Marathon may be one of 2026’s most unsettling multiplayer games, but calling it the year’s scariest horror game is a matter of taste, not a proven ranking. Bungie describes Marathon as a sci-fi PvP extraction shooter, not a conventional horror campaign. Its strongest horror case is Dire Marsh (Night), a slower, darker zone Bungie says plays more like survival horror.

What kind of game is Marathon?

Marathon is a sci-fi PvP extraction shooter set on Tau Ceti IV. Players take the role of cybernetic mercenaries called Runners, entering persistent zones to pursue objectives and try to make it out. Bungie’s official FAQ uses that extraction-shooter description; the available official material does not classify the entire game as a horror title or describe it as a single-player survival-horror campaign.

Bungie announced a March 5, 2026 launch for Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, and later announced that the game was live. That makes Marathon a released game, rather than an upcoming 2026 release. Bungie’s launch-date announcement

Why Dire Marsh (Night) can feel like horror

The clearest basis for the horror label is one specific experience: Dire Marsh (Night). In its May 27, 2026 Season 2 announcement, Bungie said this version is slower-paced than Day Marsh and “plays more like a survival horror experience.” Darkness changes familiar spaces, obscures long sightlines, and makes threats harder to read. Players must decide when to use a flashlight, which can help them see but may also reveal their position. Bungie also points to extra environmental challenges and fewer players.

Cronos - PlayStation 5
  • Cronos: The New Dawn is a brutal third-person survival horror where you fight for the future by salvaging the past. Burn monsters before they merge. Extract souls from the living. Adapt or die.
  • Set in a grim world where Eastern European brutalism meets retro-futurist technology, Cronos: The New Dawn lets you experience a gripping story that straddles the line between past and future.
  • The enemies you’ll encounter are nightmarish creatures, born from the remnants of humanity – defeating them will require you to make full use of your arsenal.
  • The creatures you kill won’t stay dead for long. Fallen enemies can be absorbed by others - through a grotesque process called Merging - to become faster, tougher, and far deadlier.
  • This physical edition of Cronos: The New Dawn comes with bonus in-game content and a set of collectible stickers.

Those are design choices that can produce tension, not proof that every player will find the zone frightening. They also distinguish this experience from a scripted horror game: uncertainty comes in part from navigating a dangerous extraction zone and from the possibility of encountering other Runners. Bungie’s Season 2 announcement

What creates the tension

  • Reduced visibility: darkness and blocked sightlines make it harder to identify what is ahead.
  • Uncertainty: shadows and environmental threats can make a familiar route feel less predictable.
  • A consequential tool choice: using a flashlight improves visibility but can give away a Runner’s position.
  • Extraction pressure: players must weigh exploration and objectives against the risk of staying in the zone.

Is it the scariest horror game of 2026?

There is no objective answer in the available evidence. Bungie’s description establishes that Dire Marsh (Night) is designed to evoke survival horror; it does not establish that Marathon outranks every horror release of 2026, or that players generally consider it the scariest. “Scariest” depends on what unsettles you and which other games you include in the comparison.

  • CAPTAIN YOUR SHIP — Personalize your ship, modify its weapons and shields, and assign crew members for unique bonuses. Take part in space dogfights, dock at star stations, and board or commandeer enemy ships.
  • CRAFT AND FIGHT — Gather resources to craft supplies, equipment, and weapons, build outposts, and research crafting recipes. Modify weapons to suit your playstyle and use boost packs to maneuver in zero gravity.

A useful way to judge it for yourself is to ask what kind of fear you want. Marathon’s case rests on limited visibility, uncertainty, and the risk of other players in a competitive extraction setting. A more conventional horror game may instead rely on scripted encounters or sustained helplessness. These are different forms of tension, so the comparison is most useful when it focuses on how each game creates fear rather than treating “scariest” as a measurable title.

Where Marathon’s story and atmosphere come from

Marathon’s world is revealed over multiple runs rather than through a single conventional campaign. Bungie says players can learn about the game’s six factions through contracts, and uncover Tau Ceti IV’s history through narrative objects, lost audio and text logs, cryptic graffiti, and abandoned colony systems. Achievements and discoveries can unlock Codex entries that players can view outside runs. Bungie describes this approach as combining world design, gameplay, and discoverable narrative. Who is likely to enjoy its horror edge?

  • Try it if you like multiplayer tension, uncertain threats, and making tactical decisions when visibility is poor.
  • Temper expectations if you want a self-contained, scripted single-player horror campaign; that is not how Bungie describes Marathon’s main format.
  • Focus on Dire Marsh (Night) if the survival-horror comparison is what interests you. The label applies most directly to that zone, not automatically to every part of the game.
