Obsidian Sync is worth paying for if you want automatic, supported synchronization across different operating systems, built-in recovery, and end-to-end encryption. It is less compelling for an Apple-only setup that already works well with iCloud, or for a technical user comfortable maintaining Syncthing or a Git workflow. The right choice depends on how many devices you use, how much you value recovery and privacy, and whether you prefer a subscription or your own storage and administration.
The short answer
Obsidian Sync solves more than the basic problem of copying Markdown files between devices. Its paid service combines background synchronization, conflict-aware merging, selective synchronization, configuration syncing, file recovery, activity logs, shared vaults, offline work, and later synchronization. It also offers end-to-end encryption (E2EE), so the encryption key is controlled by you rather than the service provider.
That bundle is the main reason to subscribe. A free folder-sync arrangement can move files, but it may not provide the same recovery controls, cross-platform consistency, or guided support. Conversely, paying is unnecessary if you use only Apple devices and iCloud is reliable for your vault, or if you are willing to run and troubleshoot your own synchronization system.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not run two synchronization services on the same vault. Obsidian specifically warns that combining services such as Obsidian Sync and iCloud can cause conflicts or corruption.

What the current Obsidian Sync plans include
Obsidian lists two Sync tiers. Prices below are per user and are quoted in US dollars. Annual billing reduces the monthly equivalent compared with paying month to month.
| Plan | Annual-billing price | Monthly-billing price | Synced vaults | Total storage | Maximum file size | Version history |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sync Standard | $4 per month | $5 per month | 1 | 1 GB | 5 MB | 1 month |
| Sync Plus | $8 per month | $10 per month | 10 | 10 GB | 200 MB | 12 months |
The Plus tier also has an upgrade path to 100 GB. That matters if a vault contains many attachments or larger media files, although ordinary Markdown notes are usually much smaller than either plan’s file-size limit.
Obsidian advertises a seven-day refund window on its product page. Treat that as a short trial period rather than a substitute for a backup: test every device you intend to use during those seven days, and keep an independent copy of important notes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhich tier fits which vault?
- Choose Standard when you need one vault, modest attachment storage, and one month of rollback history.
- Choose Plus when you need several vaults, larger files, or a year of version history. The longer history is particularly useful for research, project records, or notes that change gradually over many months.
- Reconsider either tier if your vault regularly exceeds the storage or file-size limits, or if you need a no-subscription arrangement more than you need a managed service.
What paying for Sync actually buys
End-to-end encryption
E2EE is the strongest privacy option in Sync. Obsidian documents AES-256 encryption with scrypt key derivation and GCM. It states that, with E2EE enabled, no one—including the Obsidian team—can access the notes stored in the encrypted remote vault.
The trade-off is responsibility for the encryption password. Obsidian cannot recover it. If you lose that password, you cannot add another device to the encrypted remote vault. Store it in a reputable password manager and keep a secure offline recovery record. Do not assume that an account-password reset can restore an E2EE vault.
Standard encryption is different: the key is held by Obsidian and can be used to decrypt remote data. Use E2EE for confidential material, client information, personal journals, or anything for which provider-held decryption keys are unacceptable. Standard encryption may be simpler if recoverability by the provider matters more to you than holding the key yourself.

Recovery instead of simple mirroring
Sync includes version history and file recovery, not just a current copy of each file. The available rollback period depends on the plan: one month on Standard and 12 months on Plus. Deleted-file restoration and snapshots can turn an accidental edit or deletion into a recoverable event rather than a permanent loss.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →That recovery layer is a meaningful difference from a basic folder mirror. A mirror can faithfully replicate a mistaken deletion; a history-aware service gives you a way back. It is still not a complete backup strategy. Keep a separate export or backup because a synchronized error can otherwise propagate to every device.
Cross-platform operation
Sync is designed for a mixed device fleet. You can work offline and let changes merge when a connection returns, rather than requiring every device to be online at the same moment. This is the most straightforward route for people moving between Windows, macOS, iPhone, iPad, and Android.
The service also supports selective sync, configuration syncing, activity logs, and shared vaults. Selective sync helps avoid downloading every attachment to every device; configuration syncing can keep selected Obsidian settings aligned; activity logs make synchronization activity easier to inspect; and shared vaults support collaboration scenarios. Decide which settings and folders should travel to a small-screen device instead of enabling everything by default.
When Obsidian Sync is worth the subscription
You use Windows and iPhone or iPad together
This is the clearest case for paying. Apple’s native file-sync options are strongest inside the Apple ecosystem, while the documented alternatives have limitations on iOS. Sync gives you one supported workflow instead of stitching together platform-specific folders and workarounds.
You need recovery as well as synchronization
If your notes are work records, study material, project documentation, or a long-running knowledge base, the ability to restore an earlier version can justify the fee by itself. The value is not merely avoiding retyping; it is reducing the risk that a bad merge or deletion becomes your permanent state.

You want privacy without operating infrastructure
E2EE gives you a provider-managed service while keeping the decryption password in your hands. You do not have to maintain a server, open firewall ports, or keep a home computer awake. The password-management responsibility remains yours, but the day-to-day synchronization work is handled for you.
You want predictable behavior on several devices
A managed service is easier to standardize across a personal laptop, work computer, tablet, and phone than a collection of manually configured folders. That consistency is especially valuable when you do not want to diagnose why one device stopped receiving files.
When paying is probably not worthwhile
You are fully invested in Apple hardware
Obsidian recommends iCloud for macOS, iOS, and iPadOS. If every device is in that group and iCloud already works reliably for you, an additional Sync subscription may add little. You still need to keep the vault downloaded locally so cloud optimization does not remove files from the device when you are offline.
You are comfortable administering your own sync system
Syncthing and Git can avoid a recurring Sync charge. The saving comes with setup, maintenance, troubleshooting, and a greater need for disciplined backups. If you enjoy that control and understand the failure modes, the subscription may not provide enough extra value.
Your vault is simple and your risk is low
A small, single-device vault that is exported regularly does not need every feature in Sync. Paying for long history, shared vaults, or mixed-platform support makes less sense when none of those capabilities addresses a real problem.
Obsidian Sync alternatives compared
| Option | Best fit | Documented device coverage | Privacy and control | Recovery and history | Effort |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| iCloud Drive | Apple-only setups | macOS, iOS, and iPadOS; Windows use carries reliability warnings | Uses Apple’s cloud-storage model rather than Obsidian E2EE | Not presented as an Obsidian-style version-history service | Low inside Apple’s ecosystem |
| OneDrive | People already paying for a broader Microsoft cloud plan | Windows and macOS; Android functionality is limited; no official iOS vault support is documented | Uses the provider’s storage and account controls | Not presented as an Obsidian-style recovery layer | Low on supported desktop platforms, with mobile limitations |
| Google Drive | People already using Google storage on desktop or Android | Windows, macOS, and Android; iOS support is limited and a third-party solution is recommended there | Uses the provider’s storage and account controls | Not presented as an Obsidian-style recovery layer | Low on supported platforms, with extra work on iOS |
| Syncthing | Privacy-focused, self-managed users | Peer-to-peer synchronization between available devices | Decentralized and direct; you control the participating devices | Depends on your own backup and versioning plan | Higher; at least one device should be available for synchronization |
| Git with Working Copy | Users who want repository-based history and already understand Git | Git repositories such as GitHub, GitLab, or a self-hosted server; Working Copy is an iOS client | Control depends on the repository host or your server | Strong change history through commits | Highest; commits, pushes, and pulls are manual, and some Working Copy features require a paid in-app purchase |
Using iCloud instead of Obsidian Sync
iCloud is the simplest alternative when every device is a Mac, iPhone, or iPad. Obsidian documents it as the preferred choice for that combination. The important limitation is Windows: Obsidian warns that iCloud Drive on Windows can lead to duplicated files or corruption.

- 【Audio Recording】 Records audio simultaneously while you write, allowing you to sync your notes with the corresponding audio for context. and Clicking on the notes allows you to locate and play back the corresponding audio content.
Cloud optimization is another practical hazard. Keep the vault downloaded locally on each device that needs offline access. If the operating system offloads files to save space, Obsidian may not have the complete vault available when you are disconnected.

Choose one service for that vault, make a backup before switching, and allow the new arrangement to stabilize before opening the vault on every device.
Using OneDrive or Google Drive
OneDrive
OneDrive is documented as an option for Windows and macOS. Its Android functionality is limited, and Obsidian does not document official iOS vault support for this method. It can make economic sense when the storage is already included in a broader cloud plan, but the mobile limitations can outweigh that saving.
Google Drive
Google Drive is documented for Windows, macOS, and Android. iOS support is limited, and Obsidian recommends a third-party solution for an iPhone or iPad vault. Mark the vault’s files as available offline so cloud offloading does not leave a device with placeholders instead of the notes themselves.
These services are best viewed as storage-based alternatives, not drop-in replacements for every Sync feature. They may move the folder, but they do not automatically reproduce Sync’s plan-based version history, activity logs, selective-sync controls, or E2EE password model.
Using Syncthing without a subscription
Syncthing synchronizes devices directly over a network or the internet. That decentralized design appeals to people who want to avoid a central storage provider and keep control of the participating machines.

The operational requirement is availability: Syncthing works best when at least one device is always reachable. A laptop that is usually asleep cannot relay changes until it wakes. Plan which device will act as the dependable participant and monitor it like any other service you administer.
Obsidian notes that the official Android Syncthing app is no longer maintained and points users toward the community Syncthing-Fork. That maintenance status is important when choosing Android as part of the fleet. You remain responsible for installation, permissions, updates, connectivity, and backups.
Using Git and Working Copy
Git gives you a detailed, repository-based record of changes. You can host the repository on GitHub, GitLab, or your own server, and inspect or restore committed versions. On iOS, Working Copy provides a Git client; some of its features require a paid in-app purchase.
The trade-off is manual operation. Obsidian describes the workflow as commit, push, and pull. If you edit on two devices and forget to pull before working, you can create divergent histories that require Git knowledge to reconcile. Git is therefore a strong choice for users who already think in repositories, but a poor fit if you expect invisible background synchronization.
Git history is also not the same as an automatic backup. A change exists in the remote repository only after you commit and push it. Establish a routine that includes pulling before edits, committing meaningful changes, and pushing after a work session.
Can you sync Obsidian for free?
Yes, in the sense that you can use storage you already have—such as iCloud, OneDrive, or Google Drive—or operate Syncthing or Git without buying Obsidian Sync. “Free” does not mean feature-equivalent. The alternatives trade the subscription for platform restrictions, manual work, self-administration, or weaker recovery guarantees.
The most economical option depends on what you already pay for and which devices you own. An Apple-only user may incur no additional storage cost with iCloud. A Windows-and-Android user who already has Google Drive may accept its limitations. A privacy-focused technical user may prefer Syncthing. A version-control enthusiast may consider Git’s manual process worthwhile.
A practical decision framework
- List every device and operating system. Mixed Windows, macOS, iOS, iPadOS, and Android fleets favor Sync; Apple-only fleets make iCloud more viable.
- Classify the notes. If the vault contains sensitive or irreplaceable information, prioritize E2EE and a recovery plan rather than choosing solely on price.
- Estimate storage needs. Compare your attachment volume with Standard’s 1 GB and 5 MB per-file limits, or Plus’s 10 GB and 200 MB limits.
- Decide how much administration you will accept. Sync is background-managed; Syncthing requires available devices; Git requires regular commit, push, and pull actions.
- Choose one synchronization service per vault. Do not layer Sync, iCloud, Drive, or Syncthing over the same live folder.
- Test recovery before relying on the setup. Confirm that a test file appears on each device and that you can restore an earlier version or retrieve your independent backup.
| Your situation | Most sensible starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Mac, iPhone, and iPad only | iCloud | Obsidian recommends it for this Apple-only combination. |
| Windows plus iPhone or iPad | Obsidian Sync | It avoids iCloud’s documented Windows warnings and provides one cross-platform workflow. |
| Several vaults or larger attachments | Sync Plus | It raises the vault, storage, file-size, and history limits. |
| Privacy-focused technical user with always-available devices | Syncthing | It is decentralized and directly controlled, with more administration. |
| User who already manages repositories | Git with Working Copy on iOS | It provides strong commit history, but synchronization is manual. |
Safe migration and conflict prevention
Before changing services
- Close Obsidian on every device using the vault.
- Make a complete copy of the vault, including attachments and configuration files you intend to preserve.
- Choose the destination service and remove competing synchronization jobs for that vault.
- Confirm that the destination has enough storage and file-size capacity.
When enabling E2EE
- Create a unique encryption password.
- Save it in a password manager and in a separate secure offline record.
- Test adding a second device while the original device is still available.
- Do not discard the original local copy until synchronization and decryption have been verified.
After the first synchronization
- Open representative notes with attachments on each device.
- Test offline editing, then reconnect and verify that the change arrives on the other device.
- Check that deleted or changed test files can be recovered through the method you selected.
- Watch for duplicate files, repeated conflict copies, or missing attachments before moving your entire workflow over.
Bottom line: is Obsidian Sync worth paying for?
For a mixed-device user who values privacy, recovery, and minimal maintenance, Obsidian Sync is a rational subscription. Standard at $4 per month with annual billing ($5 month to month) covers one vault and modest storage; Plus at $8 annually billed per month ($10 monthly) is aimed at multiple vaults, larger files, and longer history. E2EE, selective synchronization, file recovery, and cross-platform support are the features that most clearly distinguish it from a basic cloud folder.
Skip the subscription when iCloud already handles an Apple-only setup, or when you deliberately prefer the control and lower recurring cost of Syncthing or Git. Whichever route you choose, use one synchronization service per vault, keep an independent backup, and treat encryption credentials as irreplaceable.
