There is no reliable evidence that macOS Mojave is universally faster than macOS Catalina. The available benchmark comparison uses different Geekbench versions and substantially different environments, while user reports disagree. Your Mac model, workload, applications, and system condition matter more than a blanket ranking.
What the available benchmark does—and does not—show
A Geekbench Browser comparison lists these results:
| System entry | Geekbench version | Single-core | Multi-core |
|---|---|---|---|
| Catalina 10.15.4 | 4.4.2 Tryout | 5,700 | 27,296 |
| Mojave 10.14.3 | 4.3.3 Tryout | 5,965 | 28,276 |
Those numbers are not a controlled test of the operating systems. Although both entries identify the Mac as MacBookPro15,2, the Catalina result is labeled “Proxmox” and lists a Core 2 Duo P9xxx-class processor and 16 GB DDR3 memory; the Mojave result is labeled “Bare Metal” and lists a Core i7-8700 and 32 GB DDR4 memory. The Geekbench versions also differ. The scores describe two distinct configurations, so they cannot establish that Mojave itself runs faster. See the Geekbench comparison.
Why speed can vary between Macs
Operating-system performance depends on the exact Mac and what you do with it. Booting, opening apps, browsing, moving files, and running demanding work exercise different parts of a system. Available memory, storage, background activity, thermal conditions, and the software installed can also affect how responsive a Mac feels.

- AN AMAZING MAC AT A SURPRISING PRICE — With an incredibly portable and durable aluminum design, up to 16 hours of battery life,* and the A18 Pro chip, MacBook Neo is ready to go wherever school takes you.
- FOUR STUNNING COLORS. ONE DURABLE DESIGN — Choose from four beautiful colors — Silver, Blush, Citrus, or Indigo — each with a color-coordinated keyboard. And MacBook Neo is made with a durable recycled aluminum enclosure that helps it reach 60 percent recycled content by weight — the most ever in any Apple product.*
- FLY THROUGH EVERYDAY ASSIGNMENTS — Whether you’re cramming for finals, using Apple Intelligence* to summarize class notes, creating presentations, or even playing the latest Apple Arcade game,* MacBook Neo delivers the performance and AI capabilities you need to get things done.
- UP TO 16 HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE — MacBook Neo delivers all day battery life, so you can power through from early morning classes to late night study sessions without worrying about plugging in.
- A VIBRANT 13-INCH DISPLAY* — The gorgeous Liquid Retina display on MacBook Neo supports 1 billion colors, so photos and videos pop and text is crisp for easy reading.
To compare Mojave and Catalina meaningfully, use the same Mac, the same app versions, and the same workload under comparable conditions. A result from a virtualized environment should not be treated as directly comparable to one from a different bare-metal setup. The surfaced comparison does not hold these factors constant.
Check compatibility and minimum requirements
Apple lists a 2 GB memory minimum for Mojave and 4 GB for Catalina. Its specifications list 12.5 GB of available storage for the stated upgrade paths for both systems. These are requirements, not performance measurements; meeting them does not predict how fast either OS will feel on a specific Mac. See Apple’s Mojave technical specifications and Catalina technical specifications.

What Apple’s release notes say about performance
Apple’s Mojave 10.14 release notes warn that using Carbon File Manager APIs and other APIs based on the FSRef structure might slow system performance on APFS-formatted volumes. This is a specific caveat for software using those APIs, not evidence that Mojave is generally slower or faster. Read Apple’s Mojave release notes.

Apple’s Catalina 10.15 release notes say that a Mac containing both Mojave 10.14 and Catalina 10.15 volumes might have issues searching in Mail. That is a coexistence issue, not an overall speed comparison. Read Apple’s Catalina release notes.

How to decide for your Mac
- Identify your exact model and memory. Confirm that the OS supports your Mac and compare its memory with Apple’s stated minimum.
- List your real workloads. Consider the tasks where you notice slowness, such as app launches, browser use, file transfers, or specialized software.
- Verify application and device compatibility. Check the versions you need before changing systems.
- Compare under consistent conditions if speed is the deciding factor. Use the same Mac, apps, and tasks for both systems; do not infer an OS advantage from scores produced by different configurations.
What users report
Reports in a MacRumors discussion and a Reddit discussion conflict: some people say Mojave feels faster, while others describe similar performance or an improvement with Catalina. These are individual experiences, not representative or controlled tests.
