Yes. MTG Arena is free to download and play, and you do not have to spend money to access its core game. Wizards of the Coast describes purchases as optional. You can build a collection with earned rewards, use gold to enter some events, and progress along the free Set Mastery track. Spending money mainly adds convenience, extra rewards, event currency, or cosmetics rather than removing a paywall.
The important distinction is between gold, which is earned primarily through play, and gems, which can be purchased or earned. Once those currencies, the two Mastery tracks, and event fees are separated, Arena’s free-to-play model is much easier to understand.
Is MTG Arena free to play?
MTG Arena is free to download on desktop and mobile. You can install it, create an account, complete the introductory content, play matches, earn rewards, and continue progressing without buying a starter bundle, card packs, or a subscription.

In practical terms, Arena offers free access to the game itself while selling optional ways to accelerate collection growth, unlock an additional reward track, enter events with purchased currency, or obtain cosmetics.

Free-to-play does not mean every item is immediately available. Competitive formats have different card requirements, event entries can cost currency, and collecting a large number of cards takes time. It does mean that the game does not require an upfront payment before you can play normal matches or begin earning progression rewards.
What can you do without spending money?
A new player can use the free account to learn the rules, complete introductory activities, play constructed matches, earn experience, collect cards and packs from rewards, and participate in selected events. The free Set Mastery track remains available alongside the optional paid track.
The most useful free-to-play routes are:
- Play matches and complete quests to earn gold and Set Mastery experience.
- Use gold on packs, cosmetics, or eligible events instead of buying gems.
- Enter free-entry activities when they are available, such as Midweek Magic.
- Save gold for a draft if you want to turn earned currency into both drafted cards and event rewards.
- Claim the base Set Mastery rewards as you gain experience during the set’s progression period.
The pace is slower than paying for every available shortcut, but the basic game loop is accessible without a cash purchase. No verified source establishes a universal daily gold total or a guaranteed time required to complete a set track, so treat any precise “free account” timetable as dependent on play habits, quests, wins, event choices, and the current set.

Arena’s economy is easier to manage when you treat gold and gems as separate tools rather than interchangeable money. Wizards identifies gold as an earned currency and gems as a currency that can be purchased or earned. Both can pay for certain game content, but they enter your account in different ways.
| Currency | How it is obtained | What it can be used for | What to remember |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gold | Games, quests, wins, and events | Packs, draft events, and cosmetics | It is the principal earn-as-you-play currency. |
| Gems | Purchases or gameplay rewards | Event entries, packs, and cosmetics | Gems are the currency directly linked to store spending. |
Gold: the main free progression currency
Gold is the currency a player can accumulate through ordinary play. The official description lists games, quests, wins, and events as ways to earn it. You can then spend gold on card packs, draft entries, and cosmetic items.
That makes gold the clearest answer to the question, “Can I play Arena without buying packs?” You can choose packs with earned gold, or redirect that gold toward an event such as Quick Draft. The trade-off is opportunity cost: gold spent on one option cannot be spent on another, so decide whether your immediate goal is opening packs, collecting cards through drafting, entering a limited event, or buying a cosmetic.
Do not plan around an assumed daily income. Quest values, event rewards, and available activities can change, and the supplied official material does not establish a single guaranteed daily or weekly amount.
Gems: purchasable, but not purchase-only
Gems can be bought in the store, but Wizards also says they can be earned. They are accepted for event entries, packs, and cosmetics. This gives paying players a faster route to certain purchases, while free players may accumulate gems through eligible rewards and events.
Because gems are also earnable, “the game sells gems” does not mean “every gem must be bought.” Conversely, earning some gems does not make every premium option free or immediately affordable. Before spending, check the current in-client price and reward terms for the item or event you are considering.
Can you play MTG Arena without buying packs?
Yes. Buying packs is optional. You can receive packs and other collection rewards through progression, use earned gold to purchase additional packs, or enter draft events where the cards you select become part of your collection.
Whether packs or drafts are better for you depends on your objective:

What is Set Mastery, and do you need the Mastery Pass?
The free Set Mastery track
Set Mastery is the baseline progression system. You earn experience through play and receive rewards along the base track. This track is available to everyone; it is not locked behind a purchase.
For a player who never spends money, Set Mastery is the central long-term progression path. Playing regularly advances the track, while quests, matches, and events provide the activities that move your account forward. The exact reward list is tied to the current set, so do not assume that one set’s levels or prizes will be identical to the next set’s.
The optional Mastery Pass
The Mastery Pass adds a second reward track. Wizards describes it as “an optional way for players to earn additional rewards through Set Mastery.” Buying it does not unlock the game itself; it unlocks extra prizes associated with the same progression period.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Current-set examples include packs, individual card rewards, gold, gems, event tokens, and cosmetics. The mix is set-specific. For example, the published Reality Fracture information lists those types of rewards for that set’s track; it should not be treated as a promise about later releases.
The current price of the Mastery Pass is not established by the available official material here, so do not rely on an assumed price or a universal break-even calculation. Evaluate it using four questions:
- How much of the track will you actually complete? A pass purchased late in a set period may provide less practical value than one purchased before you play most of the track.
- Which rewards matter to you? Packs, gold, gems, event tokens, cards, and cosmetics have different value depending on your goals.
- Do you prefer collection growth or appearance items? A player focused on building decks may value cards and currency more than cosmetics.
- Are you comfortable with set-specific uncertainty? The reward lineup changes with the set, so inspect the current in-client track before paying.
You can therefore play Arena indefinitely with only the free track. The pass is an optional upgrade for players who expect to play enough to claim the additional rewards and who consider the current lineup worthwhile.
How Quick Draft demonstrates the free-to-play model
Quick Draft is a concrete example of earned currency funding a substantial game mode. Wizards lists the entry fee as 5,000 gold or 750 gems. A player can therefore enter with gold earned through play rather than paying cash for gems.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDuring the event, you draft cards and keep the cards you drafted. You also receive additional rewards based on wins. The event combines collection building with gameplay rewards, which is why it can appeal to players who would rather spend gold on an experience than simply open packs.
- Accumulate the required currency. Save 5,000 gold or obtain 750 gems.
- Open the current event listing in Arena. Confirm that the event is available and review the displayed entry fee and reward details.
- Enter Quick Draft. Use the listed currency option shown by the client.
- Draft your cards. The cards you select are retained in your collection according to the event’s rules.
- Play the event matches. Your wins determine additional rewards under the current event structure.
Event terms can change, so treat 5,000 gold or 750 gems as the published Quick Draft entry example, not a permanent guarantee for every future draft event. Check the in-game listing immediately before spending.
What is Midweek Magic?
Midweek Magic is an official example of a free-entry activity. Wizards’ getting-started FAQ describes it as having no entry cost and offering cosmetic items.

This makes it useful for players who want to participate in an event without first saving gold or buying gems. The available schedule and exact reward details should be checked in the client, because the cited description does not establish an evergreen timetable or a single permanent cosmetic reward.

Do you have to spend money to play competitively?
No upfront purchase is required to play the game, but competitive deck building can take time. Constructed formats use cards from the relevant format, and a free account must acquire the cards needed for a chosen deck through rewards, packs, drafting, crafting systems, or other in-game progression.
Spending can shorten the collection-building process, but it does not replace learning the format, choosing a deck, or playing matches. A non-spending player can prioritize one format, save resources for cards that support that plan, and use free progression before branching into several archetypes. A player who attempts to build every possible deck immediately will face a larger collection requirement regardless of payment method.
The sources do not establish a typical dollar cost for a competitive collection, an average player’s spending, or a guaranteed free-to-play completion time. Those figures vary by format, set rotation, deck choice, and how efficiently a player uses rewards.
A practical progression plan for a new free player
1. Start with the free account and introductory content
Install Arena on a supported desktop or mobile device and complete the opening activities. Use this stage to learn the interface, turn structure, deck construction, and available match types before spending any currency.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →2. Establish a resource priority
Decide whether your immediate goal is a first constructed deck, a larger collection, limited play, or cosmetics. Gold spent on a pack cannot also fund a draft entry, so a simple priority prevents accidental depletion.
3. Play the activities that generate progression
Complete available quests, play matches, pursue wins where practical, and enter eligible events. These are the activities Wizards identifies as sources of gold and Set Mastery progress.
4. Use free-entry opportunities
When Midweek Magic or another no-entry-cost activity appears, review its current rules and rewards. It provides a way to play an event without paying gold or gems.
5. Save for a deliberate purchase
Before buying a pack, cosmetic, or draft entry, check the current listing and ask whether it supports your stated goal. Saving for Quick Draft is reasonable for a player who wants drafted cards and win rewards; buying packs is simpler for someone who wants direct collection additions.
6. Review the Mastery track before considering the pass
Look at the current set’s reward list, estimate how much of the track you will complete, and compare the rewards you personally value with the displayed price. Do not assume that a pass is automatically profitable or that every set has the same contents.

- Selection: More resources let you pursue more cards or more formats sooner.
- Additional rewards: The Mastery Pass opens a second reward track.
- Cosmetics: Gold, gems, event rewards, and Mastery rewards can include visual items.
None of these points changes the core answer: buying is optional. They explain why a player might still choose to spend after starting for free.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Confusing gold with gems
Gold is primarily earned through play; gems are the currency directly associated with store purchases, although gems can also be earned. Do not budget them as if they arrive at the same rate or have identical acquisition rules.
Assuming every event has the same fee
Quick Draft’s published example is 5,000 gold or 750 gems, while Midweek Magic is described as free-entry. Other events can use different requirements. Read the current event panel before confirming entry.
Buying a pass without checking the set period
The pass adds rewards to a set-specific track. Check how much time remains, how far you expect to progress, and which rewards are actually listed before purchasing.
Relying on an unofficial daily-income promise
No verified daily or weekly gold quantity is established here. Treat exact routine-income claims cautiously unless they are tied to the current official rules and date.
Assuming a set’s reward list is permanent
Set Mastery and Mastery Pass rewards vary by set. Reality Fracture’s published reward types are context for that set, not a guarantee for future releases.
Spending before identifying a deck goal
Opening random packs or purchasing cosmetics can be enjoyable, but it may delay a focused deck plan. Decide whether you value cards, drafts, event access, or appearance items before committing limited currency.
How current are the prices and rewards?
Several details in Arena are release-dependent. Quick Draft’s cited entry is 5,000 gold or 750 gems, but event terms may be revised. Mastery rewards are tied to the active set, and free-entry activities can change their schedules or cosmetics. The Reality Fracture set was announced for Arena release on September 29, 2026; that date is set-specific context rather than a permanent statement about the game’s economy.
For any purchase, use the in-client listing as the final check. Confirm the displayed currency cost, event rules, reward table, and remaining progression period immediately before spending. This is especially important for a Mastery Pass, whose current price is not established in the official material summarized here.
Free-to-play verdict
MTG Arena is genuinely free to start and play. You can access the game without a purchase, earn gold through play, progress on the base Set Mastery track, use earned resources for packs or events, and take part in free-entry activities such as Midweek Magic when available.
Recommended Free Tools
Money buys optional convenience, extra rewards, cosmetics, and access to the purchasable gem economy. It can accelerate collection growth, but it is not a prerequisite for playing Arena. The most reliable free strategy is to focus on a manageable collection goal, keep gold and gems distinct, inspect current event terms, and treat the Mastery Pass as a set-specific optional purchase rather than a requirement.
