Verdict: IDrive is worth considering if you want one account to back up several computers and other supported devices, with file-version history and recovery options. It is primarily a backup service, not a drop-in replacement for a synced cloud drive. Whether it is good value depends on your total storage needs, the plan’s device limits and the price at renewal—not just the promotional amount shown at signup.
This assessment is based on IDrive’s published features and pricing, not independent speed, reliability or security testing. Plan details and promotions can change; check the current terms before subscribing.
What does IDrive back up?
IDrive describes support for Windows and Mac computers, Linux machines, iPhones, iPads, Android devices, external drives and supported NAS devices. Exact availability and limits depend on the plan and device type, so confirm that the specific systems you need are included on the IDrive features page and the selected plan’s terms.
Its plan lineup is aimed at different users: Personal is positioned for individuals and home users, Team for small teams, and Business for medium-to-large organizations. The pricing page compares plan capacities and device or user limits; it is the place to check whether a plan covers every computer and account you intend to protect.

How much does IDrive cost?
IDrive’s signup page displayed Personal options of 2 TB and 5 TB at promotional monthly-equivalent prices of $3.75 and $4.99, respectively, alongside crossed-out amounts of $7.49 and $9.99. These were limited offers for the first year on the signup display accessed October 7, 2026—not guaranteed current prices or renewal quotes. The page says accounts renew automatically. The signup flow is region-sensitive, so check the final checkout amount, billing interval and renewal terms for your location at IDrive signup and pricing.
IDrive’s pricing page states that prices are in US dollars and that discounts are limited-time offers for eligible signups. It lists overage rates of $0.25 per GB per month for Personal and $0.50 per GB per month for Team and Business. Verify whether those terms apply to your selected plan and how overage is handled before purchase.
- Compare the plan’s total storage with the combined data you need to back up, rather than judging capacity by one computer alone.
- Check included computers, users and supported device types, along with any limits that affect your setup.
- Confirm the recurring price after the introductory period, billing frequency, taxes and potential overage charges at checkout.
- Account for add-ons: IDrive lists backup for Microsoft 365, Google Workspace and other cloud applications separately, with availability and seat pricing varying by product.
Those details matter more than a headline introductory rate. IDrive’s published pricing alone does not establish that it is the cheapest option for a particular household or office.

Is IDrive backup the same as cloud storage sync?
No. IDrive’s core purpose is backup: it keeps copies of files so they can be recovered later. Its separate Cloud Drive feature syncs selected files across devices in real time and must be activated separately, according to IDrive’s product and pricing information.
The distinction affects what happens when something goes wrong. IDrive says sync is not backup because a deletion or an encrypted file can propagate across synced devices. Sync is useful for keeping working files aligned; it should not be the only recovery copy for important data. A separate backup layer can reduce dependence on sync, but it does not remove every account, device or ransomware risk. IDrive explains this distinction in its cloud-backup explainer.
What recovery and version-history options does IDrive offer?
IDrive advertises incremental, compressed transfers and continuous data protection. Its feature page says users can keep up to 30 previous versions of backed-up files, view historical point-in-time snapshots, and recover deleted items from Trash within 30 days. These are vendor-described features; check current plan terms for their applicability.

- Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac

IDrive also describes True Archiving: backed-up files remain in the account until you manually delete them or run Archive Cleanup. That can help when you need a stored copy to outlast changes on a computer, but it is not a substitute for checking account capacity and archive-management terms.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUsing IDrive Express for bulk transfer
For a large initial backup or restore, IDrive offers IDrive Express, which uses a shipped physical drive to transfer data. Included requests and charges for additional requests vary by plan. The pricing page says shipment is intended to complete within a week; that is not a guaranteed arrival or restore time. Check your plan’s allowance and current service terms before relying on Express for a deadline.
How does IDrive handle encryption and private keys?
IDrive says files are encrypted with 256-bit AES in transit and at rest. It also offers an optional private encryption key that, according to the company, is not stored on its servers. IDrive says it cannot read data protected with that key, while only the customer can recover the key. These are vendor statements, not an independent audit of the implementation.

The choice has a practical trade-off: a private key gives you more control over access to the backed-up data, but you must preserve the key securely. If you lose it, you may be unable to recover your files. Decide how you will store and retrieve the key before enabling it.

IDrive may fit if you need
- Backup for multiple computers or a mix of supported computers, mobile devices, external drives and NAS devices.
- File-version history, snapshots and a defined recovery window for deleted items.
- A bulk-transfer option for an initial backup or restore that is too large or slow to move conveniently online.
- A backup service with an optional private encryption key, and you can manage that key safely.
Consider another setup if you need
- A simple synced drive as your primary product; IDrive’s Cloud Drive is a separate feature, not the same thing as its backup service.
- A known renewal cost before checkout, without a promotional first-year price requiring careful confirmation.
- A specific tested upload speed, uptime record or independently verified security assessment; the published material cited here does not establish those.
For important files, an external drive can also serve as an optional local backup layer alongside cloud backup. IDrive says external drives can be added to a backup set. Keeping a separate local copy can provide another recovery path, though it should be protected from loss, damage and unauthorized access.

What to check before subscribing
- Map your devices and data. List computers, mobile devices, external drives and any NAS you want covered, then confirm support and plan limits on the current pricing page.
- Choose backup or sync for each job. Use backup for recoverable copies and version history; activate Cloud Drive separately only if you also want synced files.
- Review the real cost. At checkout, confirm storage, included devices or users, billing interval, promotional duration, renewal price, taxes and overage terms.
- Check recovery fit. Make sure the advertised file-version, Trash, Snapshot and Express options meet your needs and apply to your plan.
- Plan key storage and a second copy. If you choose a private encryption key, store it somewhere secure and recoverable. Consider a separate local backup for especially important files.
