Usually, yes—at least temporarily. Keep the original Xbox Series X or Series S carton, molded inserts and included documentation through the retailer’s return period and until you are sure the console works correctly. Keep it longer if you expect to move, sell or ship the console for service. Once those possibilities are unlikely and storage is more valuable, recycle the cardboard; the original box is useful, but it is not required for every repair shipment and Microsoft does not document a guaranteed resale-price premium for boxed consoles.
When keeping the box is the sensible choice
During the return window
Microsoft’s current Store policy says an eligible physical product must be returned in like-new condition, in its original packaging, with all parts, components, instruction manuals and documentation that were included at purchase. The policy describes a 60-day return window for almost any eligible physical product bought online, as stated by Microsoft in 2026. Eligibility, exclusions and regional terms can differ by order and market.
Refunds are generally processed within 3–5 business days after Microsoft receives and verifies the return, according to the same 2026 policy. Keeping the carton and inserts avoids a preventable packaging dispute if you discover a defect, receive the wrong item or change your mind during that period.

Even if you bought from another retailer, the first weeks are when you are most likely to need an exchange. Store the box until you have tested power, display output, controller pairing, networking, disc operation on Series X, downloads and any accessories included with your particular bundle. Do not discard manuals, cables, stands or small molded pieces separately; a return normally requires the complete original contents.

Does a repair or warranty claim require the original Xbox box?
No blanket rule in Microsoft’s Xbox Series X service guidance says that the retail carton is mandatory. The guidance identifies the console model and serial number on the rear label and directs owners who cannot complete the documented checks to an authorized service provider or an out-of-warranty repair order.
Shipping protection is still your responsibility. The original carton is convenient because its inserts hold the console securely, but a service center can accept a properly protected shipment in another container. Follow the instructions in the service order exactly, including what hardware to send and whether accessories should be excluded.

How to ship an Xbox safely without its retail packaging
If the original box is gone, use the same practical standard Microsoft gives for accessory shipments: choose a sturdy carton that fits the item and add packing material to limit excessive movement. Apply that principle to the console itself.
- Choose a strong, appropriately sized box. A heavy-duty double-wall carton is preferable to a thin produce or gift box. Leave enough room for cushioning, but not so much that the console can build momentum.
- Wrap the console on every side. Use closed-cell foam, thick bubble wrap or other non-abrasive cushioning. Protect corners and keep the console from touching the carton walls.
- Immobilize the contents. Fill empty space so the console cannot slide, rotate or strike the box during handling. Shake the sealed carton gently; movement means more filler is needed.
- Protect accessories separately. Bag the controller and cables so they cannot scrape the console. Send only the items requested in the repair or return instructions.
- Seal and document the shipment. Use strong packing tape, retain the tracking number and photograph the packed carton and serial-number label before handing it to the carrier.
Do not assume that a replacement carton with the exact retail dimensions is necessary. Microsoft’s published guidance emphasizes fit and limiting movement, not a particular Xbox box.

Will an original box increase resale value?
A clean carton can make a console easier to present, store and transport, and some buyers may prefer a complete package. However, Microsoft does not publish a Series X or Series S resale-price premium for boxed units. No verified figure establishes that retaining the packaging recovers a specific amount of money, so treat any resale benefit as a possible convenience rather than a guaranteed return.
For a future sale, the console’s condition, working status, included controller and cables, and an honest description are more defensible facts to document than an assumed “with box” premium. Keep the serial-number label legible and do not remove it.

Keep or recycle: a decision checklist

What to retain if you discard the carton
- Photograph the model and serial-number label on the rear of the console.
- Keep the manuals, purchase record, controller, power cable and any bundle-specific accessories together.
- Store the retained items in a dry location away from heat, moisture and crushing weight.
- Save the retailer order details and Microsoft account information needed to check service or return status.
When the box no longer serves a likely return, move, sale or repair, flatten and recycle the cardboard according to your local program. Retain the plastic or foam inserts only if you plan to keep the console boxed; otherwise, follow local rules for those materials.

Keep the Xbox Series X/S packaging through the retailer’s return period and your initial ownership check. Keep it longer when a move, resale or service shipment is plausible. If none of those events is likely and space matters, recycle it confidently: Microsoft’s documented requirement is complete, like-new original packaging for eligible Store returns, while repair shipping can use any sturdy, well-cushioned carton that prevents movement.
