Sometimes—but a lower overseas sticker price does not guarantee a lower final cost. To find out whether you will really save, compare the identical iPhone model and storage after checkout tax, currency-conversion costs, any refund you can actually claim, import charges, travel or shipping expenses, and the possible cost of foreign warranty service. For a traveler already making the trip, buying abroad can work. A trip taken solely for the phone usually erases a small price difference.
What the latest price comparison shows
Ulrich Rozier’s Pippin comparison collected official Apple Store prices in 41 countries on September 11, 2026, then converted currencies using the European Central Bank rate snapshot from October 12, 2026. For the iPhone 18 Pro 256 GB, its summary identifies the United States as the least expensive market in that snapshot at $1,295 including estimated US sales tax (about €1,158). Türkiye was the most expensive at ₺137,999 (about €2,502), a reported 116% spread. France was listed at €1,479 with tax included.
Those figures are a dated comparison, not a guaranteed checkout quote. The underlying US and Canadian Apple Store prices in the country table are shown before sales tax, while many other countries show tax-inclusive prices. The US number in the summary uses an estimated tax amount. Exchange rates, local taxes and Apple prices can change before you buy, so recheck the exact store page and your card’s conversion rate.
| Market or example | Reported figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| United States, iPhone 18 Pro 256 GB | $1,295 including estimated sales tax (about €1,158) | Summary estimate in the September 2026 comparison; US list prices are generally shown before tax and the final tax depends on the delivery or pickup location. |
| France, iPhone 18 Pro 256 GB | €1,479, tax included | Country-table price from the same snapshot. |
| Türkiye, iPhone 18 Pro 256 GB | ₺137,999 (about €2,502) | Highest price reported in that comparison. |
| Oregon, United States | 0% state sales tax | Example cited by TechRadar; local rules and any other taxes still need checking. |
| Louisiana, United States | 10% sales tax example | Example cited by TechRadar; the actual rate depends on the state and local jurisdiction. |
The comparison proves that large regional gaps can exist, but it does not establish an average saving for every traveler or every iPhone. It also does not make the cheapest listed market automatically cheapest for you after your home country’s import rules and service limitations.

Calculate the real delivered cost before deciding
Use the same order for both the home-market purchase and the foreign purchase. Record each amount in your home currency and keep evidence of the exchange rate and tax assumptions.
- Match the product exactly. Select the same iPhone generation, Pro or standard tier, storage capacity, color if relevant to availability, condition and included accessories. Confirm the model number and whether it is unlocked. A 256 GB phone cannot be compared with a 512 GB phone simply because the base prices look similar.
- Start with the local selling price. Use an Apple Store or authorized seller in each market. Note whether the displayed amount includes VAT, GST or sales tax. In the United States and Canada, sales tax is often added at checkout rather than included in the displayed price.
- Add checkout tax. For a US purchase, the final amount can vary by state, county and city. TechRadar’s examples range from Oregon’s 0% state sales tax to a 10% Louisiana example; its illustration says a $1,199 iPhone 18 Pro could reach $1,318 at the high end. That is a route-specific estimate, not a universal US price.
- Convert the currency using your payment method. A card network or bank may use a different rate from a public exchange-rate table and may add a foreign-transaction fee. Cash exchange spreads and dynamic-currency-conversion charges at a terminal can also change the result.
- Subtract only a refund you can obtain. A tourist VAT or GST refund is available only when your nationality or residence, the retailer, the departure route, the export deadline, the paperwork and the item’s condition satisfy that country’s rules. Deduct refund-processing fees and do not count a refund until you know the claim is eligible and documented.
- Add the cost of bringing the phone home. Check your destination’s personal allowance, declaration threshold, VAT or GST, customs duty and any broker or carrier fee. A device carried in your luggage follows different procedures from a parcel shipped to your address.
- Include incremental travel or shipping cost. If you are already taking the trip, the additional airfare may be close to zero, but transport to the store, insurance and time still have value. If the trip exists only to buy an iPhone, include the entire incremental fare, accommodation and handling cost.
- Price the service risk. A cheaper foreign unit can be expensive if a warranty claim requires dealing with the original sales country, international shipping or a long period without the phone.
A practical formula is: foreign total = foreign price + local tax + conversion fees − valid refund + import charges + shipping or trip cost + expected service cost. Compare that result with the same formula for a home purchase. If the difference is small, uncertainty alone is a reason to buy locally.

Taxes, customs and the return journey
Why the departure-market tax is not the whole story
In a country where tax is added at checkout, the displayed price can be misleadingly low. In a tax-inclusive market, the apparent price may already include a recoverable tourist tax—or a tax that cannot be reclaimed by your traveler category. Ask the retailer for an itemized invoice and confirm the refund process before paying.

TechRadar’s September 11, 2026 UK-focused example illustrates the moving parts. It reports that a US iPhone purchase may carry state and local sales tax, with Oregon at 0% and Louisiana at 10% as examples. It estimates a $1,199 iPhone 18 Pro could reach $1,318 at the high end. On arrival in the UK, the article says an iPhone bought for personal use has no customs duty, but a phone worth more than £390 must be declared. It also reports that a phone shipped from the US to the UK is subject to 20% VAT.

These are claims for that particular route and date, not a worldwide rule. Before travel, check the current customs authority guidance for your destination, your residence status and whether you are carrying or shipping the device. Declare when required; a low purchase price does not remove a declaration obligation.
Carried phone versus shipped phone
- Carried personally: personal-allowance limits and declaration procedures apply at the border. Keep the receipt and proof of tax paid accessible.
- Shipped: the carrier may collect import VAT, duty, brokerage and storage charges before delivery. A retailer’s “free shipping” offer does not necessarily include those destination charges.
SIM design and carrier compatibility can change the decision
The comparison identifies the US iPhone 18 Pro as eSIM-only. Several other regional versions are listed with both a nano-SIM tray and eSIM. If your current or future plan depends on a physical SIM, the US variant may require your carrier to convert the line to an eSIM or issue a compatible contract. A digital-only plan may work, but support varies by carrier and country.

- There will be no visible cosmetic imperfections when held at an arm’s length.

Before purchase, ask your home carrier to confirm eSIM activation for the exact model number, not merely the iPhone generation. Also verify that the model’s cellular bands and regional features are supported on your network; the available evidence does not independently validate every country-and-carrier combination. If the carrier cannot confirm compatibility in writing, a home-market model with the required SIM arrangement is the lower-risk choice.
Warranty, repairs and consumer rights
Apple’s limited-warranty wording, reproduced by TechRadar, states: “Apple may restrict warranty service for hardware products to the country where Apple or its Authorized Distributors originally sold the device.” The word may matters: it describes a possible restriction, not an automatic refusal of every claim. Contact Apple or an authorized service provider with the exact model and sales region before relying on local repair.

Service logistics can include international shipping, customs paperwork, language issues, a local provider declining the regional part, or a replacement being unavailable in your country. Keep the original invoice and serial-number record; they may be requested to establish purchase date and sales region.
Apple’s iPhone 16 Important Product Information Guide says warranty benefits are in addition to rights under local consumer laws and that consumers might have remedies against the seller for lack of conformity. That guide concerns iPhone 16, so it is not a complete legal answer for a newer model. Read the warranty supplied with the current phone and identify which country’s consumer law applies to your sale.
When buying abroad makes sense
- You are already traveling and the foreign price remains lower after local tax, currency fees, a realistic refund and any import charge.
- The exact storage, model number, SIM setup and carrier support match what you need.
- You can comply with the destination’s declaration rules and retain all invoices and refund documents.
- You accept that warranty service may be tied to the original sales country and have confirmed how repairs would work.
When buying at home is the better value
- The foreign saving is small or depends on an uncertain tax refund.
- You would take a dedicated flight, pay international shipping or incur brokerage charges solely for the phone.
- Your carrier requires a physical SIM that the foreign variant lacks, or cannot confirm eSIM support.
- You want straightforward returns, local consumer remedies and nearby warranty service.
- Exchange rates are volatile enough that the saving could disappear before the purchase or statement date.
A pre-purchase checklist
- Write down the exact model, storage and model number for both markets.
- Capture the foreign and home prices, noting tax-inclusive versus pre-tax display.
- Calculate checkout tax and your card’s actual exchange rate and fees.
- Obtain written confirmation of any tourist refund, including processing fees and export timing.
- Check your destination’s allowance, declaration threshold, VAT/GST, duty and carrier charges.
- Ask your carrier about eSIM, physical SIM and network compatibility for that model number.
- Ask Apple or an authorized provider how warranty service works for the foreign sales region.
- Save the invoice, serial number, tax documents and proof of payment.
- Recalculate immediately before purchase because Apple prices, exchange rates and border rules can change.
Bottom line for the 2026 iPhone 18 Pro example
The September 2026 comparison shows that an iPhone can be dramatically cheaper in one country than another on paper—the reported US-to-Türkiye difference for the 256 GB iPhone 18 Pro is 116%. That gap is meaningful only after you add the tax at the checkout location, convert at your real payment rate, claim only an eligible refund, follow your home country’s customs rules, confirm the SIM configuration and account for warranty service. If you are already traveling and the fully loaded foreign total is clearly lower, buying abroad can save money. Otherwise, the home-market phone’s predictable taxes, compatibility, returns and service often make it the cheaper decision in practice.
