Yes, but not automatically. Minecraft Java Edition and Minecraft Bedrock Edition are separate editions with different network protocols, so a Java player cannot join a Bedrock server directly and a Bedrock player cannot join a normal Java server without a compatibility layer. The usual solution is a Java server running Geyser plus Floodgate: Geyser translates Bedrock connections for the Java server, while Floodgate lets Bedrock players authenticate without owning a Java account.
This guide explains what cross-platform Minecraft actually supports, the Paper/Spigot setup that works for most self-hosted servers, the UDP networking details that commonly block Bedrock players, proxy configurations, version limitations, and the security and maintenance issues to plan for.

Minecraft cross-platform play is often used to describe two different things. Players on different hardware can play together when they are using the same edition, but Java and Bedrock are not natively cross-compatible.

The important distinction is that crossplay is an add-on layer, not a switch in the standard server settings. A regular Java server accepts Java protocol traffic. A Bedrock client uses a different protocol and UDP networking, so it needs a translator and a separately reachable Bedrock endpoint.

The practical crossplay architecture
Geyser translates the connection
Geyser acts as a protocol translator. Bedrock players connect to Geyser, and Geyser presents their activity to the Java server in the format that Java plugins and the server understand. The Java server remains the authoritative world and gameplay server.
Floodgate handles Bedrock authentication
Floodgate complements Geyser; it does not replace it. With Floodgate enabled, a Bedrock player can join without first owning or signing in with a Java Edition account. A standalone Geyser installation uses a Floodgate key file to verify this arrangement, so that key must be treated as a credential.

Java players continue to use the normal Java address and port. Bedrock players use the Bedrock address and UDP port configured for Geyser. The two groups then enter the same Java-hosted world. Plugin behavior, commands and permissions still come from the Java server, so a plugin that assumes Java-only clients may need its own compatibility testing.
Requirements before you begin
- A working Java server based on Paper, Spigot, Purpur, Pufferfish or Folia. Geyser-Spigot is not intended for a vanilla, Forge or Fabric server installation.
- Administrative access to the server files, console and operating-system firewall. Router access is also required when the server is behind home NAT.
- A Java server port, normally TCP 25565, that Java players can already reach.
- A Bedrock UDP port. You can reuse the Java port number if your host and firewall allow TCP and UDP on that number, or request a separate port allocation.
- Plugin files downloaded from the official GeyserMC distribution for your server platform.
- A current backup of the world and server configuration before installing or upgrading plugins.
Get the Java server running normally first. If Java clients cannot connect before Geyser is installed, adding crossplay will make diagnosis harder rather than fixing the underlying server or firewall problem.
Set up a Paper or Spigot crossplay server
1. Start and verify the Java server
- Install and launch your Paper, Spigot, Purpur, Pufferfish or Folia server according to that platform’s instructions.
- Accept the Minecraft EULA where required and let the server generate its files.
- Confirm that the console reaches a ready state without a binding or plugin error.
- From a Java client on another machine, connect using the server’s hostname or IP and TCP port 25565, or the custom Java port supplied by your host.
- Stop the server cleanly before adding plugins. Do not copy plugin jars into a running server.
2. Install Geyser and Floodgate
- Download the Geyser plugin that matches your server platform and the Floodgate plugin from the official GeyserMC site.
- Copy both jar files into the server’s
pluginsdirectory. Do not put them in the root directory or a client-side mods folder. - Start the server once. Geyser and Floodgate should create their configuration directories and files.
- Stop the server again before editing any configuration. Editing while the server is running can be overwritten when it shuts down.
On a healthy installation, the console should show both plugins loading. A missing dependency, an incompatible server platform or a Java runtime problem will appear in the startup log; resolve that first rather than proceeding with network changes.

3. Point Geyser at the Java server
Open Geyser’s generated configuration file. The section containing the Java destination is named remote in some Geyser versions and java in others. Use the name present in your generated file rather than pasting a block from a different release.
Set the destination address to the Java server address and the Java port to the port on which the server is listening. On a single-server installation this is commonly the local server address and TCP 25565. Set the authentication type to floodgate. This tells Geyser to use Floodgate’s account bridge instead of requiring a Java account for every Bedrock connection.
Keep the indentation and spelling used by the generated YAML file. A malformed colon, tab character or wrong nesting level can prevent Geyser from loading. If the server stops with a configuration parse error, restore the generated file and change one setting at a time.
4. Choose the Bedrock address and port
Geyser needs a Bedrock listener. Two common approaches are available:
- Reuse the Java port number: set
clone-remote-port: true. Geyser uses the same number as the Java server, but Bedrock still reaches it over UDP. - Use a separate allocation: set the Bedrock listener to an additional port supplied by your host. This is often necessary on shared hosting or when the Java port cannot accept both protocols.
Shared hosts frequently display 19132 as a default Bedrock port. That number may already be allocated to another customer, so confirm the actual allocation in the host control panel instead of assuming the default is available. If you choose a separate port, enter it in the Bedrock listener section of Geyser’s configuration; the exact key names can vary by Geyser version.

Record the final public hostname or IP and the Bedrock port separately from the Java endpoint. A Bedrock player must enter the UDP port, not merely the Java TCP port shown in a Java server listing.
5. Open the Bedrock UDP port
Bedrock traffic uses UDP. Opening only TCP 25565 is one of the most common reasons a setup appears to work for Java players while every Bedrock connection times out.
- On the server operating system, create an inbound firewall rule for the selected Bedrock port using UDP.
- If the server is behind a home router, forward that UDP port to the server’s private LAN address. Keep the Java TCP forwarding rule as well.
- If your provider has a network firewall or security group, add the same UDP port there.
- Check that the port is assigned to the correct server instance. A rule on a different virtual machine or old private IP will not help.
- Restart Geyser or the server after saving the configuration, then watch the console for a successful Bedrock listener.
Do not expose administrative panels, remote-console ports or unrelated services while troubleshooting. Only publish the Java and Bedrock ports that players need.
6. Test the bridge
- Start the server and wait for Geyser and Floodgate to load without errors.
- If your Geyser build provides it, run
geyser connectiontestin the server console. The command and its output can differ by release, so use the command accepted by your installed version. - From a Bedrock device on a different network, add the server using its public address and the configured Bedrock UDP port.
- Join while watching the Java console. A successful connection should produce a Geyser login message and then a normal player join event.
- Test both an existing Java account and a Floodgate Bedrock account if you have access to both. Verify movement, chat, inventory, commands and any permissions plugins you use.
Floodgate names, whitelists and permissions
Floodgate adds a prefix to Bedrock usernames so they do not collide with Java account names. A dot is the default prefix in many configurations. A Bedrock player who appears as .Alex in the server may not be recognized as Alex by a whitelist or permissions plugin.

When enabling a whitelist, add the Floodgate-form username exactly as the server sees it. Check the console’s join message or the player list for the precise spelling, capitalization and prefix. Apply permission nodes to that account name, not to the player’s Xbox gamertag alone. If a permissions plugin supports UUID-based assignments, confirm that it handles Floodgate identities correctly before relying on it.

Do not remove the prefix simply to make names look familiar unless you understand the collision and authentication consequences. Two accounts with the same visible name can create ownership, moderation and inventory confusion.
Proxy networks: BungeeCord, Waterfall and Velocity
A proxy changes where Floodgate is installed. For a network using BungeeCord, Waterfall or Velocity, install Floodgate on the proxy and on every Spigot backend that receives Floodgate player data.
- Install the proxy-compatible Geyser and Floodgate components on the proxy according to the proxy’s platform instructions.
- Install Floodgate on each backend server that Bedrock players can reach through the proxy.
- Enable IP forwarding in the proxy configuration so the backend receives the original player information.
- Set
bungeecord: truein each backend server’sspigot.ymlwhen using the BungeeCord-style forwarding expected by that setup. - Keep the Floodgate key material synchronized as required by the proxy arrangement. A mismatched key or missing backend plugin can reject Bedrock logins after the proxy connection succeeds.
- Expose the Bedrock UDP listener on the proxy’s public address. Players should normally connect to the proxy, not directly to an individual backend.
Proxy configurations are more version-sensitive than a one-server installation. Follow the configuration generated by your installed Geyser and proxy releases, and test movement between backends, reconnects and server transfers before opening the network to the public.
Version compatibility and configuration caveats
Geyser tracks the newest Java protocol. If your Paper or Spigot server is older than the Java version Geyser expects, install ViaVersion where appropriate so the server can accept the protocol range Geyser presents. Check the compatibility information for your exact Geyser build and server version rather than assuming that any combination will work.
Configuration keys can move between releases. In particular, the Java destination section may be labelled remote or java, and listener settings may be organized differently. Always edit the configuration generated by your installed version.

A report claiming native Geyser support for a version identified as 26.2 has not been independently established here; do not treat that report as a reason to skip the normal compatibility checks. Likewise, an older hosting guide recommends setting enforce-secure-profile=false in server.properties for Minecraft 1.19.1 and later. That setting is version- and implementation-sensitive, so verify it against current Geyser documentation and your server build before changing it. It should not be your first response to a generic connection failure.
Security: protect Floodgate credentials
In a standalone Geyser installation, the Floodgate key file allows Bedrock accounts to bypass normal Java authentication through the Floodgate bridge. Anyone who obtains that key may be able to impersonate or authorize accounts in ways you did not intend.

- Restrict operating-system permissions so only the server account and trusted administrators can read it.
- Keep backups encrypted and remove old copies from shared hosting, temporary upload folders and automated logs.
- After a suspected leak, follow the current Floodgate procedure for replacing the key and updating every proxy or backend that uses it.
- Use a whitelist, strong operator practices and least-privilege permissions on a public server.
Floodgate removes the requirement for a Java account; it does not remove the need to moderate names, permissions, chat and griefing. Treat Bedrock identities as real server accounts with their own audit and ban records.
Why Bedrock players cannot join a Java server
The Java server works, but Bedrock times out
- Confirm that the player is using the Bedrock address and port, not the Java-only listing.
- Verify that the port is open for UDP at the operating-system firewall, router and provider firewall.
- Check that the port allocation belongs to this server and is not already assigned elsewhere.
- Confirm that Geyser reports its Bedrock listener as started.
Geyser loads but rejects the login
- Check that Floodgate is installed and loaded, and that Geyser’s authentication type is set to
floodgate. - Inspect the generated configuration for a wrong Java address, Java port or YAML indentation.
- On a proxy network, verify Floodgate on the proxy and every backend, IP forwarding, the required
spigot.ymlsetting and synchronized key material. - Compare the Geyser, server and ViaVersion compatibility requirements for the exact releases installed.
The player joins but cannot use commands or the whitelist
- Look for the Floodgate prefix, commonly a leading dot, in the server’s player list.
- Add that exact prefixed name to the whitelist and permissions system.
- Check whether a plugin has Java-only assumptions about UUIDs, skins, chat signatures or command syntax.
Only local players can connect
This usually indicates NAT or firewall configuration rather than a Geyser translation problem. Test from a mobile connection or another external network, confirm the router forwards UDP to the server’s current private IP, and make sure the public address resolves to the correct home connection. If your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT, inbound hosting may require a provider-supported public address or an external host.
Standalone Bedrock Dedicated Server limitations
Floodgate is not compatible with the standalone Bedrock Dedicated Server because that server does not run Java plugins. You cannot install the Paper/Spigot Geyser-Floodgate combination on a Bedrock Dedicated Server and expect it to become a Java bridge.
Xbox, PlayStation and Switch players connecting to a Bedrock server require a separate arrangement. The setup described here documents Bedrock clients joining a Java server through Geyser; it does not establish a universal method for consoles to join every standalone Bedrock server. Check the current platform-specific guidance before promising console access to your players.
Maintenance checklist for a reliable crossplay server
- Back up the world, server properties, plugin configurations and Floodgate key before updates.
- Read the release notes for Geyser, Floodgate, your server platform and ViaVersion before replacing jars.
- Confirm that the Java and Bedrock ports remain assigned and open after a host migration or router change.
- Retest a Bedrock login after every server, proxy, firewall or DNS change.
- Review whitelist and permissions entries for the Floodgate username prefix.
- Keep the Java server and plugins patched, but stage updates on a copy when the world or community is important.
- Monitor logs for repeated authentication failures, malformed packets, unexpected operators or attempts to access administrative commands.
The dependable model is straightforward: run a supported Java server, add both Geyser and Floodgate, configure the Java destination and a reachable UDP Bedrock listener, then test from outside the host’s local network. When a Bedrock player cannot join, check the endpoint and UDP path first, followed by Floodgate authentication, version compatibility and prefixed identity handling.
