Yes. Marvel Rivals is free to download and play. The publisher says its heroes, maps, and other gameplay elements are available without a purchase. Spending is optional and is aimed at cosmetics—such as costumes, emotes, sprays, MVP animations, and nameplates—rather than stronger characters or equipment. The game also has a free Battle Pass track and an optional paid Luxury track.
Prices and shop inventories change by season and region. The official materials available for this guide contain historical examples, not a reliable current price list, so use the in-game store for the amount and contents shown on your account.
What “free to play” means in Marvel Rivals
Marvel Rivals uses a free-to-play model: you can install the game, enter matches, and use the playable roster without buying a starter pack or subscription. In its official monetization explanation, the Marvel Rivals Team says heroes, maps, and gameplay elements are free. That means the core competitive experience is not divided into a paid edition and a cheaper trial.

Optional purchases support the game through visual items and seasonal progression. The publisher’s stated policy is that paid items do not improve combat performance. In its December 5, 2024 monetization post, the team wrote: “We will be charging for cosmetics that will provide only visual changes, with no stat bonuses or pay-to-win elements.” Read the complete statement in the official monetization announcement.

“Free” does not mean every cosmetic is free. It means access to the game’s matches and gameplay systems does not depend on buying those cosmetics.
What Marvel Rivals in-game purchases include
The paid catalog is built around items that change how your profile, character, or match presentation looks. Individual items can be sold separately, while bundles group several cosmetics and may offer a discount compared with buying each item alone.
Costumes
Costumes change a hero’s appearance. They do not add damage, health, cooldown reductions, movement advantages, or other combat statistics according to the publisher’s monetization policy. A costume can therefore be valuable as a style choice or a way to collect a particular Marvel-inspired design, but it is not a gameplay upgrade.
Emotes
Emotes are expressive animations used to communicate or celebrate in a match. They are presentation items rather than abilities and do not alter a hero’s controls or effectiveness.
Sprays
Sprays let players place decorative images in the game world where the feature allows it. Like emotes, they are a personalization option and have no stated effect on match outcomes.
MVP animations
An MVP animation changes the presentation shown for a highlighted player after a match. It affects the end-of-match sequence, not the scoring, matchmaking, or combat statistics that produced the result.

Bundles
A standard bundle example in the launch monetization explanation combines a costume, MVP animation, emote, spray, and nameplate. The exact contents of a bundle are determined by the offer in the store, so check every item listed before confirming a purchase. A bundle discount is not the same as a permanent discount on every item; it applies to the specific package displayed.
| Purchase type | What it changes | Gameplay advantage? |
|---|---|---|
| Costume | Hero appearance | No stated stat bonus |
| Emote | Expression or animation | No |
| Spray | Decorative in-match image | No |
| MVP animation | Post-match highlight presentation | No |
| Nameplate | Profile or identity presentation | No |
| Bundle | Several listed cosmetics together | No; contents remain cosmetic |
How the Battle Pass works
Marvel Rivals has a Battle Pass with two progression tracks: a free track and a paid Luxury track. The free track lets a player earn rewards without purchasing the pass. The launch description said it included an epic-quality costume and other items. Because rewards are seasonal, that launch inventory should not be treated as the reward list for a later season.
Free track
You can progress through the free portion by playing and completing the activities that award Battle Pass progress. The launch explanation specifically described an epic-quality costume among the free rewards. The number and type of free rewards can change, so inspect the current pass screen rather than assuming every season has identical contents.
Luxury track
The Luxury Battle Pass adds a paid reward lane to the same seasonal progression. The Season 0 launch description said its Luxury pass contained five costumes plus related cosmetics. That is a historical description of Season 0, not a guarantee that every current pass contains five costumes.
A Luxury purchase is best understood as access to additional rewards tied to a season’s pass. It does not unlock stronger heroes or alter the combat rules. The pass can be worthwhile if you expect to complete enough levels to claim the rewards you want; it is less useful if you will stop playing early and would prefer one specific cosmetic from the store.

Marvel Rivals currencies: Lattice, Units, and Chrono Tokens
The currencies serve different purposes, so confusing them can lead to an unexpected purchase or an incorrect expectation about what you can earn through play.
| Currency | Role described by the publisher | How it is obtained or used |
|---|---|---|
| Lattice | Premium currency | Primarily purchased directly; used for paid offers and passes |
| Units | Exchangeable currency | Can be earned in limited quantities and exchanged from Lattice at a 1:1 ratio |
| Chrono Tokens | Battle Pass reward tokens | Earned through tasks and events to redeem pass rewards |
Lattice
Lattice is the premium currency. The launch explanation describes it as the currency players primarily obtain by purchasing currency packs. The amount displayed in a store offer is the amount charged for that specific regional pack, not a universal dollar value that applies everywhere.
Units
Units can be earned in limited quantities through activities such as the Battle Pass, achievements, and events. They can also be exchanged from Lattice at a 1:1 ratio, according to the official explanation. “Earnable” therefore does not mean unlimited free currency: the publisher explicitly describes the earned supply as limited.
Chrono Tokens
Chrono Tokens are tied to Battle Pass progression. Tasks and events award them, and you use them to redeem pass rewards. They are not the same as Lattice or Units and should not be treated as a cash balance for buying any store item.
Historical prices and why you should not use them as today’s price list
Official announcements provide useful examples of how the system was priced at particular moments, but those figures are season-specific or launch-era amounts. They should be read with their date and region context.
| Offer or example | Published amount | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Steam U.S. Lattice examples | US$0.99 for 100 Lattice; US$99.99 for 11,680 Lattice | Launch-era examples from the December 5, 2024 official monetization post; not current price guidance |
| Season 0 Luxury Battle Pass | 490 Lattice | Season 0 launch price reported in 2024; not a current offer |
| Season 1 Luxury Battle Pass | 990 Lattice | Season-specific announcement published January 7, 2025 |
| Season 1 completion return | 600 Lattice and 600 Units | Reward stated for completing that Season 1 pass; historical, not a promise for later seasons |
| Season 0 Battle Pass return | 590 Lattice | Limited offer running May 15–29, 2025; expired |
The Season 1 price and completion rewards were announced by NetEase Games in its January 7, 2025 Season 1 announcement. The temporary Season 0 return was described in the May 13, 2025 developer update. Neither page establishes what a current season costs in your country.

Before paying, open the game’s store or Battle Pass page and check the displayed Lattice amount, your platform’s checkout currency, the region applied to your account, the reward list, and whether the offer has an end date. Taxes, platform billing rules, exchange rates, and later balance changes can all make an old example unsuitable for a current purchase decision.
Does the Marvel Rivals Battle Pass expire?
The May 13, 2025 developer update changed an important part of the pass model: a purchased Battle Pass never expires and can be completed in future seasons. If you bought that pass, you can return to its rewards later instead of losing access solely because the season ended.
This permanence applies to a purchased pass, not to every time-limited store promotion. The same update announced a Season 0 return that ran only from May 15 through May 29, 2025. Those dates have passed, and the 590-Lattice amount was for that limited return. A future rerun, if any, would need to be checked in the current game rather than assumed from the old announcement.
Is Marvel Rivals pay to win?
Based on the publisher’s stated monetization policy, purchases are not pay to win. The official wording says cosmetics provide visual changes only and have no stat bonuses or pay-to-win elements. The free availability of heroes and maps also means a paying player is not supposed to receive a paid combat roster unavailable to everyone else.
That policy distinguishes power from presentation. A purchased costume can make a hero look different, and a Luxury pass can provide more cosmetic rewards, but neither is described as increasing damage, survivability, ability range, or other match performance. Balance changes, hero design, and player skill remain separate from the cosmetic store.
Platforms, cross-play, and account limitations
The official release FAQ lists Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, Epic Store, and the official Loading Bay website as supported platforms. It says players can play together across platforms when they use the same server. The FAQ also says account data does not currently support cross-progression between platforms.
Best Value
- INCLUDES 6 ICONIC MARVEL CHARACTERS: This 6 figure multipack features iconic Marvel characters, including Spider-Man, Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Captain Marvel, and Black Panther
- 12-INCH SCALE ACTION FIGURES: Imagine these characters leaping into battle with12-inch-scale figures, inspired by the classic character designs from the Marvel comics
- EACH FIGURE INCLUDES 5 TO 7 POINTS OF ARTICULATION: Each figure includes five to seven points of articulation (arms, legs, head, and sometimes hands). Have fun posing figures and imagining exciting action
- MARVEL COMICS-INSPIRED DESIGN: Kids can imagine mighty heroes battling in a fight for the fate of the world with these figures featuring iconic comic-inspired design
- LOOK FOR OTHER MARVEL SUPER HERO TOYS: Be on the lookout for other Marvel action figures and gear to imagine the brave heroes defending the world from evil. Additional products each sold separately. Subject to availability.
That distinction matters when deciding where to spend money. Cross-play means friends on supported systems may be able to join the same matches under the same-server condition. No cross-progression means progress or account data should not be presumed to follow you from one platform to another. Platform policies can change, so verify the current FAQ and account notices before moving between systems. The published release FAQ is available at Marvel Rivals’ official release FAQ.
How to decide whether to spend
Buy a single cosmetic when you want one specific item
If your goal is a particular costume, emote, or nameplate, compare that item with any bundle that contains it. A bundle may be cheaper per item, but it costs more overall and includes cosmetics you may not use.
Choose the Luxury pass only if you will play enough to claim its rewards
Review the current reward track and estimate how often you will complete its tasks. The pass’s value comes from the rewards you actually unlock, not merely from owning the paid lane. Since purchased passes do not expire under the May 2025 policy, unfinished progress can be continued later, but you still need to confirm that the pass shown in your account has that rule.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Use earned Units with their limits in mind
Units can supplement your balance, but the publisher describes the earnable amount as limited. Treat them as a finite way to reduce a future cost, not as an unlimited substitute for premium currency.
Set a spending boundary before opening the store
Decide how much you are willing to spend in your local currency, then convert only the Lattice amount needed for the offer you selected. This avoids buying a larger currency pack simply because it offers a lower unit price while leaving unused balance on your account.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming a launch reward list is current: Season 0’s five-costume Luxury description is historical.
- Treating an old price as universal: the published examples are tied to a date, season, and, in the Lattice examples, Steam U.S. pricing.
- Confusing Units with Chrono Tokens: Units are an exchangeable currency with limited earnable quantities; Chrono Tokens redeem Battle Pass rewards.
- Assuming every promotion is permanent: the Season 0 return ended May 29, 2025.
- Expecting cross-progression: the release FAQ said account data did not support it across platforms.
- Buying for power: the publisher describes paid cosmetics as visual-only, with no stat bonuses.
Bottom line for a new player
You can play Marvel Rivals without paying for heroes, maps, or the core gameplay experience. Purchases are optional cosmetics and a Luxury Battle Pass layered over a free pass track. Lattice is the premium currency, Units can be earned in limited quantities and exchanged 1:1 from Lattice, and Chrono Tokens are used for Battle Pass rewards. A purchased pass is described as non-expiring in the May 2025 update, while individual shop promotions and prices remain date- and region-dependent. For any purchase, trust the offer and price displayed in your current in-game store rather than a historical announcement.
