Minehut is good for a small, budget-zero Minecraft server when you can accept a 10-player cap, 1GB of RAM, and sleep time when nobody is playing. Its free Starter plan is easy to launch and supports Java, Bedrock, plugins, and basic file management. It becomes a less suitable choice for large groups, demanding modpacks, guaranteed 24/7 availability, or communities that cannot tolerate queues or resource limits.
The right alternative depends on the constraint that matters most: free customization, no queue, modpack support, backups, locations, or hands-on support. The comparison below separates those trade-offs instead of treating RAM or marketing counters as a complete performance test.

Minehut is a hosted Minecraft service designed to let a player create a server without installing server software locally. Its current offering includes Java and Bedrock support, crossplay, plugins and mods, DDoS protection, backups, browser-based plugin and file management, and no credit-card requirement to start. The free service has no playtime limit, but free servers sleep when empty and wake when a player joins.
Minehut’s homepage describes the service as “the largest free Minecraft server host — create a server in seconds, with no downloads and no credit card.” That is the company’s own positioning, not an independently audited market ranking. A homepage snapshot taken on October 15, 2026 showed 3,405 players and 1,259 servers online; those counters change continuously and should not be used as a quality, reliability, or audience-size benchmark.

Minehut plan limits
| Plan | Monthly price shown by Minehut | Maximum players | RAM | CPU | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | Free | 10 | 1GB | Basic | Sleeps when empty; no playtime limit |
| Standard | 600 credits/month | Not stated | 2GB | Not stated | Not stated |
| Pro | 1,800 credits/month | Not stated | 6GB | Not stated | Not stated |
| Ultimate | 6,000 credits/month | Not stated | 14GB | Not stated | 24/7 |
Minehut lists a 10GB storage limit for free containers. Paid plans include 20GB before optional custom upgrades. The published plan information does not establish a universal player limit for Standard, Pro, or Ultimate, so do not infer one from the RAM amount alone.
How sleeping affects play
On Starter, Standard, and Pro, the server is not continuously running while empty. A player joining triggers a wake-up process, so the first connection can take longer than a connection to an already-running server. This saves resources and keeps the free service viable, but it is inconvenient for scheduled events, automated farms that need to run unattended, or players who expect an always-available address.
Ultimate is the listed exception: it remains online 24/7. Paying for that plan addresses the sleep issue, but it does not automatically make every modpack, world, or player count appropriate. CPU behavior, software compatibility, storage, backups, and the specific version still matter.

Is Minehut good for your server?
Minehut is a strong fit when
- Your group has no more than 10 simultaneous players on the free plan.
- You are running vanilla Minecraft or a lightweight plugin setup rather than a large modpack.
- You want to start without paying, downloading server software, or entering card details.
- Your players can wait for a sleeping server to wake when the world is empty.
- Browser-based management is preferable to configuring a VPS or local machine.
Choose a paid plan or another host when
- Your group regularly exceeds the Starter plan’s 10-player ceiling.
- A heavy Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, or large modpack needs more memory and predictable CPU headroom.
- The world must stay online for players in different time zones, even when no one is currently connected.
- You need a queue-free start, specialized locations, extensive support, or a particular backup policy.
- You need more than the free container’s 10GB storage limit.
Minehut does not publish a common benchmark that would justify calling it universally lag-free or ranking it against every host. Actual tick rate and connection quality depend on the Minecraft version, world size, simulation distance, entity count, plugins or mods, and the host’s current resource contention. Treat the plan specifications as capacity signals, not a performance guarantee.
Best Minehut alternatives by priority
| Your priority | Best fit in this comparison | What it offers | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free hosting with broad customization | Aternos | Free Java and Bedrock hosting, plugins, mods, modpacks, custom worlds, DDoS protection, and Google Drive backups | Limited capacity can put server starts in a queue |
| Skip the Aternos queue | exaroton | Paid hosting related to Aternos, with file uploads and more advanced control | It is paid, so it is not a free replacement |
| Modpacks, locations, backups, and support | BisectHosting | 21 locations, seven days of backups, one-click modpacks, DDoS protection, and 24/7/365 support; a displayed 2GB plan was $5.99 per month before tax | Price and plan terms must be confirmed at checkout |
| Budget paid Java/Bedrock hosting | Shockbyte | Java and Bedrock support, one-click server-type and modpack installation, file access, and 24/7 support | Hardware, current price, and refund terms vary by selected plan and need verification |
| Support-led paid setup | Apex Hosting | Paid plans documented with unlimited slots, DDoS protection, automated backups, a free subdomain, and one-click pack installers | Documented as pricier than some alternatives; checkout pricing is volatile |
Aternos versus Minehut
Aternos is the closest free comparison when customization matters more than instant starts. Its published feature set includes Java and Bedrock servers, plugins, mods, modpacks, custom worlds, DDoS protection, and Google Drive backups. Aternos says limited capacity can place a start in a queue, so the practical question is whether you prefer Minehut’s sleep-and-wake behavior or Aternos’s queue risk.
Aternos states, “We are free, and we will always be free for everyone at any time.” Its homepage has also displayed counters of 141,650,923 users and 1 million players per day. Those are changing service counters rather than independently audited audience statistics. They do not establish that Aternos will be faster or more reliable for your particular world.

Pick Minehut if
- You want a quick, browser-first setup with no card and no stated playtime limit.
- Your group fits within 10 concurrent players and 1GB RAM.
- You prefer a sleeping server to a possible start queue.
Pick Aternos if
- You need the free service to expose a wider range of mods, modpacks, or custom-world workflows.
- Google Drive backups are important to your recovery plan.
- You can schedule around a queue when capacity is constrained.
When exaroton makes sense
Exaroton is the paid path Aternos points users toward when they want to skip the queue. The service adds paid hosting, file uploads, and advanced control. It is best understood as a queue-free, more configurable option in the Aternos ecosystem—not as another free tier. Compare its usage and billing model with a fixed monthly plan if your server runs continuously, because the cheapest option depends on how often the world is online.
Paid alternatives for modpacks and support
BisectHosting
BisectHosting’s published page lists 21 worldwide locations, seven days of backups, one-click modpack deployment, DDoS protection, and 24/7/365 support. The displayed 2GB plan was $5.99 per month before tax at the time documented. That figure is a displayed plan price, not a guarantee for every location, billing term, tax region, or later checkout. Confirm renewal pricing, included storage, player policy, and cancellation terms before ordering.
Shockbyte
Shockbyte lists Java and Bedrock support, one-click installation for server types and modpacks, file access, and 24/7 support. It can suit a player who wants a conventional paid panel rather than a free service that sleeps. Hardware allocation, price, and refund conditions should be checked for the exact plan; the available information does not support a blanket claim that every Shockbyte plan outperforms Minehut.

Apex Hosting
A review documented Apex paid plans with unlimited slots, DDoS protection, automated backups, a free subdomain, and one-click pack installers. The same review characterized Apex as more expensive than some alternatives. Because paid prices and promotions change, use the live checkout total and read the current resource and refund terms rather than relying on an old headline price.
How to choose a Minecraft host without overbuying
- Count concurrent players. Use the busiest expected session, not the number of people in a chat group. Add headroom for guests and growth; a server that is full every night has no room for a new player or a temporary spike.
- Identify the edition. Decide whether you need Java, Bedrock, or crossplay. Confirm that the host supports the edition and version your players actually use.
- Name the software stack. Write down Vanilla, Paper, Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, or the exact modpack and Minecraft version. “Supports mods” is not enough if the panel cannot install your loader or if client and server versions differ.
- Set the availability requirement. Sleep-on-empty, a start queue, paid on-demand billing, and fixed 24/7 hosting are different operating models. Choose one deliberately.
- Compare resources beyond RAM. Check CPU behavior, storage, backups, locations, DDoS protection, file access, support hours, and the full recurring price. RAM alone does not reveal tick performance or recovery quality.
- Check the billing details. Distinguish free allowances, credits, one-time upgrades, promotional prices, taxes, renewal prices, and optional storage. A low introductory number is not the same as a permanent monthly cost.
- Test the management workflow. Make sure you can upload a world, change the server type, schedule backups, inspect logs, and restore a save without opening a support ticket for every routine task.
Moving a world from Minehut to another host
A migration is safest when the original world remains untouched until the new server has been verified. The exact button names differ by panel, but the sequence is consistent.
- Stop the server cleanly. Ask players to log out, stop the instance, and wait for the panel to confirm that it is offline. Copying a live world risks missing region or player-data changes.
- Download a complete backup. Save the world folder and, where available, the server properties, allowlist, operator list, plugin or mod configuration, and a list of installed versions. Keep a second copy on a local drive.
- Record compatibility details. Write down the Minecraft version, Java version if exposed, server loader, modpack release, world type, and required datapacks. A destination running a different loader can fail to start or corrupt a save.
- Create the destination instance. Select the matching Java or Bedrock edition and the same Vanilla, Paper, Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge family before uploading the world.
- Upload and place the world. Use the destination panel’s file manager or upload tool, then set the world name in the server configuration if the folder name is not the default.
- Install matching plugins or mods. Use the same versions where possible. Remove client-only mods from the server and check dependency requirements before the first launch.
- Start with a test group. Join as an operator, inspect the console, travel to several areas, test inventories and permissions, and confirm that plugins, redstone, commands, and crossplay behave as expected.
- Keep the old copy until acceptance. Do not delete the Minehut backup until players have confirmed that builds, inventories, advancements, and settings survived the move.
Common problems and fixes
The free server will not start immediately
First determine whether you are seeing Minehut’s wake-up delay or an alternative host’s queue. Wait for the panel status to change before repeatedly clicking Start. If the service reports a version or configuration error, inspect the console and restore the last known-good server type or mod set.

Players experience lag
Reduce view and simulation distance, cap unnecessary entities, remove malfunctioning clocks or farms, and test with plugins or mods disabled in batches. Check the console for repeated errors and watch whether lag occurs only during world generation. Do not assume adding RAM fixes a CPU-bound tick loop; compare CPU disclosure and software configuration before upgrading.

- Confirm that every mod targets the exact Minecraft and loader version.
- Install required dependencies and remove client-only files from the server.
- Check Java requirements for the modpack and the host’s supported runtime.
- Read the first meaningful error in the log rather than the final cascade of shutdown messages.
- Restore the last working backup if the world itself may have been affected.
The world appears to be missing after migration
Stop the destination server and verify that the uploaded folder contains region, player, data, and level files at the expected directory depth. If the panel points to a different world name, correct the world setting instead of uploading the same files repeatedly. Keep the original backup untouched while diagnosing.
Backups are not enough
A host’s advertised backup count is not a complete disaster-recovery plan. Download periodic local copies, label them with the Minecraft version and date, and test opening one on a disposable instance. A backup that has never been restored is only an assumption.
Bottom-line decision
Use Minehut Starter when a small friend group wants a no-cost, low-friction server and can live with 10 players, 1GB RAM, limited storage, and sleep when empty. Upgrade within Minehut when the resource ceiling or 24/7 requirement justifies Standard, Pro, or Ultimate. Choose Aternos for a broader free customization set if a queue is acceptable; choose exaroton when paying to avoid that queue is worthwhile. For paid modpacks, locations, backups, or support, evaluate BisectHosting, Shockbyte, or Apex Hosting against the exact loader, region, backup, CPU, and billing requirements rather than selecting on RAM alone.
