Sudden shutdowns, random restarts, and unreliable startup can point to a failing or undersized desktop power supply (PSU), but none proves the PSU is at fault. Overheating, graphics-card instability, loose power connections, and driver problems can look similar. Start with the failure pattern and visible connections; use basic PSU tests only as screening, and do not open the unit.

Which symptoms can point to a failing PSU?

A PSU problem becomes more plausible when a PC abruptly loses power or reboots during demanding work, or when it struggles to start. These are clues rather than a diagnosis: graphics-card problems, excess heat, cabling, and software issues can produce overlapping symptoms. Seasonic’s symptom guide describes these patterns and their alternatives.

What you notice What it may suggest What to check
Shutdown or restart during a game, render, or other heavy workload Power demand, a transient response, or PSU protection may be involved CPU and GPU temperatures, recent upgrades, GPU connector seating, and whether the failure repeats under the same workload
Problems began after a GPU upgrade The new system demand or a power-connector issue may have exposed a limitation GPU seating and power connections, required connectors, and the PSU specifications
Visual artifacts, driver resets, crashes, or unstable GPU clocks while the PC stays on Graphics-card or driver trouble may be more likely than a complete loss of PSU output GPU drivers and temperatures, and whether the system itself loses power
Unreliable startup or shutdown during boot The PSU is one possible cause AC lead, PSU switch, and motherboard, CPU, and GPU connections

No symptom in this table uniquely identifies a failed PSU. A workload-specific failure can also involve heat or a poorly seated cable.

What should you check before testing the PSU?

  1. Describe the pattern. Note whether the problem happens at startup, at idle, or during a repeatable game or rendering workload. Record whether it started after a PSU or GPU change. Seasonic recommends considering timing, repeatability, upgrades, system logs, temperatures, and cable seating.
  2. Check external power. Make sure the AC lead is firmly connected and the PSU’s rear switch is on. These checks establish whether the unit is receiving power; they do not prove it is healthy.
  3. Inspect accessible connections with the PC powered off. Check that motherboard, CPU, and GPU power connectors are fully seated and show no obvious damage. Do not open the PSU. For a GPU using a 12V-2×6 or 12VHPWR connector, check that it is seated and avoid a sharp bend close to the plug; Seasonic identifies seating and routing as possible instability factors.
  4. Look for heat or graphics clues. Check CPU and GPU temperatures and note artifacts or driver resets. These observations can help distinguish a graphics or thermal issue, but do not rule out a PSU problem.
  5. Reproduce cautiously. If the failure occurs during a particular workload, observe whether it repeats and note temperatures and system behavior. Avoid aggressive simultaneous CPU and GPU stress tests as a first diagnostic; a repeatable crash still does not identify the PSU on its own.

What can a PSU tester or jumper test establish?

A paper-clip or jumper test checks whether a PSU starts in a minimal setup. It does not establish that the unit can deliver stable power under the PC’s full workload. Corsair’s PSU testing instructions warn that incorrect pin-jumper connections can cause injury or damage. Do not guess pin locations; follow the exact instructions for the PSU model and proceed only if you are comfortable doing so.

A PSU tester can report basic outputs, but its result is not a full-load evaluation. Corsair notes that some testers may flag a power-good (PG) error with newer ATX12V revisions, and optional -12 V readings can be misinterpreted. Seasonic describes its tester procedure as basic and recommends manufacturer service for a more precise examination.

Fan behavior is especially easy to misread. A PSU with zero-RPM or hybrid fan operation may not spin its fan at low loads, and fanless models have no fan to observe. A fan that stays still is not, by itself, proof of failure.
