Sometimes—but streaming with OBS does not automatically cause a major FPS drop. OBS needs GPU time to render and composite scenes, and encoding uses additional system resources. If a game is already consuming nearly all available GPU capacity, OBS may struggle to render smoothly; CPU or encoder limits can also be responsible. The right fix depends on which part of the stream is falling behind.
Which problem are you seeing?
“Dropped frames” can describe different symptoms, and the remedy depends on the one you have. OBS distinguishes performance problems from network connection problems.
- Game FPS falls when OBS is open: look first for overall system load or GPU contention. OBS needs GPU time to render the stream output, even when encoding is handled by a hardware encoder. OBS Encoding Performance Troubleshooting (June 12, 2021) identifies GPU overload as a possible cause.
- OBS rendering or encoding falls behind: check OBS’s performance or encoding status. GPU overload is one possibility, but another system bottleneck may be involved. Reduce the workload that corresponds to the bottleneck rather than changing settings at random.
- Network-dropped frames or disconnections: troubleshoot the connection to the ingest server and the bitrate relative to stable upload capacity. OBS says connection problems are extremely unlikely to be caused by OBS Studio itself. See OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting (September 30, 2024).
How to reduce OBS-related FPS drops
Try these adjustments in order, checking whether the symptom improves after each meaningful change. This helps preserve image quality and avoids unnecessary hardware purchases.

Cap the game’s frame rate at your monitor’s refresh rate or enable V-Sync. If performance is still unstable, lower the game’s graphics settings. The goal is to leave GPU capacity for OBS scene rendering, not simply to lower quality across the board. OBS lists these steps in its encoding performance guide.

2. On Windows, try running OBS as administrator
OBS says running the application as administrator can resolve some GPU-overload issues on Windows. This is a platform-specific troubleshooting step, not a general fix for every FPS or network problem.
3. Lower the stream’s output workload
Reduce output resolution first; if that is not enough, reduce frame rate. OBS specifically suggests trying 30 fps when 60 fps is not working. Lowering the base canvas resolution is a last resort because it can require repositioning and resizing sources in scenes.

4. Simplify scenes and sources
Remove or reduce costly sources, filters, and browser sources. Use media with a resolution appropriate to its displayed size, and consider splitting very large scene collections. Some sources can consume resources even while hidden, so hiding an item is not necessarily the same as removing its cost.

5. Change encoders only if encoding is the bottleneck
OBS generally recommends supported hardware encoders for performance because they move encoding work from the CPU to specialized hardware. Modern hardware encoders are described as having minimal performance impact, while earlier generations may trade image quality at the same bitrate for lower system impact. Hardware encoding does not eliminate the GPU work needed to render scenes, so it is not a universal fix for game FPS drops. See OBS Hardware Encoding (January 11, 2022).

6. If frames are being dropped on the network, troubleshoot the connection
For network-dropped frames, OBS recommends trying another ingest server, lowering bitrate to fit stable upload capacity and platform limits, checking network software and drivers, and using a wired connection where feasible. Dynamic bitrate can reduce quality to respond to connection conditions; it is a fallback, not a fix for the underlying connection problem. Follow the OBS connection troubleshooting guide.
When should you consider a hardware encoder?
A hardware encoder is worth considering when evidence points to CPU-limited encoding, not merely because game FPS drops while OBS is open. First try settings changes that address the observed bottleneck. Before relying on hardware encoding, check compatibility for your exact GPU, driver, operating system, OBS version, codec, and streaming platform.

OBS’s hardware-encoding guide describes these compatibility categories:
- NVIDIA NVENC: Windows and Linux support for GeForce 750 Ti / 900-series Maxwell or newer.
- AMD AMF: Windows and Linux, subject to compatible GPUs.
- Intel Quick Sync: Windows and Linux for Intel HD Graphics beginning with Core-i 2xxx; newer generations are recommended.
- Apple VideoToolbox: Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. The guide says Apple Silicon supports H.264 streaming and H.264, HEVC, and ProRes recording. In the documented configuration, VideoToolbox streaming on Intel Macs is unsupported because of constant-bitrate limitations.
These categories come from OBS’s hardware-encoding guide, published January 11, 2022. Verify current support for your specific setup rather than treating a listed hardware generation as a guarantee for every codec, driver, or platform.

Should you lower quality or upgrade hardware?
Match the tradeoff to the resource that is actually constrained:
| Observed bottleneck | First adjustments to try | Likely tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| GPU contention between the game and OBS rendering | Cap game FPS or enable V-Sync; then lower game graphics settings | Lower game frame rate or visual detail |
| OBS output workload | Lower output resolution, then frame rate if needed | Lower stream resolution or smoothness |
| Scene complexity | Reduce costly sources, filters, or browser sources; use appropriately sized media | Simpler scenes or fewer effects |
| CPU-limited encoding | Consider a supported hardware encoder after confirming compatibility | Encoder-dependent image-quality tradeoffs; hardware encoding still needs GPU scene rendering |
| Network connection | Try another ingest server, adjust bitrate to stable upload capacity, check network software or drivers, and use wired networking where feasible | Lower bitrate can reduce stream quality; dynamic bitrate may also reduce quality |
Settings and scene changes are the sensible first steps when they address the observed bottleneck. An upgrade is not established as necessary just because OBS and a game are running together.
