specifications; confirm the available choices, conditions and limits in the current PDS and schedule.

Which limits could affect a claim?

CHOICE’s review lists legal liability cover up to $20 million and temporary accommodation for up to 12 months or 10% of the sum insured. It also lists up to $2,000 for contents kept in the open air and specific limits for selected jewellery, artworks and collections. These are summary figures, not a promise that every claim receives the maximum: sublimits, eligibility rules, exclusions and the policy schedule matter.

How should you choose the sums insured?

Because the policy depends on nominated sums, an amount that is too low can leave you underinsured; an amount that is too high may mean paying for more cover than you need. Estimate building replacement needs separately from the value of household contents, and check whether any special limits apply to valuable items. A home inventory record book can help you list belongings and estimated values; it is an optional record-keeping aid, not an insurer requirement.

How does Over Fifty compare with other home insurance?

CHOICE says its Expert Rating combines a Cover score weighted at 60% and a national Price score weighted at 40%; its methodology was last updated in 2024. The method also scores policy features and restrictions, and gives lower component scores to cover available only as an optional extra than to equivalent default cover. CHOICE’s insurance review methodology explains the rating framework.

CHOICE’s open Over Fifty page does not disclose its numerical cover score, overall Expert Rating, price score, member recommendation or customer satisfaction results. It says the insurer does not share price data with CHOICE, and the review scores the policy on cover only. A live quote is therefore necessary to assess the actual premium.

  • Temporary accommodation limits and relevant item sublimits.
  • Exclusions, waiting periods and any conditions that fit your property or household.

Which policy documents should you check?

Over Fifty says its webpage is a limited summary of cover and directs customers to the relevant PDS and Key Fact Sheets for terms, limits and exclusions. Its official home insurance page says: “This is a limited summary of cover only.” The insurer’s policy-document index separates documents by effective date and flood-cover arrangement. It identifies PDS policies effective from 21 December 2025 as having flood cover standard for that class, and says domestic workers’ compensation can no longer be added to a Home and Contents policy. Which documents and terms apply depends on the specific policy. Before buying or renewing, match the PDS, Key Fact Sheet and schedule to the quote and its effective date.

How to reach a decision

  1. Get a current quote using realistic building and contents sums insured.
  2. Check the schedule to see which optional covers and limits are actually selected.
  3. Read the matching PDS and Key Fact Sheet for exclusions, waiting periods, excesses and claim conditions.
  4. Compare the quote against alternatives with the same sums insured and a similar mix of included and optional cover.
