Yes. Opera’s built-in VPN is free and offers unlimited data transfer, but it protects traffic in the Opera browser—not every app on your device. Opera’s paid VPN Pro service is the option it describes as covering the whole device.
Is Opera VPN free, and does it have a data limit?
Opera describes its built-in browser VPN as free, with no account required and unlimited data transfer. That answers the cost and data-cap questions, but “unlimited” does not mean a guaranteed connection speed: Opera says browsing speed can vary with server load.
Opera lists Europe, Asia, and the Americas as selectable desktop locations, along with an automatic optimal location. Its product page describes three general locations for Free VPN and 48 country regions for VPN Pro; those counts can change. Availability and choices may differ by platform.

What does Opera’s free VPN protect?
The free feature routes connections made through Opera’s browser to a VPN server. Opera says the browser-to-server connection is encrypted and that websites see the VPN server’s apparent IP address and location rather than the user’s usual ones. It is not a system-wide VPN tunnel for traffic from other apps.

Opera positions VPN Pro as whole-device protection, in contrast with the browser-only free feature. VPN Pro is paid; check Opera’s current regional pricing and terms before subscribing.
Does Opera VPN keep logs?
Opera says the free browser VPN does not log browsing activity or the originating network address. The company also says Deloitte independently audited its no-log policy. These are Opera’s descriptions of the policy and audit; the underlying audit report is not included in the cited announcements, so they should not be read as an independent review of the report.

Opera says it funds the free feature through its broader business, including advertising, partnerships, and paid subscriptions. A VPN can improve privacy on local networks, including public Wi-Fi, but it does not make all activity anonymous. Opera notes that cookies may still identify visitors even when their location is disguised.
Does Opera VPN turn on automatically on public Wi-Fi?
Opera announced on September 24, 2026, that desktop Opera can automatically enable the free VPN when it detects a public Wi-Fi network. The setting is off by default and must be enabled by the user. Opera said the feature was rolling out first in the United States and France, so availability may depend on rollout, platform, and settings.

What to keep in mind
- Free means no charge for the built-in browser feature; it does not include VPN Pro.
- Unlimited data transfer is not a promise of unlimited speed. Opera says server load can affect browsing speed.
- The free VPN covers Opera browser connections, not all traffic from the device.
- A VPN changes the apparent network location and encrypts the browser-to-VPN connection, but cookies and other tracking methods can still identify users.
