Not every Meta AI interaction is private in the same way. In a regular chat, Meta receives the prompt and the messages, media, or feedback you choose to send. Meta says AI interactions can also inform content and ad recommendations in most regions. By contrast, Meta describes Incognito Chat and certain Private Processing tasks as secure processing paths with narrower privacy protections. Those protections do not automatically apply to ordinary chats, every WhatsApp message, or every interaction with AI glasses.
The practical distinction is what feature you use, what information you give it, and whether the feature processes that information on-device or through a cloud service. Availability varies by feature, country, app, and account.
What Meta AI can receive
Meta AI is available in Meta apps and as a separate Meta AI app. The assistant receives information you deliberately submit to it so it can respond. Depending on the feature, that could be text, a voice prompt, an image or other media, a message you share with it, or feedback about its answer. The Meta AI overview describes the assistant and where it is available.
That is different from saying Meta AI can freely inspect everything in your accounts. The sources describing these features establish particular ways that users can provide information or context; they do not establish that Meta AI routinely reads every private message or sees every photo in a user’s account.

What you send to an ordinary chat
For an ordinary interaction, consider the prompt and anything attached or shared as information you are sending to Meta AI. WhatsApp says that, when you use its AI experiences, Meta receives the prompt, messages shared with the AI, and feedback to provide a response. WhatsApp also says it may use that information to improve AI quality. You can read its explanation in WhatsApp’s help information about AI experiences.
Voice prompting is optional. If you choose to send a voice prompt, the voice interaction is part of the information provided for the assistant to answer. WhatsApp’s instructions for sending Meta AI voice prompts explain that feature.
When WhatsApp messages provide context
WhatsApp’s side-chat feature can use messages from the relevant individual or group conversation as context when you invoke the feature. WhatsApp says only you see the resulting side-chat conversation. This is a specific, user-invoked use of context from that conversation—not evidence that Meta AI can browse all your WhatsApp chats. When a device adds camera or microphone context
AI glasses create a different privacy question from a typed chat because the device may use what the wearer sees and hears. Meta says some actions, such as calls or texts, take place on-device, while more advanced features need larger models and cloud processing. In a September 23, 2026 article, Meta Engineering also described expanding Private Processing to Meta AI glasses; it did not establish that every glasses interaction uses that processing path or that rollout is complete. How Meta says it uses AI interactions
There are two separate uses to understand: providing or improving AI features, and personalizing recommendations elsewhere in Meta’s apps. WhatsApp says information submitted for an AI response may be used to improve AI quality. Separately, Meta announced that, beginning December 16, 2025, AI interactions would be used to personalize content and ad recommendations in most regions. Meta’s example was that asking Meta AI about hiking could lead to hiking-related recommendations or ads. The announcement is available as Meta’s October 1, 2025 statement.
Meta said that information from accounts linked in Accounts Center could be used across Meta Company Products. Its example was that a WhatsApp account not added to Accounts Center would not be used to personalize experiences across the user’s other linked Meta accounts. That describes a possible cross-account use, not a guarantee that all accounts are linked or that every interaction produces a recommendation.
Meta also said it would not use conversations about listed sensitive topics—including religious views, sexual orientation, political views, health, racial or ethnic origin, philosophical beliefs, and trade-union membership—to show users ads. This is a specific statement about ad display. It should not be read as a promise that such information is never processed for any purpose.

The labels matter because they describe different interaction paths, not a single privacy setting that covers all uses of Meta AI.

What Incognito Chat changes
On May 13, 2026, Meta announced Incognito Chat on WhatsApp and in the Meta AI app. Meta said: “Your Incognito Chat conversations are processed in a secure environment that even Meta can’t see, and disappear by default.” It also said these conversations are not saved and disappear by default when you exit. The details are in Meta’s announcement of Incognito Chat.
That is a meaningful contrast with an ordinary interaction, but it is not a blanket promise about every AI feature. Meta said rollout would take place over the coming months, so the feature may not appear for every person, country, or app version at the same time. Check whether Incognito Chat is actually offered in the app you are using before relying on it. The statement about Meta’s inability to access the secure environment is Meta’s description of its design; the cited announcement is not independent verification of the implementation.
What Private Processing means—and what it does not
Private Processing is Meta’s name for an optional confidential-computing capability used for selected AI tasks. Meta Engineering has described it for tasks such as summarizing WhatsApp messages. Meta says data shared with Private Processing is unavailable to other systems while it is being processed and is protected in transit to the processing application. It also describes design requirements for fail-closed behavior, transparency, and independent auditing. These are Meta’s published design claims; they should not be treated as independent confirmation of every implementation.

Private Processing is not synonymous with “Meta AI is private.” It applies to supported tasks that use this capability, rather than automatically covering every prompt or message. Meta Engineering’s April 29, 2025 explanation says: “Using Meta AI through WhatsApp, including features that use Private Processing, must be optional.” This is a stated design principle, not proof that every AI-related interface element can be removed from every Meta app.

How to reduce what you share and review available controls
No single universal control is established in the cited materials as a way to disable all Meta AI data processing. The controls below address particular settings or decisions, so choose the one that matches your concern.
Before sending a prompt
- Do not include information you would not want to submit to the service, such as sensitive personal details, account credentials, or identifying information about someone else.
- Review attachments and quoted messages before sending them. A prompt can reveal more than its text if it includes an image, audio, or message context.
- If you do not want a response based on a conversation, do not invoke a feature that uses that conversation’s messages as context.
Review account and recommendation settings
Meta’s privacy overview points to Privacy Checkup, tools to access, manage, download, or delete personal data, Accounts Center, and ad preferences. These are useful places to review account information and recommendation settings. The overview does not establish one setting that turns off every form of AI processing. See Meta’s privacy tools and information security overview and review whether your accounts are linked in Accounts Center if cross-account personalization is a concern.
Use chat-level privacy controls where supported
WhatsApp describes Advanced Chat Privacy as a way to prevent messages in particularly sensitive chats from being used for certain AI features, such as mentioning Meta AI in chats. This is a chat-level control for specified features, not a general opt-out from all Meta AI processing. Check the current chat’s privacy options and the applicable WhatsApp help information, because the control and its availability may vary.
Use a private-processing mode only for the task it covers
If Incognito Chat is available, choose it for a temporary conversation when its stated behavior meets your needs. For a supported task that offers Private Processing, verify that the feature is using that path rather than assuming all AI requests do. Those two choices have different scopes and are not substitutes for reviewing what you send.

Separate account support from general AI chat
Meta announced a support assistant within Facebook and Instagram to help with account issues and, for some requests, privacy or profile settings. That is a support feature; its existence does not establish that the assistant has unrestricted access to all account content. Meta described it in its March 2026 announcement.
What is not established about ordinary chats
The official sources cited here do not establish a complete, current retention period or deletion-control schedule for ordinary Meta AI chats across apps and regions. Do not assume that ordinary chats are deleted on the same schedule Meta describes for Incognito Chat. Likewise, the sources do not establish account-by-account Incognito Chat availability or independent verification of every Private Processing implementation.
This means the most reliable practical distinction is between what you submit and the specific mode or task you selected. A privacy label for one feature should not be generalized to another, and a control for recommendations or a particular chat should not be mistaken for a universal AI opt-out.
