Usually, yes—if you connect to your real bank through an encrypted connection and your device and account are protected. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says that public Wi-Fi is “usually safe” because encryption is widely used. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), however, recommends avoiding banking and other sensitive activity on public Wi-Fi. The practical safest choice is cellular data or your own personal hotspot; if you use public Wi-Fi, take steps to confirm the network and bank site are genuine.
What makes public Wi-Fi risky for banking?
Public Wi-Fi is shared infrastructure, often operated by a business or venue. You may not control who else is connected or how the network is configured. The main concern is not simply that strangers can automatically read every password: an encrypted connection to your bank helps protect information in transit. But encryption does not eliminate risks such as a lookalike hotspot, a phishing page, a compromised device, or a security warning you ignore.
The FTC’s consumer guidance, published in February 2023, puts the protection in context: “Because of the widespread use of encryption, connecting through a public Wi-Fi network is usually safe.” That is a qualitative assessment, not a measured probability that a banking session will or will not be compromised. CISA takes a more cautious approach and advises using a personal mobile connection for sensitive activity when possible.
Can someone see your bank password on public Wi-Fi?
If you reach the genuine bank through its encrypted app or website, encryption is designed to protect the connection between your device and the bank. It does not make every site trustworthy. A scammer can create a fraudulent banking page that also uses HTTPS, so the lock icon or https:// alone does not prove you are on your bank’s site.

Open the bank’s official app or type a web address you already know. Do not follow a banking link in an unsolicited email or text. If your browser displays a certificate or security warning, stop rather than bypassing it. The FTC explains both the role and limits of encryption in its public Wi-Fi guidance.
Is cellular data safer than public Wi-Fi for banking?
Generally, yes. With cellular data or a personal hotspot, you avoid relying on an unfamiliar public wireless network. CISA describes a personal mobile network connection as generally more secure than public wireless and recommends using one when available. A hotspot still depends on its service plan and cellular coverage, and it does not replace keeping your device and bank account secure.

On public Wi-Fi, confirm the network name and sign-in procedure with venue staff instead of guessing from a list of similar names. CISA’s public Wi-Fi best-practices tip card recommends caution and the use of a personal connection for sensitive activity.

A VPN may add encryption between your device and the VPN server, but it is not a guarantee of safety. It routes your traffic through the VPN provider, so you are placing trust in that provider’s security and data practices. A VPN cannot make a phishing page genuine, repair an infected device, or replace secure account credentials.

If you choose to use one, research the provider, review the app’s permissions, and check whether it shares data. Do not assume a bank or network permits or blocks VPN connections; check the relevant policy if that matters to you. How to bank more safely while traveling
- Prefer a personal connection. Use cellular data or your personal hotspot for banking when practical.
- Verify public Wi-Fi before joining. Ask venue staff for the exact network name and login procedure; do not select a similar-looking name by guesswork.
- Open the genuine bank service. Use the bank’s official app or a known web address, not a link from an unsolicited message. Check that the address uses HTTPS, and heed browser security warnings.
- Protect your device and account. Keep your operating system, browser, apps, and security software up to date. Use a strong, unique password and enable multifactor authentication where available.
- Make an informed VPN choice. Treat it as an optional privacy layer, not a substitute for the steps above; assess its permissions and data-sharing practices.
What the guidance does—and does not—establish
The FTC’s “usually safe” conclusion and CISA’s conservative recommendation address different practical concerns: encryption reduces the risk of data being exposed in transit, while avoiding public Wi-Fi reduces reliance on a network you do not control. Neither source provides a current quantified probability of account compromise from banking on public Wi-Fi. There is no supported risk percentage to apply to an individual session.
