Short answer: no. Nintendo Switch Sports is not a flying game. Nintendo’s current official lineup names Basketball, Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton and Chambara, with no flying activity listed. That makes the absence of a flying mode an evidence-based inference from Nintendo’s feature list, rather than a direct Nintendo sentence saying “there is no flying mode.”
If a flying or Pilotwings-style activity is the reason you would buy it, skip this game for that purpose. It may still be worth buying if you want motion-controlled sports, local play, or Nintendo’s online sports modes, provided you have the required accessories and online membership for internet features.

What Nintendo’s official lineup actually says
Nintendo’s official Nintendo Switch Sports page presents the title as a Nintendo Switch game designed to bring sports to life through motion controls. Its listed activities are Basketball, Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton and Chambara. The list contains no aviation, flight, piloting or free-flying activity.
That distinction matters because the conclusion is based on what Nintendo currently lists as included content. Nintendo has not been quoted as issuing a separate statement that uses the exact words “Nintendo Switch Sports has no flying mode.” The practical buying conclusion is nevertheless clear: a feature not present in the publisher’s current sport lineup should not be treated as part of the game.

The eight listed sports, at a glance
| Sport | Listed by Nintendo | Update note on Nintendo’s feature page | Flying activity included? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basketball | Yes | Nintendo marks it with a software-update note. | Not listed |
| Golf | Yes | Nintendo marks it with a software-update note. | Not listed |
| Soccer | Yes | No separate update detail stated in the lineup. | Not listed |
| Volleyball | Yes | No separate update detail stated in the lineup. | Not listed |
| Bowling | Yes | No separate update detail stated in the lineup. | Not listed |
| Tennis | Yes | No separate update detail stated in the lineup. | Not listed |
| Badminton | Yes | No separate update detail stated in the lineup. | Not listed |
| Chambara | Yes | No separate update detail stated in the lineup. | Not listed |
The table is useful for resolving a common misunderstanding: an update marker does not imply a hidden flying mode. It only indicates that Nintendo identifies Basketball and Golf as software-update content on the feature page. None of the listed sports is described as flight-based.
What the Golf update added
Golf is part of the current lineup. Nintendo announced it as a free update on November 29, 2022. The update added 21 holes from the Wii Sports series and introduced online Survival Golf for up to eight players.
| Golf detail | Confirmed value |
|---|---|
| Update date | November 29, 2022 |
| Course content | 21 holes from the Wii Sports series |
| Online Survival Golf capacity | Up to eight players |
| Flight mode | Not part of the announced Golf content |
Golf can therefore make the package more attractive to someone who wants a broader sports collection, particularly for group play. It does not change the answer for a buyer whose requirement is flying gameplay.
Is it worthwhile for local or online sports?
The value question changes completely when the intended activity is one of Nintendo’s listed sports rather than flying. Nintendo presents the game for play in person or online. That gives you two broad use cases:
Local play
In-person play is the straightforward choice for a household, party or group sharing a console. The game’s controller configurations vary by sport, so the number of players you can accommodate depends on the Joy-Con hardware available and the activity selected. Nintendo’s product information does not establish a universal player count for every local sport, so do not assume that one controller arrangement applies to the entire collection.
Before inviting a group, identify the sport first and then check its on-screen controller prompt. A setup that works for a one-handed activity may not be the same one required for a two-controller activity. This is a practical reason to treat the eight sports as related but not interchangeable experiences.

Online play
Nintendo specifies three requirements for online features: a Nintendo Account, an active Nintendo Switch Online membership and internet access. Nintendo also notes that membership is unavailable in some countries, so the requirement and practical availability should be checked for your region.
The membership requirement applies to online features; the product is separately presented as supporting play in person. Nintendo’s materials do not establish a current subscription price in every market, so a buying calculation should use the price shown for your own account and country rather than an old figure from another region.
Online Survival Golf
The Golf update’s Survival Golf mode supports up to eight players online. That is a specific Golf feature, not a claim that every sport supports eight simultaneous online participants. Check the game’s current mode information for the activity you intend to play.

- Play with friends and family locally or online—in some sports, you and a friend can even team up on the same system to take on other teams online
Controller and accessory requirements
Nintendo Support lists different input arrangements depending on the sport. The supported configurations include paired Joy-Con controllers, a single Joy-Con and Joy-Con used with the Leg Strap. Nintendo also states that Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers are not compatible and that the software does not support handheld mode.
| Hardware or setup | What Nintendo’s support information establishes | Buying implication |
|---|---|---|
| Paired Joy-Con | Supported for some sport configurations. | Useful when an activity requires two Joy-Con or when multiple players need separate controllers. |
| Single Joy-Con | Supported for some sport configurations. | Can be sufficient for activities that use one controller per player or one-handed motion input. |
| Joy-Con plus Leg Strap | Used for supported Soccer play. | Relevant to Soccer only; it is not evidence of a flying mode. |
| Nintendo Switch Pro Controller | Not compatible, according to Nintendo Support. | Do not plan to play the software with a Pro Controller. |
| Handheld mode | Not supported, according to Nintendo Support. | You need compatible Joy-Con-based play rather than using the console as a handheld controller. |
What the Leg Strap does
The Leg Strap relates to some Soccer gameplay. Nintendo says it is required for certain Soccer play, and Nintendo Support explains how to switch to Leg-Strap Mode. The accessory changes the input method for that Soccer activity; it does not add aviation, flight or free-flying content.
Because Nintendo’s controller guidance is sport-specific, check the on-screen instructions and current support information before purchasing extra hardware. Do not assume that a setup suitable for Soccer, Bowling or Tennis will be the correct arrangement for every other activity.
Does the game include anything that feels like flying?
Nothing in Nintendo’s named lineup establishes an aerial sport, aircraft control, sky exploration or a Pilotwings-style activity. Some sports may involve a ball moving through the air, but that is not the same feature as controlling a plane or freely flying. If “flying mode” means any dedicated aviation or free-flight experience, the official list does not support that expectation.
This is also why the Leg Strap should not be read as a clue. It changes Soccer input for the supported mode; it is not a motion accessory for flight. Likewise, Golf’s 21-hole update expands the sports collection but does not introduce an aerial activity.

Who should buy Nintendo Switch Sports?
The most reliable way to judge the purchase is to compare your primary reason for buying with the content Nintendo confirms.
| Your main goal | Fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A flying, piloting or aviation activity | Poor fit | Nintendo’s listed sports do not include a flying activity. |
| A motion-controlled sports collection | Potentially good fit | The package contains eight named sports and supports in-person play. |
| Online Golf with a group | Potentially good fit | Survival Golf supports up to eight online players, subject to Nintendo Switch Online requirements. |
| Soccer using leg-motion input | Conditional fit | Some Soccer play requires the Leg Strap and the dedicated Leg-Strap Mode. |
| Playing with a Pro Controller | Poor fit | Nintendo Support says Pro Controllers are not compatible. |
| Playing exclusively in handheld mode | Poor fit | Nintendo Support says handheld mode is not supported. |
| Local family or party sessions | Potentially good fit | Nintendo presents the game for in-person play, with Joy-Con configurations that vary by sport. |
This framework prevents a common mistake: treating a game’s broad “sports” label as proof that it contains every sports-adjacent activity. The title can be a sensible purchase for motion-controlled competition while still being the wrong product for a very specific flight experience.
Launch content versus the current lineup
When comparing older videos, reviews or listings, pay attention to whether they describe the original release or the current feature page. Nintendo marks Basketball and Golf with software-update notes, and Golf was announced as a free update on November 29, 2022. That means an older launch-era description may not mention every activity now shown by Nintendo.
The update history still does not create a flying mode. It explains why Golf appears in the current lineup and identifies the added content precisely: 21 holes from the Wii Sports series and online Survival Golf for up to eight players. Use those figures as Golf-specific information, not as a general promise about all sports or future additions.
What to check before buying
Confirm the product you are searching for
The named product is the game itself: “Nintendo Switch Sports Nintendo Switch game” is the honest product description for a store or marketplace search. Nintendo presents both a buy option and packaged-game imagery on its official page. Availability, stock and price are not established here, so check the current listing in your country before paying.

- Challenge your family or friends and may the best player win
- Multiple game modes available: Quick match or Tournament / Team mode or Solo
- Explore a multitude of environments! Volcano / Desert / Snowy countries
- Unlock new costumes and choose to play with motion or buttons on NSW
Do not budget from an old price
No current street price, regional price table or review-consensus figure is established for this decision. Prices can vary by country, physical versus digital format, retailer and promotion. Use the live price shown by the retailer you intend to use, and separately account for any Nintendo Switch Online membership needed for online features.
Check your console and accessories
- Make sure you have compatible Joy-Con controllers for the sport and player arrangement you want.
- Do not rely on a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller; Nintendo Support lists it as incompatible.
- Do not expect handheld-mode play.
- If Soccer’s supported Leg-Strap activity is important, verify that the required strap and the correct in-game mode are available.
Check online eligibility
- Sign in with a Nintendo Account.
- Maintain an active Nintendo Switch Online membership for online features.
- Use an internet connection that is available in your region.
- Confirm country availability before assuming an online mode will work where you live.
Match the hardware to the people playing
For a solo purchase, verify that the Joy-Con arrangement for your preferred sport is available. For a household or party, count the compatible controllers before assuming everyone can join at once. Nintendo’s support information describes configurations by sport rather than giving one universal setup for the whole game, so the activity you choose should drive the hardware plan.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistake: interpreting “sports” as “includes flying”
Read the named lineup rather than relying on the category label. The confirmed activities are the eight sports in Nintendo’s feature list. A flight mode would need to be identified separately, and it is not.

Nintendo identifies Golf as free-update content announced on November 29, 2022. If you are comparing an older review, video or product description with the current game, distinguish launch coverage from the updated lineup.
Mistake: buying a Pro Controller for this title
Nintendo Support says Pro Controllers are not compatible. Buy or use the supported Joy-Con arrangement instead, based on the sport you intend to play.
Mistake: treating the Leg Strap as a general-purpose accessory
The Leg Strap is connected to some Soccer play. It does not unlock a hidden aviation mode or expand the game into a different genre. Consider it only if that Soccer input method is part of your plan.
Mistake: assuming every online mode has the same player count
The documented “up to eight players” figure applies to online Survival Golf. It should not be generalized to every sport or mode.

Mistake: assuming an update marker means unlimited future content
Nintendo’s update labels identify software-update content; they do not promise a particular future sport or a flight feature. Base the purchase on the sports currently listed and on the modes you can confirm for your region.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to make the final decision
- Write down the feature you actually want. If the answer is flying, piloting or aerial exploration, this game does not match the requirement established by Nintendo’s lineup.
- Choose the sports you would realistically play. Golf, Basketball, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton and Chambara are the confirmed options.
- Decide between local and online use. In-person play is supported; online features require a Nintendo Account, Nintendo Switch Online membership and internet access.
- Inventory your hardware. Plan around supported Joy-Con configurations, not a Pro Controller or handheld mode. Add the Leg Strap only for the Soccer activity that requires it.
- Check the current regional listing. Confirm the live price, edition, stock and online availability in your country rather than relying on an old article or imported listing.
- Separate must-haves from bonuses. Treat Golf’s 21 holes and eight-player Survival Golf as bonuses for people who want Golf, not as substitutes for an aviation mode.
Final verdict: Nintendo Switch Sports is not worth buying for a flying mode because Nintendo’s current official feature list does not include one. It can be worth buying for its motion-controlled sports collection, local sessions and supported online modes, with Golf’s 21-hole update and up-to-eight-player Survival Golf providing additional value for players who want those specific activities.
