Short answer: Nex Playground is worth considering for families with children about 5 and older who want short, active, multiplayer sessions in front of a TV. The US console is listed at $299 and includes five games. Most of the broader 60-plus-game library requires Play Pass, priced at $49 for three months or $89 for 12 months, so a first year with the annual pass is $388 before tax or discounts. It is a focused family activity device, not a replacement for a traditional console with deep solo games.

What Nex Playground is—and the subscription question answered

Nex Playground is a camera-based game console. It connects to a television over HDMI, watches players through a wide-angle camera, and translates body movement into game controls. The included remote handles setup, menus, and game selection; current multiplayer games do not require additional gameplay controllers.

After buying the hardware, you can play the five included starter games without Play Pass. Nex says Play Pass unlocks a catalog of more than 60 active games, with new games and updates added monthly. The subscription is therefore optional for using the console, but it is the normal way to access most of its library. TechRadar reports that individual game purchases are not available, so you cannot build a paid catalog one title at a time.

What comes in the box

  • Nex Playground console with its motion-tracking camera
  • Remote control for navigation and setup
  • HDMI cable
  • Power cable
  • Magnetic privacy cover for the camera
  • Five starter games: Fruit Ninja, Starri, Party Fowl, Whack-a-Mole Deluxe, and Go Keeper

The starter pack is important to the value calculation. It gives a family something to try without an immediate recurring payment, although five titles may feel limited if the console becomes a daily habit.

How the motion system works in a living room

Camera placement and floor area

Nex recommends roughly 6 feet by 6 feet of clear play space and a camera position from which it can see the players clearly. In practice, move coffee tables, ottomans, toys, and low lamps out of the tracking area before a session. The camera needs a reasonably unobstructed view of bodies, not just faces or hands.

Measure the intended space with people standing in it rather than assuming the area in front of the television is large enough. A narrow room, a wall-mounted television with furniture directly below it, or strong backlighting can make positioning difficult. The console is best suited to a living room, playroom, or other area where temporary movement is acceptable.

Controllers and multiplayer

The remote is not a motion-game controller. Use it to select games and operate menus, then put it down while playing. Nex’s current multiplayer games use camera-based movement rather than a separate gamepad for each person, which lowers the equipment barrier for siblings, parents, and guests.

  • Transform your living room into an active play space with built-in camera and AI motion tracking that lets up to 4 players use natural body movements - no controllers needed.
  • Includes 5 free games (Fruit Ninja, Starri, Whac-a-Mole, Go Keeper, and Party Fowl) with access to 30+ more games through Play Pass subscription.
  • Play with beloved characters including Barbie, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Peppa Pig, Elmo, Miraculous Ladybug, Gabby's Dollhouse, and Kung Fu Panda.

  • Get new content and seasonal updates every month, offering year-round entertainment across various genres from dance to fitness to sports.

A practical first setup

  1. Place the Playground where its camera has a clear view of the planned 6-by-6-foot area.
  2. Connect the console to the television with HDMI and connect power.
  3. Turn on the television and follow the on-screen setup using the included remote.
  4. Clear the floor and test tracking with one player before inviting a group.
  5. Use the privacy cover whenever the camera is not needed.
  6. Download the games you plan to use while connected; Nex says downloaded games can then be played offline.

Exact menu wording can change with software updates, but the physical requirements remain the same: power, HDMI, a visible play area, and enough room for players to move safely.

Game catalog: what you get free and what Play Pass adds

The five included games

Fruit Ninja and Whack-a-Mole Deluxe use quick arm movements and are easy to explain to guests. Starri is rhythm-oriented. Party Fowl is built around group activities, while Go Keeper asks players to react as a goalkeeper. Together they demonstrate the console’s main use case: short, physical rounds that people can understand without a long tutorial.

They are a useful trial, not a guarantee of unlimited replay value. Families should rotate players and assess whether the included set remains entertaining before committing to Play Pass.

What Play Pass includes

Nex describes Play Pass as access to more than 60 active games, including recognizable properties such as Bluey, Barbie, NFL FLAG, Sesame Street, and PAC-MAN. Nex says new games and updates are added monthly. The exact catalog can change, so treat “60-plus” as a current catalog description rather than a permanent count.

The subscription model makes the annual option the lower monthly equivalent for families that expect regular play: $89 for 12 months is about $7.42 per month when spread across the year, while $49 for three months is about $16.33 per month. The quarterly pass is the lower-commitment test, but it costs more per month and requires renewal or another purchase if the family continues.

Usage pattern Most sensible starting point Why
Curious family, uncertain interest Use the five included games first No subscription decision is needed immediately
Holiday, party, or short-term visit Three-month Play Pass Shorter commitment despite the higher monthly equivalent
Weekly or several-times-a-week play Annual Play Pass Lower monthly equivalent and uninterrupted access
Only one or two favorite games matter Check the included titles before buying Individual game purchases are not offered, according to TechRadar

Content pipeline and announced titles

Hasbro and Nex have announced a games collaboration that includes Hungry Hungry Hippos: Move N’ Munch, with Connect 4 and Candy Land adaptations also described. An announcement is not proof that every title is currently downloadable, so check the in-device catalog for present availability. Hasbro senior vice president Eugene Evans called the platform “a groundbreaking product that brings families together all over the world” and described it as a way to engage with Hasbro brands. That is a promotional statement, not independent evidence of health outcomes or guaranteed game quality.

Age, physical ability, and safety

Nex recommends the Playground for ages 5 and up. It says some 3- and 4-year-olds may enjoy more games with an adult or older sibling, while warning that certain physical challenges can be difficult for children under 6. Age labels should therefore be treated as a starting point, not a substitute for supervision.

  • Keep the play zone free of hard-edged furniture and loose objects.
  • Give younger children a one-player introduction so they learn where the camera expects them to stand.
  • Supervise games that involve jumping, quick direction changes, or competition between siblings.
  • Stop if a player is tired, unsteady, or repeatedly leaving the marked area.
  • Use the console as light activity and entertainment, not as a medical or fitness program.

Privacy, offline play, and account expectations

What Nex claims about video

Nex says motion tracking happens locally on the device and that player video is not processed in the cloud. It also discloses that some games temporarily record video locally for replays or highlights and says those recordings are not saved. These are the manufacturer’s statements, not an independent security audit.

The magnetic privacy cover provides a physical way to block the camera when the console is idle. Make it part of the household routine, especially in rooms where people may change clothes or walk past the television.

Ads, chat, and offline sessions

Nex says its games contain no ads, microtransactions, or chat features. It also says games can be played offline after download. Offline capability is useful for a playroom with unreliable Wi-Fi or for reducing the need for an internet connection during a session, but initial setup and downloads still require connectivity.

Real-world strengths and limitations

Why families may like it

  • Fast onboarding: The camera interface avoids pairing several controllers and is approachable for guests who do not usually play video games.
  • Shared activity: Parents, siblings, and visitors can play together in the same room instead of taking turns on a single handheld device.
  • Low friction catalog: The five starter games let you test the concept without buying a pass on day one.
  • Predictable child-facing environment: Nex says there are no ads, microtransactions, or chat features in its games.
  • Offline after download: A downloaded game does not need to stay online during play, according to Nex.

Where expectations should be lower

  • Limited depth: TechRadar describes the games as best for short sessions, parties, and light fitness rather than long, complex campaigns.
  • Visual quality: The review notes less polished graphics than mainstream consoles.
  • Performance variability: TechRadar reports performance issues in some titles.
  • Subscription dependence: The wider library generally requires Play Pass, and there is no stated option to purchase individual games.
  • Space requirement: A family without a clear 6-by-6-foot area may spend more time rearranging the room than playing.

US, UK, and Ireland pricing

Do not combine regional prices into one calculation. Nex’s FAQ dated June 15, 2026 lists the following starting prices for the UK and Ireland:

Region Console starting price Annual Play Pass Quarterly Play Pass
United States $299 $89 $49
United Kingdom £269 £90 £45
Ireland €319 €99 €49

The UK and Ireland figures are regional starting prices, not currency conversions of the US offer. The same FAQ identifies the starter pack as PEGI 3 and some Play Pass titles as PEGI 7. Rating labels and catalog availability can differ by region, so check the local product page and the rating shown for each game.

Who should buy Nex Playground?

It is a strong fit when

  • Your children are around 5 or older and can follow movement and safety instructions.
  • You want active, shared play in short sessions rather than a deep solo gaming library.
  • You have a permanent or easily cleared 6-by-6-foot area facing the TV.
  • You are comfortable starting with five games and adding an annual pass only if the catalog earns regular use.
  • You value a camera system with a physical privacy cover and the manufacturer’s local-processing and no-chat claims.

Look elsewhere when

  • You expect cinematic graphics, long campaigns, or highly competitive individual play.
  • Your room cannot safely accommodate moving players.
  • You want to own individual games permanently instead of maintaining a catalog subscription.
  • Your children are too young to move safely in the recommended area without close supervision.
  • You are buying primarily for measured fitness results; no independent outcome statistic is established here.

A value test before you order

  1. Measure the room. Mark a roughly 6-by-6-foot rectangle and confirm that players can move without hitting furniture.
  2. Count likely players. Decide whether the console will serve one child, siblings, parents, or parties; its value rises when several people use the same hardware.
  3. Try the included set first. Five games are enough to test tracking, age fit, and replay appeal.
  4. Price the commitment honestly. Use $299 plus $89 for a first-year US estimate if you expect regular Play Pass use, and remember that taxes and discounts are extra.
  5. Check the live catalog. Confirm that the properties and game types your family wants are currently available in your region.
  6. Review retailer terms. Nex says a Play Pass bought directly from it may be fully refunded within 14 days of activation under its conditions. Purchases through Amazon or other retailers follow those sellers’ policies, and retailer-bought codes may take longer to arrive than in-device activation.

Bottom line: is Nex Playground worth it?

Nex Playground is a sensible buy when the goal is convenient, active group entertainment for young children and families. The $299 US starter system gives you five games without a subscription, while the $89 annual Play Pass makes the larger catalog affordable for households that play regularly. The trade-off is clear: you pay for a camera-based device, need a safe open area, and accept lighter game depth, occasional performance limitations, and a recurring fee for most of the catalog.

Start with the included games, verify that your room and children fit the requirements, and add Play Pass only when the broader catalog justifies the ongoing cost. Families seeking deep individual adventures or console-quality graphics should not treat Nex Playground as their only gaming system.
