Necesse is worth buying if you want a flexible survival-crafting sandbox that combines top-down exploration, action combat, equipment progression, and settlement management. Its strongest value comes from developing one evolving world, experimenting with builds and rules, and playing cooperatively. Replayability is more personal: procedural generation, adjustable difficulty, different settlement designs, and multiplayer can support many sessions, but some players feel they have seen most of the meaningful content in one long world.
The best way to judge Necesse is not by an advertised hour count. Ask whether you enjoy alternating between expeditions and improving a settlement, and whether you want a tightly authored campaign or an open-ended sandbox.
What Necesse is
Necesse is a top-down action-adventure RPG and survival-crafting game set in a procedurally generated world. You explore for resources, fight monsters and bosses, mine ores, craft equipment, complete quests, and build a settlement populated by recruitable settlers. Those settlers can operate farms and workshops, produce useful resources, and help turn a temporary base into a functioning community.

- Adventure: leave your settlement to discover new areas, gather materials, clear dungeons, and defeat bosses.
- Colony management: design buildings, assign settlers to useful work, produce supplies, trade with neighboring settlements, and build defenses.
Neither side is presented as a single mandatory route. The official Steam description emphasizes that players can choose how to spend time in the world, including customizing difficulty and several gameplay rules. You can make settlement raids part of the experience or turn them off, depending on whether you want additional pressure.

Necesse reached full release on October 16, 2025, after entering Early Access on December 12, 2019. Those dates matter because older reviews and guides may describe an earlier version. The official community page has also published version 1.3.3 notes dated August 25 and says the developers are working on the next major update. Update status is time-sensitive, so check the live Steam pages before purchasing or starting a multiplayer server.
How the core gameplay loop works
A typical session moves through a repeating but flexible cycle:
- Prepare at home. Organize equipment, craft tools and weapons, harvest or process supplies, and make sure your settlers have productive workstations.
- Choose an objective. You might search for a resource, investigate a dungeon, answer a quest, expand the settlement, or prepare for a boss.
- Explore and fight. Travel through the generated world, gather materials, defeat enemies, and bring valuable finds back to safety.
- Convert discoveries into progress. Smelt ores, craft stronger equipment, unlock or construct new facilities, and improve your settlement’s ability to support the next expedition.
- Set a new goal. The improved base makes deeper exploration practical, while new materials and encounters create reasons to leave again.
This loop is appealing to players who like switching between combat and construction instead of committing to only one activity. A player who prefers building can spend more time arranging production and defenses; a player who prefers action can use the settlement as a launch point for expeditions.

Exploration, dungeons, and combat
Procedurally generated worlds
The world is procedurally generated and described by the store listing as infinite. Each world can therefore provide a different geography, resource distribution, and route between points of interest. Procedural generation gives a new save a different shape, but it does not automatically guarantee that every run feels like a completely new game. Your enjoyment depends on how much you value discovery and adaptation.
Dungeons and bosses
Dungeons and boss encounters provide major reasons to improve equipment and prepare your settlement. They turn material gathering into a clear progression question: do you have the tools, supplies, and survivability needed for the next expedition? Boss progression supplies structure without removing the sandbox nature of the rest of the world.
Equipment and playstyle choices
Necesse supports multiple equipment setups and playstyles rather than requiring one permanent build. Trying a different approach can change how you handle enemies and what you prioritize while gathering. No fixed list of classes or definitive ranking of builds is established here, so treat equipment experimentation as a flexibility feature rather than a promise that every setup is equally deep.

Quests and repeatable expeditions
Quests add directed objectives to an otherwise open-ended world. Expeditions can also be repeated for resources, encounters, or preparation. The combination lets you alternate between a specific task and self-directed projects such as expanding a settlement or redesigning production areas.

The settlement system is the feature that most clearly separates Necesse from a survival game focused only on personal crafting. You recruit settlers, provide places for them to live and work, and use farms and workshops to create a resource pipeline. Once established, the settlement can continue producing useful materials while you are away exploring.
What settlers contribute
- They can work farms and workshops.
- They contribute resources that reduce the need to perform every production task personally.
- They make settlement layout and infrastructure meaningful rather than purely decorative.
- They give you a reason to defend and improve a permanent home.
Designing a settlement
Settlement design is one of the clearest sources of variation between worlds. You can organize housing, production, storage, farms, and defenses into compact or spacious layouts. A practical design keeps frequently used facilities close together; a themed or sprawling design may take longer to build but can make the world feel more personal. Because settlement layout is player-driven, two people can progress through similar adventures while having very different bases.
Defense and raids
Players can build defenses and customize whether settlement raids occur. Leaving raids enabled adds an additional management problem: a settlement must be productive and defensible, not merely attractive. Turning raids off removes that pressure and can suit players who want to concentrate on exploration, construction, or story-like progression.
Trading and neighboring settlements
The store description also mentions trading with neighboring settlements. This broadens the settlement role beyond self-sufficiency and gives developed communities an economic connection to the wider world.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMultiplayer: solo, co-op, PvP, and servers
Steam lists single-player, online co-op, LAN co-op, online PvP, and LAN PvP. Cooperative settlement building is an explicit part of the game’s pitch: friends can share resources, divide responsibilities, explore together, and team up against bosses. One player might focus on farming and workshops while another scouts, mines, or prepares combat equipment.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
The official description also says players can establish a dedicated server with hundreds of other players. That is a listed capacity claim, not a guarantee that every server will sustain a particular population or performance level. Actual results depend on hosting, hardware, network quality, configuration, and the version being used.
Ways a group can organize play
- Shared settlement: everyone contributes to one home and agrees on storage, construction, and defense priorities.
- Role division: players specialize temporarily in farming, crafting, exploration, or combat, then exchange resources.
- Cooperative boss progression: the group prepares equipment and supplies before tackling major encounters together.
- Competing colonies: PvP rules allow groups to build separate settlements and compete, if that is the experience they want.
Version coordination matters
The official version 1.3.3 announcement says servers and hosts need to update. Before joining a friend’s world or starting a dedicated server, have everyone install the same game version and apply host or server updates. A mismatch can prevent connections or create compatibility problems after a patch.
How replayable is Necesse?
Replayability comes from several systems working together rather than from a fixed sequence of campaigns.
Procedural world generation
A new seed changes the shape of exploration and the location of resources and activities. Starting over can therefore feel different, especially if you enjoy adapting to a new map rather than following a memorized route.
Custom rules and difficulty
The game lets you customize difficulty and multiple gameplay rules. You can adjust the type of challenge you want, including whether settlement raids occur. A higher-pressure world can make preparation and defenses central; a gentler configuration can make building and discovery more relaxed.
Build and equipment experimentation
Different equipment choices alter how you approach combat and which materials you value. Replaying with another setup can provide a reason to revisit familiar areas without claiming that every build creates a wholly separate campaign.

Settlement redesign
A second world may be worthwhile simply because you want to construct a different settlement. Some players enjoy optimizing production and defenses; others prefer a visual or role-play-oriented layout. This is meaningful replay for builders even when the broad progression path is familiar.
Co-op groups
Playing with a new group changes the pace and division of labor. A solo player handles every task; a coordinated group can specialize, explore farther earlier, or choose competitive colonies instead of one shared base.
Workshop content
Steam lists Steam Workshop support as a platform feature. Mods can potentially refresh a world or change how you play, but mod quality, maintenance, and compatibility vary. The available evidence does not establish a specific mod list or guarantee that a particular mod will work after an update.
What happens after you beat the game?
There is no single, independently verified completion-time or post-game-hour figure that can be applied to everyone. “Beating” the main boss progression does not necessarily end a sandbox world, but the amount of meaningful activity left depends on your goals.
After major progression, possible directions include:
- finishing quests and optional objectives you postponed;
- expanding or rebuilding the settlement;
- improving production chains and defenses;
- collecting equipment and trying another playstyle;
- undertaking repeatable expeditions for resources or encounters;
- starting a new seed with different rules;
- continuing with a cooperative group or trying a competitive colony setup;
- experimenting with compatible Workshop content.
Players disagree about how substantial this phase feels. In a recent r/Necesse discussion, some respondents described a lot to explore and said mods could renew the game. Others said they could complete most activities in one long playthrough and would restart mainly for a different settlement layout, build, or world seed. These are individual perspectives, not survey results, so use them to identify your own preference rather than to predict a universal number of hours.

Necesse compared with the type of game you want
Necesse is a strong match when your priority is a blend of systems. Use these questions to test the fit before buying:
- Do you want top-down action? Exploration and combat are viewed from above rather than through a first-person or third-person camera.
- Do you want settlement management alongside survival? Settlers, farms, workshops, trading, and defenses are central optional activities.
- Do you want multiplayer flexibility? Single-player, online and LAN co-op, and online and LAN PvP are listed features.
- Do you enjoy procedural exploration? New worlds change geography and discovery, but the underlying progression themes remain recognizable.
- Do you need many distinct campaign runs? Replay value is more about settings, builds, settlements, seeds, and groups than a sequence of radically different authored stories.
- Are you looking for a tightly scripted campaign? The game’s store presentation emphasizes a sandbox with player-directed goals, not a short linear adventure.
Price, reviews, and release context
When accessed in 2026, the Steam page displayed a price of €14.99 in its regional currency context. Price, discounts, and currency vary by region and can change, so treat that figure as a dated storefront snapshot rather than a permanent worldwide price.
The same snapshot showed 94% positive among 12,591 English-language reviews and 86% positive among 265 recent reviews. Review totals and percentages move over time, and the recent-review figure is based on a much smaller sample than the all-time English-language total. These numbers indicate favorable reception on that date, but they cannot decide whether the specific combination of settlement management and exploration suits you.
Necesse is sold as a digital Steam product in the listing covered here. No physical edition was established in the available information.
System requirements and controller support
The listed minimum Windows specification calls for a 64-bit operating system, 4 GB of RAM, and 500 MB of storage. The store page warns that some Intel graphics drivers can cause regular crashes. Requirements and compatibility notes can change, and the game also lists macOS and Linux requirements, so check the current Steam page for your operating system before installing.
Steam lists full controller support. A controller is optional rather than required; keyboard and mouse remain an alternative. No particular controller model is established as necessary.
Practical buying decision
Buy Necesse when these statements sound like you
- You enjoy gathering, crafting, and combat but also want a settlement that develops between expeditions.
- You are happy to set your own goals after the major boss progression.
- You want to tune difficulty and rules, including the option to disable settlement raids.
- You plan to play co-op and can coordinate versions with your group.
- You like experimenting with equipment, world seeds, and settlement layouts.
Think twice when these statements sound like you
- You want a heavily scripted campaign with a fixed sequence of story missions.
- You expect every new run to contain a completely different set of mechanics and narrative content.
- You need an independently verified “typical” completion time before deciding; none is established here.
- You dislike managing production, settlers, storage, or base defenses.
- You want a guaranteed high-population server experience rather than a listed capacity that depends on hosting conditions.
A low-risk way to start
- Check the current Steam price, supported operating system, and version notes for your region.
- Decide whether you want raids and other pressure systems enabled before creating a world.
- If playing with friends, agree on a host or dedicated server and update every client and server to the same version.
- Set an initial goal such as establishing food production, preparing for a first dungeon, or recruiting useful settlers.
- Reassess after you have experienced both sides of the loop: at least one meaningful expedition and one settlement upgrade.
Verdict
Necesse is a good purchase for players who want “adventure plus colony management” in one sandbox. Its procedural worlds, customizable rules, equipment choices, settlement design, Workshop support, and multiplayer modes provide several ways to extend a world. The recommendation is less certain for buyers who want a tightly authored campaign or a replay structure built around many fundamentally different runs. At the €14.99 regional price shown in the 2026 Steam snapshot, the game offers a particularly compelling fit when you already know you enjoy open-ended progression and intend to build with friends, but verify the live price and update status before checkout.
