No. NETGEAR Orbi is a mesh WiFi system, not an internet service provider (ISP). Your ISP supplies the internet connection; Orbi’s router and satellites distribute that connection around your home. One model-specific exception is the Orbi CBR750, which includes a cable modem as well as a router—but it still requires cable internet service.
Internet service and WiFi do different jobs
An ISP is the company that supplies your home’s internet access. Orbi does not provide that service: NETGEAR says an Orbi system requires an internet connection from an ISP. Orbi is the equipment that creates and extends a WiFi network using the connection your provider delivers.
The basic path is: ISP service enters your home through the equipment used for that service, connects to the Orbi router, and is then shared over WiFi. Orbi satellites extend the network to other areas of the home. They do not create an internet connection independently.
What equipment Orbi needs
Most Orbi systems connect to an existing modem, gateway, or other provider-supplied connection device. The correct equipment depends on the type of internet service. Cable service generally uses a cable modem or cable gateway; fiber generally involves an ONT or Fiber Jack; satellite service uses a provider terminal. The service device and any modem must be suitable for the ISP.

A router alone is usually not enough to connect to the provider’s network. Check your service type, existing equipment, ISP requirements, and the exact Orbi model before buying a modem or mesh system. NETGEAR’s guidance explains how equipment compatibility depends on the ISP and service type.
The Orbi model with a built-in cable modem
The CBR750 is a specific Orbi cable modem/router model. It can connect to a cable wall outlet and combines cable modem and router functions. You still need cable internet service, and the equipment must be compatible with your ISP. This exception does not apply to every Orbi system and does not replace an ONT or provider terminal for fiber or satellite service.

How Orbi connects and extends your network
The router connects to the service equipment
For a typical setup, connect the Orbi router’s yellow Internet port to the modem’s Ethernet port with the supplied Ethernet cable. The router then creates the Orbi network. NETGEAR’s Orbi setup guidance describes this connection.

Satellites extend WiFi coverage
Place Orbi satellites where they can communicate with the router, and they extend the WiFi network to additional areas. Depending on the model, router-to-satellite communication can use a wireless backhaul or Ethernet backhaul. Supported features, ports, and speeds vary by system; NETGEAR describes the options in its guidance on tri-band Orbi systems and Ethernet backhaul.
In NETGEAR’s general description, tri-band Orbi systems use two bands for WiFi devices and a dedicated 5 GHz link for communication between the router and satellites. That description should not be assumed to apply to every Orbi model.

Choose AP mode or router mode
The right Orbi operating mode depends on whether your existing modem or gateway already performs router functions. NETGEAR’s guidance is to use AP mode when the existing gateway or modem has router functionality, and router mode when it does not. The exact setup steps and labels can differ by model and software, so follow the instructions for your specific Orbi system.
What to check before getting Orbi
- Identify your internet service: cable, fiber, satellite, or another type determines what connection equipment is needed.
- Check your current device: find out whether your modem or gateway already includes a router.
- Confirm compatibility: check the provider’s requirements for the modem or other connection device and for the Orbi model you plan to use.
- Look for a built-in modem only if relevant: the CBR750 is a cable modem/router; do not assume other Orbi models include a modem.
- Use the included setup cable: NETGEAR says an Ethernet cable is supplied with the system, so it is not normally a separate purchase needed just to connect the router to the modem.
